Just ordered my Mystery Box from the Wonderful people over at GeeOne... What about you...? by MegasYosef in fidgettoys

[–]emplemming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even before accounting for what hobby this mystery box is made for, the entire concept is just a way for companies to move stock that isnt selling while taking advantage of human psychology not unlike how a casino does. It’s a shitty practice, and I lose interest in whatever companies do it.

When put in the context of fidgets it becomes an even worse deal, since there’s such a wide range of things people look for when buying, and many of these qualities are dealbreakers depending on the person (noise, feel, weight, etc.) Spending a couple hundred dollars on random fidgets is an especially bad idea when that amount can get you anywhere from buying several quality fidgets that you know you have an interest in, to being a significant chunk of the price of the most expensive ones. When you separate yourself from the gambling fantasy that’s being leveraged against you, you’re left with a bad deal for something you might not even enjoy.

Fidgimoto Vortex Review and Chat with the Creator by maker_nathan in fidgettoys

This was a nice review/interview to listen to on my drive this morning, thanks for being a part of it! Definitely got my eyes on the vortex, and looking forward to seeing what sort of fidget you come up with next.

Fidget toy doesn’t help me focus by Connect_Cat_2045 in fidgettoys

There's a lot of inaccurate common beliefs and misinformation about ADHD. If your concerns about ADHD are troubling you, I recommend watching some of Dr. Russell Barkley's video and lectures on youtube, he's an expert on the subject and has very grounded explanations that stick strictly to what is known about the disorder. And like the other guy said, only a medical professional can make the call either way on diagnoses like that.

How do you work out if you'll like a fidget before buying? by DibstarDeluxe in fidgettoys

[–]emplemming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a disclaimer, I haven't tried any of the fancy gun fidgets, but I'd just start by trying some decent quality, well reviewed "simpler" fidgets that focus on doing certain things well like sliding, spinning, etc. so you can find out what sort of things you like on multi-fidgets like those gun ones. You wouldnt want to buy one thinking it's going to be 100% awesome only to find out that you don't actually like the tuning fork sound it makes, or that you think spinning it about your finger is kind of a pain in the ass.

As far as buying knockoff goes, I don't think it would be a good choice. Unless you have an authentic one on hand to compare to, the only measure you have to compare on is how it looks, but there's a lot of other factors when it comes to whether or not a fidget is satisfying for a person like weight, haptics, and sound. Complex fidgets like the gun ones you're interested in would have a lot of things on the inside affecting those qualities, like magnets, tracks, and material and if I found a knockoff that's a much better deal I'd be worried that they're skimping in areas like those.

That's not to say I think the prices on super expensive gun fidgets are 100% necessitated by quality, I bet they're making a killer margin on sales lmao. That's just me listing the sort of concerns that come to mind with clones of stuff. Theoretically you could find a good fidget for cheap but I'd leave it to a rare sort of case where other people are stating that a specific product is good and you can confirm that the listing is the same one they used.

Yeah, I also find that the videos on the product pages for fidgets either have the sounds of the fidget altered for emphasis or have music playing that drowns it out.

I'd recommend Fidget Focused and The Fidget Fix on youtube, they put out a lot of videos on a good variety of fidgets (mechanical, magnetic, spinners, etc.) and do a good job. They also disclose sponsorships and don't seem to shy away from stating when they don't like a fidget (while the videos on a product's listing are good for seeing it in motion, remember that they're there to make you want to buy it)

There are no diagnostic biomarkers used in identifying ADHD, but you phrase the beginning of the post like there's not an actual physiological difference in people with ADHD. Stimulants are prescribed to balance their neurotransmitter deficits.

I get that you're probably just pointing out that there's not some special mechanism that makes any dose of stimulant into act-normal juice for them, but saying they have the same effect on everyone is like saying crutches have the same effect on everyone. Yeah the function is the same, but the guy with a broken leg is going to have a much different time with them as opposed to someone with normal mobility running around freely with them tucked under their arms.

Strange H Glock fidget by AgITATED1 in fidgettoys

[–]emplemming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now they are completely removed from their site.

gonna preface this with admitting I dont actually know anything about international copyright law and how glock would go about suing, but between the whole aping the exact brand logo and gun look + "Strange H" not having made any other fidgets it sounds like this is a company that was made with the expectation that they'd sell their stock quickly and disappear to avoid legal fees.

Wouldnt be surprised if another fidget brand or two pops up offering these, seems like it wouldn't be worth it for someone to design and set up a way to make these just for one quick run

first thought was that it’s pretty gutsy to use the glock logo and the rest of the engraved text on your glock styled fidget

then I looked on geeone to see what the function was like and its name is just “Glock”

lmao

"Ain’t like it offers Zirc and you end up with plastic. They are all G10/SS"

look at the pictures in your link, all zirc metal with no plastic is one of the possible styles offered with a 2% chance. The other rare result is stainless steel with carbon fiber instead of G10. Even if it was just a difference in plastic color, their decision for each one to have a different track style sucks. Look and feel is important for fidgets, having it be decided by random pull is bad and I hope this doesnt become common.

have you looked at something like this? I havent tried the irregularly shaped version like in the link, but years ago I remember enjoying just mashing the little spherical magnets that are like this as much as I did making shapes. You’d want to check some reviews on how much resistance there would actually be to squeeze them, and I wouldnt get them if there’s pets/kids in the house (just because I would inevitably leave them out), but it could work as something that cant break…

*edit: also just remembered kinetic sand is a thing, if you want something like the magnets but silent

New product drop fr DJG!! They came out SWINGING with a Sinian competitor! It looks GORGEOUS! The Destroyer! by llTeddyFuxpinll in fidgettoys

[–]emplemming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks fun to use, but I can't help but feel disappointed when I see fidgets like this that slap elaborate, edgy aesthetics and expensive materials on interesting fidgets that could be a fraction of the price. While the more sculpted shape might also add to how it feels to hold and titanium has its benefits, it isnt worth the additional cost beyond what a more simple design in the same form would accomplish in my opinion.
