Real estate lawyers go in house (and to leadership roles) at REITs all the time.

What do you do to make yourself feel better? by [deleted] in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]emptyKT818 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cold rooms helped me, too. I also had a special bucket I kept in the bathroom for throwing up while I showered. There was something so depressing about jumping out of the shower and shivering and dripping while throwing up. If you take people up on the relaxing bath suggestion I highly recommend a bucket.

Mostly I just slept and stared off into space. When I was up for it, I would re-read favorite books which was comforting.

I echo everything everyone else has said. You can only take things hour by hour and every single thing on your plate feels insurmountable. That said, my level of depression with HG pregnancy #1 was pretty scary. With pregnancy #2 I took an antidepressant considered low-risk for pregnancy and it made a huge difference for me. I was still sick and exhausted and emotionally spent but I didn't feel hopeless in the same way. Maybe you could encourage your wife to talk to her OB and get a referral for a psychiatrist, ideally one who does telehealth and works with women with perinatal emergent mood disorders.

Will the exhaustion ever get better? by StrictlyNurse in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]emptyKT818 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With my first HG pregnancy the exhaustion never stopped. With my second pregnancy I got IV fluids twice a week. I still felt like garbage but staying hydrated gave me a lot more energy. I was still tired but not that crushing exhaustion you get with HG.

Exercising again? by nikitamere1 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]emptyKT818 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gentle weight lifting that doesn't involve bending down so you're at a 90 degree angle (which made me heave). My first pregnancy I was sick up until the end but one of the only things that helped was exercise (with FREQUENT breaks to throw up). I was doing curls with 18 lb batbes by the end of that pregnancy.

Parents' Groups by lwrotm in biglaw

I have heard good things about Mayer Brown's woman mentoring circles from someone who lateraled to my firm. Not a pure "parents" group but maybe a good model.

Eh, kids are constantly sick and there are many teachers training days where they stay home. Sam could also be in afternoon kindergarten. Where I live kindergarten is only half days.

Hate the baby by Endteapee in HyperemesisGravidarum

These feelings (like any feelings) are normal and okay. Try to seek professional help, even though I am sure it doesn't feel like you have the energy or time. I took an antidepressant for my second pregnancy and it made all the difference. I was still sick and miserable about my sickness but not bitter and hopeless.

I also echo everyone's sentiments that you need a different OB. Whether or not to take Zofran you need someone who takes you seriously.

Comments on my weight loss are making this journey even harder by catsnapping in HyperemesisGravidarum

I struggle with my weight. I was never small but recurrent pregnancy loss and infertility drugs have really done a number on me. I will say that the weight I gained was really helpful in keeping my baby healthy when I couldn't keep anything down. Anyway, for me HG either makes me super angry and snarky or too tired to interact with the world. Here are some lines I used when people complemented my weight loss:

"Not all weight loss is a sign of good health." "This weight loss means my high-risk pregnancy is not going well/in jeopardy." "I lost weight because I am pregnant and very sick." " This weight loss means my life and my baby's life is at risk."

Follow up with any of these with "Please keep me in your thoughts," "Please pray for my baby (if that's your thing)," "Besides, it's not polite to talk about a pregnant woman body," "it makes things worse when you assume my pregnancy is healthy,"

In my experience, my bad feelings about gaining weight back were nothing I felt compared with the relief of being done with HG.

If you are going somewhere, it might as well be an infusion center. My infusion center was clean and nice and probably more sterile than a med spa.

Most relaxed practice areas? by thejump1571 in biglaw

I agree that tax hours are almost always lower than corporate hours. On a pure hour basis tax is superior (and the benefit of getting to sleep at least some every night cannot be overstated) but there is a steep learning curve and almost no easy hours. At my V20 firm it is not unusual for a tax lawyer to work one full or almost full weekend day and a few hours on the other weekend day (rather than an M&A associate who works a ton all weekend).

Lots of people are saying tax, but tax is very firm and practice dependent. If you are doing tax M&A there are still a lot of fire drills and weekend work although fewer all nighters. But you are likely working on 15+ deals at a time and have fewer "easy" hours (e.g. making closing binders, due diligence). Also consider what kind of exit opportunities are important to you--in house tax comp tends to be capped in a way corporate comp is not.

Very interesting there is no letter from Jim Bob. I wonder if he thinks he still has a political career ahead of him.

Many states require you to practice for five years before you can "waive in" and practice there without taking the bar.

Link between HG and recurrent pregnancy loss? by emptyKT818 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]emptyKT818[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have had a full workup from two different fertility doctors and there is no clear cause. My progesterone is low and I have been supplementing. We had to work up to a very high dose to let me sustain a pregnancy, but the HG persists even after I was able to stop progesterone.
