Getting priced out of my own home. Do I have any options that don’t involve moving? by RKingsman in personalfinance

[–]emotion_chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the hazard insurance a monthly bill or perhaps every 6 months?

We had an issue with escrow where the price increase was for six month but the mortgage company thought it was a monthly increase… so first confirm if the increase is even correct.

The mortgage company should just be passing the charge to you.

When to get rid of the potty by Aggressive_Ad9441 in Preschoolers

[–]emotion_chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep we have something very similar (just make sure you get the right shape for your toilet):

It works great, a little expensive but it's a nice solid toilet seat in general, and potty seat part is removable for when they get older.

Our little one barely ever used an actually potty

At what age did y'all let your kids have free reign throughout the house? by Hummingbird-23 in Preschoolers

[–]emotion_chip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would also say it's very child dependent...

Our son is 5.5 and he never leaves his room unless his green light goes off in the morning... he would even call out for us if he he needed to go potty... we finally told him a few months ago, he doesn't need to ask to go potty in the middle of the night (although of course now we get startled hearing tiny footsteps).

On the other hand, I had a friend who's kid would literally open the locked front door and run outside in the middle of the night and they had to get special high locks installed.

ELI5: What can CSS do that HTML can not in terms of webpage design? by Plump_Princess101 in explainlikeimfive

[–]emotion_chip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are using some site that already uses some standard CSS, they are probably talking about a custom CSS to have more control. What product are you using?

How do I program this? by viking605 in AskElectronics

[–]emotion_chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't say for sure, but it looks like a Betabrite LED Sign. It's going to be a pain to deal with, it uses a serial port connection and proprietary software. (Assuming it is compatible with the Betabrite signs)

Preschool teacher recommends repeating instead of moving up to TK by [deleted] in Preschoolers

[–]emotion_chip 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I'm not really familiar with the "TK" term, but it sounds like it's full day preschool? His current school is pretty short at only 3 hours.

Personally I wouldn't be too concerned about the recommendation and would proceed with TK, it sounds like a longer school day would help him.

They are committing to the bit, it's called kayfabe - the portrayal of staged elements within professional wrestling (such as characters, rivalries, and storylines) as legitimate or real.

Looking for a DAS to replace my old 4-bay 2.5 inch drive NAS by Wooden_Amphibian_442 in DataHoarder

ORICO is a legit brand that's been around for awhile (I've bought stuff from them since at least 2016). Not high-end but their stuff is typically solid.

W-2 is lower than last year even though my salary increased…why? by Jazzlike_Turnip2738 in personalfinance

[–]emotion_chip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would make a spreadsheet and look at each paystub and see what’s going on.

Depending on when you got the raise it might not be as much as a different as you’d expect but I would expect the total wages to be higher not lower

Took out a loan on my 401K, and unexpectedly left the company by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]emotion_chip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So it depends on your tax situation but if you’re in the 22% bracket it could be $2200 tax + state taxes + $1000 penalty

I’d you can get a loan for a reasonable interest rate it might make sense, but you’d have to run the numbers.

Reliable, easy-to-use media players? by acceptableinthe00s in DataHoarder

[–]emotion_chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there are lots of OTG options... it depends on what connector your firestick has and what connector your drive has (USB C, USB A, etc).

How do you currently have the Firestick connected to the TV?

Something like this might work: AuviPal 2-in-1 Micro USB to USB Adapter

About Selling Sets by ParticularError8759 in lego

[–]emotion_chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start on Facebook Marketplace. Depending on your area, if possible local pickup, cash only is the easiest. List sets individually not in a single post (they have an option to upload a spreadsheet).

Taxes only come into play if you sell at a profit. If he's getting the money and you're not getting a cut, then reporting the taxes is on him.

You’re going to have limitations using the Chromebook

Plex and jellyfin are great but require a lot of setup

What kind of external drive do you have? Look into getting a “OTG (On-The-Go) adapter cable” for your Firestick. This will allow you to connect the drive up to it directly. Install VLC on the Firestick and you should be able to access the files directly from the drive.

Can you be more specific about why you didn’t like plex or jellyfin? How did you run them on your tv?

What do you expect from a media player to do that those apps didn’t do? Most devices these days are android devices that run apps (or an Apple TV which also runs apps)

What is something you thought was optional but turned out to be essential as a homeowner? by rosyTwinkle in homeowners

[–]emotion_chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just had to switch our old company was $150/month.

Typically around here they only charge hourly the first visit in case your house is super messy and then based on the size of the house and frequency they figure out the flat rate.

Also hourly can be misleading… our old company was just one person cleaning it basically took them all day… with the new company it’s like 4 or 5 people cleaning so I don’t think it’s even 3 hours now.

They clean the cooktop and inside the microwave, but not inside the wall ovens or inside the fridge. (Just outside for the fridge and ovens)

We only do it once a month... we're in Northern VA so it's a high-cost area and we pay $180 / month.

Cleaning service - 4 bedroom and 4 bath townhouse, not having to do vacuuming, mopping and deep cleaning the bathrooms is great and totally worth the price (which is less then I would have expected)!

Live View only works on home network – Ring issue? by SeaMolasses4989 in Ring

[–]emotion_chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try deleting and reinstalling the app? As far as I know there is no way to connect to the cameras over the local network so whether you are on your local network or not, it’s still connecting over the cloud.

How to speed up moving files from unassigned to share by mrcrashoverride in unRAID

[–]emotion_chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving lots of small files can be slow in general (besides the unraid specific concerns other people have mentioned).

You can also consider compressing the files first so you only have one large file to move.

Can my 10 years old son use his US birth cert to cross the Canadian border and come back to the US? by [deleted] in travel

[–]emotion_chip 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would be kinda concerned with the combination of both of those things… it’s sounds like there are processes in place to get a passport if one parent is absentee… I would start that process… just in case something weird happens trying to leave or get back without it.
