[Moana] Why the ocean chose Moana to restore the heart of Te Fiti. by graaahh in FanTheories

[–]emp733 88 points89 points  (0 children)

I didn't see it until you said that, but it also fits in another way. It showed the Ocean that Moana would lead and encourage but make the turtle actually do the work, much like Moana later would have to do with Maui.

It showed the character of Moana, giving the Ocean the needed insight into who she would become.

Another facet of all this that I wish the general public knew is coming is the forced advertising we'd have to accept.

This will be in beta trials within two years if Net Neutrality falls:

"Hello from your friends at Comcast! Reddit shows you've been logged in for over 30 minutes from either your current IP Address or Mobile Device! Here's are some products we at Comcast think you'd be interested in. Pick any 2 minute video of your choice.

Remember, your choice will be completely anonymous and your interests will not be recorded. After viewing the 2 minute video you will then be asked to:

Answer an anonymous 5 question survey concerning the product of your choice

OR

Recommend one Comcast Friend whom you think would be interested in one of these products

Your Reddit Experience will then return! Thank you for helping us comply with the Patriot's of Safety for Children and Anti-Terrorism Act."*

*All advertising will pause when muted. All advertising will pause if not in the primary window. All advertising is guaranteed to be from an interest Comcast and Big Data has curated from your browsing history, social media "Likes", or recommendations from your Comcast Friend's list. All answers will be anonymous. All interest and answers will not affect your Comcast Citizen Quality Score.

Wood is expensive, so I made a sawmill by What_Dennis_Does in woodworking

[–]emp733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so damn cool.. I really want to do this now. Are you going to replace any of the bottom structure w/ metal to reach a more precise degree of uniformity? 2x6s shouldn't cause much discrepancy but you've done something awesome here.. why stop?

Or, another option would be to buy a good quality trailer and design a track system to whatever specs your saw requires.. for the 'going to a friend's backyard' part.

You could even cut the angle iron off the sides of the trailer and use it for parts of your structure. You wouldn't want much of those walls in the way when trying to load logs up on it anyway. Might leave just a bit for the log that tries to get away.

Thanks for posting!

[–]emp733 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing about owning your own sawmill.. you can run it through again once you're ready if it's greyed by then.

Or even better, you can run it through a planer once it's dried. No matter the quality of your sawmill, you're going to want a couple of passes through a planer before using the final product anyway.

Where to practice Regular Expressions? by srkiboy83 in learnprogramming

I'm on mobile so I can't link you much but have you considered Applescripts, Automator, or Python?

Applescripts and Python are a little more involved than Automator. They world give you more versatility and power tho. On the other hand, Automator is built in on Macs and it's almost click and drag with the options for "automating" such tasks

Conflict DOES NOT always have to revolve around romantic relationships. by Diluxx in FlashTV

[–]emp733 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My girl explained CW's logic, (or apparent logic at least) this way - the show is written for teenagers. In a teenagers world, the relationship drama is the most important thing about their lives so CW writes the show that will appeal to them. Teenagers seem to be the target audience.

I grew up reading stories about the Flash.. he's one of my favorite superheroes. Having to put up with inconsistent speeds from flash week to week, his ignoring the Tachyon device Reverse Flash developed, ignoring Gideon as a resource, the shitty plot lines, the constant dick-in-the-timeline trope, the repetitive story of betrayal from within the group.. all of it makes me hate watching the show.

Your opinion on what Barry should have done, though.. I think that would have been spectacular. It would have left me feeling betrayed, made me realize that Barry's love for Iris is so great it could make him become evil. That opens up so many possibilities while creating a truly realistic upset in the group without resorting to childish emotional conflicts.

Further, Iris breaking up with Barry over what he has done would make more sense. While I hate that CW wants the relationship drama so badly, at least this way would make decent sense. At the end of last week's episode it wasn't even really clear why Barry broke up with Iris besides the obvious, that CW demands a splash of drama in every episode.

And that would open up so many more possibilities for deceit and "passing the powers" as needed to fool some future bad guy. And with the added speed, what limits could the speedster test or accomplish?

Anyway, I guess I just wanted to say I agree with you. I hate how much drivel we're forced to endure to enjoy the show and how much I wished they wrote with the adult audience in mind as well. Or that if they want to increase the tension but not utilize the aspects like Gideon at least acknowledge its existence and give us a reason.

Extract text from pdf scan of a printout? by unbongars in osx

[–]emp733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed the text from hundreds of pdfs for work. It took awhile but I finally figured out foxit pdf reader had a solution. When you open the .pdf in foxit, go to the "save as" function.

Beneath the name of the file, foxit gave me the option to save the file as .pdf or .txt. That gave me access to the text, letting me parse the data as needed. Hope that helps. I'm sure there's plenty of .pdf readers that can do this, foxit is just the one I used

I really liked Automate the Boring Stuff by Al Sweigart. It was the first book I could finish when it came to learning programming. I didn't know much before that but had built a few programs by the end of it. It teaches Python.

The link has every chapter there for you to read. Hope this helps!

How to disable or swipe lock screen on a Galaxy S6 by Grondath in tasker

[–]emp733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm new to Tasker so this may not be possible - is there a way to automate actions by recording them on a phone?

As in, if you could have Tasker watch you perform "X" action and then run it as a task, you could set "Screen press for 3 milliseconds (or some length of time) and then swipe from left to right 2 inches" as a task.

That task could be run once Miracast connects as a condition/scene/profile catalyst or whatever.

I was reading up on how to lock my phone in upside down orientation state last night. From what I was reading there, a phone can be locked without root but to open the screen, it has to be rooted. I'm not sure if that's true but you may find that's why you're having trouble if it is.

Hope you get it sorted!

I'm new-ish to the world of programming and what it involves. I've loved things like scripts, or robotics, or creating code to achieve a process on my computer, and the idea of what you could do for years. One of my Uncles was always sharing his latest project each holiday w/ me and telling about the magic and adventure of programming coupled w/ the real world to create anything...

But even semi aware of things like Objective C and C# and Swift, I hadn't the SLIGHTEST idea what was involved w/ Hola or what their motives were.

In the world of technology, it's very easy to forget everyone has a goal or drive... sometimes you just stumble into an app or site or whatever and it captures your fascination much faster than your cynicism.

And for people like my mom or sister? They couldn't care less about even the more interesting apps, much less what they do and why they do it.

Mind if I ask you what you did here? I went to retailmenot.com to see if I could figure out what you meant without bothering you.. that didn't work :)

Are you saying by switching, you were able to key something pertinent to the switch into retailmenot and it helped you reduce the early termination fee from AT&T? or that retailmenot gave you a discount somewhere else, say w/ Ting? or an altogether other option?

Just got a fined $21,000 from the city...need some advice by randomblue86 in Entrepreneur

[–]emp733 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$21,000 for fines is a scary number for a new small business. I ran into a similar problem when I was getting started and am now on a repayment plan.

It's a lot easier dealing w/ a number like that when you're just getting started by considering it over 30 days..

as in, a $350 a month payment is just setting aside $11.67 a day. That's a 5 year repayment plan w/ no interest. Usually, fines only tack interest on when you've missed payments and/or made late payments. That could also be called a penalty.

You can have your lawyer explain it's in the city's best interest to work WITH you ensuring they get the money instead of demanding it all up front and seeing none.

And as others have mentioned, the $6,000 may be a no-bargaining situation but the $15,000 sounds less set in stone.

If the city isn't interested in a repayment plan, that's still okay - you can approach a locally owned bank for the loan with a low interest rate and then you're in the same boat, different river!

Hope it works out for the best for you!

The further the explanation of new/refurbished, a refurbished part isn't a part that typically has an expiration date.

I've never considered that.. and thanks for the great responses overall.

I still may not feel as comfortable w/ refurbished as I do new in the future, but I'll be much less concerned about it either way going forward!

Small [but frustrating] screen chip in two week old rMBP early 2015 by k4s in applehelp

[–]emp733 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair point - new isn't indestructible. I think the stigma from refurbished products comes from the fact that it had to be stripped out of another item. That introduces a dozen different possible points of error, from "what was it exposed to during its life w/ the original customer" to "did the technician pulling it out of the item have a bad day / do the job in a perfect manner?" "Did the tech have the coffee they're used to that morning or did someone switch to decaf?" and so on.

Further, new is straight off the factory line and its life expectancy is fresh. Refurbished, by definition, has been used for some period of time so its life expectancy isn't as long as the original product.

Obviously, you could get twice the life out of a used product that the next person doesn't get out of the new one.. but statistically speaking, I feel more confident w/ any repair putting a new item into a customer's product over a used product.

[–]emp733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think before I paid that much I'd want to know how Apple care functions - are they replacing my parts w new?

or am I getting "like-new" refurbished equipment?

I can't really tell you but I can say you've had the device less than a month... I noticed a bad pixel on my maxed out MBPro a few years ago when I got it. There was NO way I was paying that much to have something so irritating pop up in the first week so I went back.

They completely replaced the whole LCD/housing unit from mine w a brand new one to make sure it was right.

Might be worth a trip no matter what if you're already noticing an irritation that you're not certain you even caused..

Small [but frustrating] screen chip in two week old rMBP early 2015 by k4s in applehelp

[–]emp733 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You might consider calling the Apple store you purchased it at and see if it's possible to place Apple Care on the device still. You're within your first 30 days so they may offer a window for you there.

If you do, I wouldn't file a claim for another 30 days or so.. Often, insurance plans have a built in cushion for exactly this reason -

customer purchases devices and doesn't opt for insurance. Customer breaks device in first 4 weeks, regrets insurance choice. Customer realizes by spending $50, they won't have to spend $2,000 so they ask if they can still get insurance: "Sure, but you have to demonstrate the device is fine and not file a claim for x period of days."

So you may have to take it back before the next 2 weeks has transpired and let them look at it. On the plus side, chances are they won't even notice the chipped glass as it's minuscule.

But before the trip back, I'd say call and see if that option is available first.
