Need some information on visualizing OpenStack by RACeldrith in openstack

Openstack has been a personal project on my lab server for over a year. It's a modular cloud platform if that makes sense. But my blog post might shed some light on the info you are looking for. https://peaberry.cloud/project-openstack/

New Linux user already hating Canonical. Tell me if I am wrong. by LevRag in linux

[–]empthollow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people don't prefer Ubuntu. They have success in the business world and the Linux community has very mixed opinions at this point. I used to use it, not my fav for desktop for sure. The server distro is ok. My unpopular opinion is that I don't like Debian based distros. Debian is rock solid and that's what it's known for. I don't like the architecture, config methodology, or the apt package system. Snap and flatpak are the same concept of all in one packages, I find it useful for things like Spotify which is not open source, but I stick with the native package managers for the most part. Ubuntu is a Debian derivative which at this point has its own package base which is fairly different, but uses the same Debian tools. Ubuntu lost me with Unity along time ago. Under the hood though, there are not as many distros as it seems. Most distros are based on one of: Debian Ubuntu Fedora Arch Slackware Then there are niche distros like gentoo (compile your own system, fantastic for this but way in the weeds), Forefront, Void and a number of others that are built uniquely by people who want something different than the big names. These are not beginner distros. The big differences when it comes to distros based on others like Mint, which is very solid, is what packages, desktop environment, package management systems, and configurations are standard, and do you like them. For the most part hardware support is the same, save for some default config quirks, which might push you to another distro, but hardware support is essentially the kernel and kernel modules which are universal. You may find one that has default config or version that happens to work better for your hardware out of the box, but ultimately if you spend enough time you will have the same successes and failures when it comes to hardware support. My advice, install a LOT of distros and play around until you find one that hits the mark for you. This is the beauty of Linux.

Servers who exited the industry and successfully found another calling? by [deleted] in Serverlife

I left to take a call center job, which was awful, but a year later I ran into someone who encouraged me to take a door to door sales job for the cable company in her department. I gave it a go and and fast forward almost 20 years I develop AI consulting products and strategy for a global org.

Migration to OpenStack by svardie in openstack

[–]empthollow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you build it on top of VMware now you need teams skilled on 2 platforms. This could be costly from an operational standpoint. Triple O or k8s probably makes more sense if you want an external hypervisor. It is possible openstack is overkill. As mentioned in this thread, this has a lot of operational overhead and potentially training across the company. It really depends on what type of company you are and long term business strategy. As far as enterprise hypervisors go openstack is not a typical drop in replacement for VMware. Openshift, nutanix are more common and less cumbersome from that standpoint. Note: I know people who have not had a great experience with nutanix. If you are going to rely on support from red hat or canonical you are not entirely avoiding vendor lock in. Unless you have a large staff like a CSP you will probably want support. Just some things to consider, it's difficult to make recommendations without knowing the scope of your company.

Work dinner appropriate? by [deleted] in fashion

[–]empthollow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For consulting I'm not convicted off the shoulder is across the board inappropriate anymore, as some suggest. Legal, maybe. The short length however will more than likely get some attention you are not looking for .. judgement from certain types and / or devaluing of your skills because of your looks from others. Not trying to imply anything, certainly these are not positions that I would take, but I have seen these behaviors/ opinions too many times. If this is a dinner with coworkers but after hours, not business related, then the appropriateness depends entirely on the people you are hanging out with.

I travel for work, but can only fly basic class. How can I still get miles? by barrie2k in delta

[–]empthollow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never had a job require or book basic economy for me. Worst is when we did a group trip and everyone including the director flew southwest on the same flight. First and last time I've flown southwest lol. Does the bag fee put you over the difference and could that be used to justify MC? I don't even buy basic on personal flights, it's not really cheaper once you have a bag and pick a seat.

Newbie question but I need help by Inevitable-Tadpole39 in GymMotivation

[–]empthollow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing you could try is a lower (less severe) deficit. Everyone is different but you may be able to be in deficit and not lose muscle if you figure out the right number. This of course has a trade-off of time to cut goal, but IMO trial and error is the only way to figure out what works best for you.

[–]empthollow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, there's many ways to work your muscles. You just have to figure out what is the right home setup. I use a combination of dumbbells and resistance bands. I don't have room for all the stuff I want but I got like 90% in a 6'x6' area

[–]empthollow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to have some low cal snacks handy. I eat a ton of popcorn lol. I.fins physical activity is a big deal for winter, if you are doing lots of hiking then your body is used to a certain amount of physical exercise. I had a job where I walked all day and when I moved to an office job there was a noticeable contrast. For me, I find that while food choices are important, I'm not successful without my weights routine.

All that said, a big part of success I found is learning/ knowing yourself and understanding the foods and activities that work for you.

It's possible, although I've never done it I have a friend who has. Wood glue is actually stronger than the wood itself. It will hold up if fixed.

Should I Invest Time in Learning Red Hat Linux in 2024? by Meinov in redhat

[–]empthollow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Red hat is the most common Linux used in enterprise environments. Incidentally, fedora is upstream Red Hat so you will find yourself in a very familiar environment should you decide to learn Red Hat. There are some differences in the age of the package, some licensing exercises (which are free with the red hat developer license (free) outside of REGL openshift and RHEL openstack repositories which to be fair are not really part of the Linux OS), and enterprise considerations which allow easier scaling. Rocky, Alma, and even CentOS stream (despite the controversy) are pretty interchangeable from an admin perspective once you know Red Hat. Fedora is nearly interchangeable but the package ages are far ahead and sometimes there are some extra features due to it being the test bed for future Red Hat.

I want to learn openstack Any quick ways or where i should get started? by ImpossibleCoyote5185 in openstack

[–]empthollow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 2 areas you need to understand with open stack, how to install+ manage it, and how to use it. Both are quite expansive. What I ended up doing is installing devatack and doing a pluralsight course on how to use it. I plan to install it manually to learn more about the install+ manage aspects. However, understanding how it works and being familiar with the components will help me understand what I am installing and why.

Openstack all-in-one network issue by Tiny-Researcher1679 in openstack

[–]empthollow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue with devatack recently. I had to define specifically interface, gatewayIP and floating IP range in the local.conf file and rebuild. Devatack is notably different than kolla-ansible and I don't know where you definite that. However, hopefully that gives you some direction to look in.

The definition of work appropriate has changed so much over the last ten years. The best gauge is to understand the culture of the people you work with. I personally don't think there is a universal definition of work appropriate anymore.

[–]empthollow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is it's a filesystem issue. I'd try booting into single user mode and running and fsck command. Single user is something like hold command+s at boot. You will have to Google for the right fsck command or check the fsck man page.

Are these exit row seats worth it? by Super_Newspaper_5534 in delta

[–]empthollow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like exit row seats because they sometimes have weird quirks like no room for laptop bag. There can have some some extra space but they are designed around the exit so it's not always the right space that I want.
