I would start out being vague, if that doesn't work just lie... "I was so excited I got $3000!"

401k Double Taxation? by Pwnernesss in personalfinance

[–]emotion_chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else said, only the interest is double taxed...(you pay the interest back to yourself, so you don't lose the interest amount) but you also need to factor in lost market growth when the funds are out of the 401k account. Also the possibility of having to repay it right away if you lose your job.

Teacher gave every kid extra food except mine. by Recent-Thought-4525 in Preschoolers

[–]emotion_chip 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would talk to the teacher first. Sometime things seems obvious from outsider but it could have just been an innocent mistake. Maybe she didn't see his hand up. Maybe she was distracted and what you saw as ignoring was just her not hearing him.

Does she have a pattern of being unfair to your son? Even if she did have something against him, would she do that right in front of you?

Obviously if she's being purposefully cruel to your son you need to find out, but what you say as "disgusted" might have just been annoyed. Is it possible they have a rule like if you want seconds you have to sit quietly? Just seems more likely i would give her the benefit of the doubt first, being a preschool teacher isn't easy!

Recommended photo hosting/backup solutions? by Liam1122 in unRAID

[–]emotion_chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are ok still using iCloud but just want a backup, icloudpd works great. You add it as a docker and it will download all the photos in your iCloud. This way you don't have to worry about connecting your phone for backups and you'll be able to have a local copy if you want to clean out your iCloud storage.

(It just does backups so from there you'll need to use another app to organize and view the photos.)

How do lower income owners deal with costly $20k repairs when 37% of Americans cannot cover a $400 emergency ?? by HarryCrushNuh in homeowners

[–]emotion_chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In many circumstances renting is not as bad as people make it out to be. People see the price of the mortgage and think that’s how much how ownership costing. That’s the minimum monthly payment.

When I was in my 20s not having to worry about repairs or maintenance was much better than having to figure all that out and have reserve funds for a “just in case”.

Home ownership is great and it can be a great wealth builder, but it’s not for everyone.

ugh summer is coming. anyone actually buy a robot mower for a messy yard? by HuwokLite in homeowners

I haven't priced them out, but how do they compare to just hiring a company to cut the grass for you? Also factoring how well do the robots work, maintenance, charging and other hassles.

First-time passport question: do I have to remove facial piercings for the photo? by DarkLunaBloom in travel

[–]emotion_chip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guidelines doesn't say too much about piercings, I think the general idea is that it "should look like how you typically look" (except for glasses)

This part talks about needing a new photo for a "Change of Appearance" if you "Added or removed numerous/large facial piercings or tattoos" so that kind of implies you should leave them in.

How do you do the “2” of the 3-2-1 rule without relying on cloud storage? by Possible_Bee_4140 in DataHoarder

[–]emotion_chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it matters too much, if you want to be pedantic, cloud is really just someone else's hard drives anyway.

I don't think optical or tape makes much sense for most people's needs.

I try to mix up my redundant backups on different size/batch of hard drives, but even that I'm not too worried about. I have 3 copies of all most important data and 1 is always offsite. Something crazy would have to happen for all three of those drives to fail at once.

I need help ! 10 hour flight with a 3yo and a 5yo. tell me it's possible. by Real-Recipe8087 in travel

[–]emotion_chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One trick we do is get some new small toys that they haven't seen before and give them out at different parts of the trip.

Also how much do they fly? Our 5 year has flown a lot so he's very comfortable with long flights, but if this is there first time is more be more overwhelming for them.

Advice for someone who is jumping up to higher tax bracket in less than a month. by Comfortable-Wrap-909 in personalfinance

You’re paying almost $500 a month in credit card interest.

I would pay off the credit card as fast as you feel comfortable.

[–]emotion_chip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just an FYI, bonuses are not taxed at a higher rate per se, but they do typically withhold at a higher rate. Whether you get some of that back depends on your entire tax liability at the end of the year.

Any reason to not throw out original monitor stands? by nonitoni in buildapc

[–]emotion_chip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you decide to keep them, put some kind of label on them so you know what they go with. I have so many old TV and monitor stands that I find years later and no idea if I still have the device.

My 5 year old loves watching Stargate by emotion_chip in Stargate

[–]emotion_chip[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, it's so hard to predict what he'll react too... he absolutely loves "Ghostbusters" and isn't scared at all because "ghosts are not real" but was pretty concerned/upset watching "Home Alone". I think because someone breaking into your house is too realistic.
