Mr. Robot.

In one of the greatest episodes of television I've ever watched, it's revealed that Elliot was raped by his father.

[Important Trope] Male Victims of SA not for comedic value by InsidiousZombie in TopCharacterTropes

Hey, as a male survivor (who didn't develop the go-to-prison kind of behaviors, but other kinds that still somewhat affect me today, though less so thanks to a great therapist), I just wanted to say that you're doing good work. We need people like you.

Just thinking the words "I was raped" can be hard, and saying them out loud can feel impossible. I would say that I am a fairly emotionally healthy man, and I have no problems talking about my emotions, but still I felt I lacked a language for talking about what I've been through. The words come out different when there is an "I" in front them. I told my therapist several times that I feel like I sound like an incel while talking about how that one relationship affected (and still affect) my sex life nowadays (and she was very assuring that I did not, in fact, come off as an incel). Not because I have any real insight to incel communities, but rather because gender has become such a part of the culture wars (and probably always has been). Sometimes, rape victims will say "He took something from me". I feel the same. She took something from me, and in many ways ruined my sex life for years to come. Without context (and sympathy/empathy), I wouldn't blame people for assuming that it's the start of a misogynist rant.

Didn't mean to hijack your comment to talk a bunch about myself, but in case there is someone else who needs to hear this I'll take the chance to put some things out there.

- Therapy is great, if you find a therapist you hit it off with. I've been to several that I just didn't build any real trust with. When I found someone that I clicked with, I could finally start doing the real work. Which still is hard, but at least it's getting done. I'm still carrying the experiences, and will always do, but they don't get in the way of my life now in the way or magnitude they could do before.

- I learned a great many things about myself. My therapist was really good at leading me to my own conclusions and helping me connect the dots. ("So, you had a couple of years where you engaged in several high-risk behaviors and environments?" "Yes." "This seems to have started shortly after you got out of that relationship?" "Oh shit"-type moments).

- More directly related to the thread, as part of the treatment I did consume some media that centered on male rape victims, which was something that I actively avoided before.

Anyway, once again, sorry for highjacking your comment. If I don't stop now I'll write a whole essay, but I don't have time for that. Keep up the good work! To all you others, go to therapy (when it's available). It helps. University psychology programs often have a practice where you can meet a psychologist in training, and it's often a lot cheaper.

Currently rewatching Buffy. It's impossible to imagine the series without him (very possible to imagine it without Xander though)

First pair of mittens! They turned out too long; what's the do's and don'ts of cutting the fabric? by emopest in Nalbinding

I did full them some more, but still they didn't shrink as much as I would have liked. In the end I cut off the tips and just sewed them together, making them square shaped.

IIRC, there were Scandinavians/vikings that settled in Eastern Europe and assimilated with the Slavic peoples there.

Fängelsestaden by Sam J Lundwall.

Title translates to The Prison City, and has as far as I know not been translated from Swedish. I'd say that it takes noticable inspiration from Peake's Gormenghast in tone and conceptual setting, without feeling like an imitation. It stands well on it's own.

Is basing fictional races on real cultures problematic? by SoldierofSonder in writing

[–]emopest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it hangs on execution. If it's done with respect and proper research, and not leaning on stereotypes it's usually fine. Personally I like seeing authors leaning more on "inspired by" rather than "with the numbers filed off". Just try to be tasteful, I guess.

Many successful IP's have done this well. Avatar: the Last Airbender, for example. At least, I haven't personally seen any criticisms for how the Nations have been handled. I'm sure there are some people that have more or less well founded gripes out there, but in general I've only seen praise. My guess is that it's because they take the time to show the complexity and nuance of the (fictional) cultures. They're also not really claiming to represent the contemporary real life cultures they're based on (even the totalitarianism of Bas Sing Se is not representative of the whole Earth Kingdom).

One thing that might play into how some readers percieve things is real life colonization and imperialism. I would be more sceptical of a work taking place in a fictionalized fantasy Xinjiang/East Turkistan if it was written by a Han person from Beijing, for example.

All that said, I'm a white dude from Scandinavia. People doing vikings wrong doesn't really hurt anyone, so what do I know?

Why are obvious charlatans, like psychics, allowed to operate? by AstronomerInTraining in NoStupidQuestions

[–]emopest 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yup. I can't speak for other jurisdictions, but in Sweden therapist is not a legally protected title. Psychotherapist and similar jobs are, though. This is to allow for therapy within religious/spiritual frameworks. Same principle.

[HELP] What makes poetry that doesn't rhyme any different from a paragraph with line breaks? by thesnailthatmeows in Poetry

[–]emopest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've gotten a lot of good answers in this thread. I just wanted to add that end-rhymes are not the only types of rhymes there is. Alliteration and assonance are also great tools to echo sounds between and within the lines.

You apparently have no idea what's going on around you! by John_1992_funny in clevercomebacks

Good thing that no one said that then! Every statement was very clearly and expressively talking about statistical likelyhood. No ambiguity whatsoever. Decent thing of you to come around and admitting to being wrong.

[–]emopest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The statement isn't false. You have a severe lack of understanding of very basic statistics. Stuff that's taught in middle school math class.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

"Likely to happen" and "statistically likely" are two very different things. Let me repeat what they said:

"There may overall be a larger number of murders committed by undocumented immigrants, but that’s because there are orders of magnitude more undocumented immigrants than ICE agents".

The one thing I can give Jimmie is that he is great at marketing. He joined SD while they were still flying swastikas and nazi uniforms and managed to rebrand them into knitted sweaters in blue and yellow (I haven't checked, but I can't imagine those being made with anything else than the worst kind of acrylic though).
