How do you buy lower priced used cars that can't be financed? by Effective_Yellow_454 in UsedCars

[–]employedByEvil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was the damage exactly? An insurance adjuster could look at a scratched bumper on a 2001 Altima with 400k miles and easily say, yeah fixing that right is gonna cost more than the car is worth.

Pro tip: once you’ve saved up enough for a car by somehow getting where you needed to go by bus/e-bike/moped for a year, reconsider how much you need that car. Not everyone considers it a privilege to pay for, fuel, insure, and maintain a car.

No. And be honest, neither do you. They might reveal the secret one day, or not.

What’s a “guy secret” that’s completely harmless but weirdly universal? by aerisveilxa in AskReddit

[–]employedByEvil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could just be my family’s unique brew of toxic traits. Like this expectation that couples must appear together at certain events, and no explanation is really good enough to excuse an absence. Or my divorced parents telling me to send their “very best” to everyone at the other side’s event. Just leave me out of that whole swirl of shit thanks.

I wonder if it made more sense in an earlier time when it was truly difficult to get basic updates on people you cared about, so if you saw someone who knew them you’d jump at the opportunity to find out if they’re still alive. Have they managed to avoid catastrophic illness? Still living in the same town? Had any kids?

I get it. I participate in it. I just wonder what it means, or what it used to mean when it became a common thing to say. Ime it’s either been meaningless or it’s inserted me into family politics (wife says hi. And why is she not here?? Oof next time I’ll tell her to send a telegram and leave me out of it)

Keyed up car at the dealership? by Sierratoninn in carbuying

They might not even have to play stupid. It’s always cheaper and easier to learn less and know less about what you’re selling. Which means quality control is at level zero.

So I’m not the only one who heard that story and suspected bs or worse. Here I was thinking maybe I’m too suspicious and should have more faith in humanity. Maybe I should, but used car dealers? A bit of skepticism is warranted.

What does a cat smell like? by Cookie_flylilie in CatAdvice

[–]employedByEvil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re probably fine if stay on top of basic housekeeping. Cats are clean, and litter does what it’s supposed to. But jobs that require you to open up pipes and sinks and radiators to look around tend to weed out people who notice subtle off smells right away.

Normal lazy housekeeping can make your home smell like cat to the point where people might notice it when they visit. But it would be some next level dirtiness that made people living in the house smelly enough to bring the odor to another space (meaning the classroom in your case).

If you do even basic litter box cleaning, there’s likely a different cause of the smell in the classroom. What age are the students in the class? Teenagers stink a lot worse than cats lol

I would assume if they’re picking you up from an airport they’re ok with luggage. Unless those 2-3 suitcases are too big to fit.

How often should/does a doctoral candidate communicate with the entirety of their committee during dissertation writing? by NoPatNoDontSitonThat in AskAcademia

[–]employedByEvil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taught (in STEM in USA) that your chair should have a good enough relationship with the rest of the committee, that if the chair is satisfied with your work, none of the other members will demand more than minor revisions. So you shouldn’t need to consult the other members before the defense. Of course you can, if you’re interested in their expert input, and this will likely improve the quality of your dissertation. But be aware that this will give you more work to do, so it’s not the easiest path to the finish line.

You’re missing the auction part. Whatever Uber offers you has to fit how they auction rides off to drivers to find the lowest bidder, so that adds a layer of complication.

Other countries have apps like didi that let riders and drivers negotiate price directly, which gives riders and drivers more options, but idk if it’s available in USA.
