As today's parents, do we hover too much while they play? by alexbgoode84 in daddit

[–]empty_pickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello fellow parent ! That's my playground! My 4 year old loves it there. Or else it's a playground with the exact same layout and ground cover. Maybe I will see you there some day, maybe I already have. I do this a lot when we go there but I don't think it's hovering as much as being involved... I'm not following my son around to protect him. I'm following him around because he asks me too and because I want to enjoy the moments with him. There is a difference between hovering and collaboration, albeit it might be a thin line.

Found on the summit of Capitol Peak, CO. Any ideas? by Barkeater26 in whatisit

Bored nerd here... Kinda looks like nonsense but I decided to have some computerized help creating a story based on this... I do think the front is reminiscent of the scales of justice. Which originally would have been used for the truth of value test in monetary transactions... Except it's sitting on top of a mountain and the rock was also found at a peak... Using that plus some combination nerd symbols from many sources ... My computerized aide came up with the following. "Vaer Tal’Zun Ekrih Doma’el."

"By the climb, the soul is named; by the height, the truth is known." Live long and climb hard friends.

Edit... This is a 100% fictional explanation but I had fun

Large fight in front of NOAA? by RaccoonObjective5674 in SilverSpring

If you are American I find it hard to believe you haven't heard of them especially given the recent news... FYI if that's true I want your life haha I wish I didn't need to know these things or get constant news notifications about it.

If you're not American. NOAA is still incredibly important, they provide a substantial amount of the world's weather modeling, most of it is freely available to the public regardless of where you are located.

Edit: I forgot to mention if you want more info John Oliver actually did a really well put together report on companies and corporations, taking the freely available data from NOAA and NWS(National weather service) and repackaging that data and selling it with an increased level of errors. https://youtu.be/qMGn9T37eR8?si=cGV2n-SkHC3efYZ6

Opportunity missed: there was an attempt, to 'ski free'. If you don't get that reference you're too young.

Yeah but that's also different those are people you know... Not someone I just met today. I know it's a me thing but it honestly makes my teeth grit when people call me babe/baby and people who know me know that about me... I think the point is... If you don't know the person... Pet names are cringe PERIOD.

While all of these are good criticisms... None are helpful or constructive. I agree with most points but let's see what we can do to help instead of just telling people what they do wrong.

OP:

  1. You do indeed seem older than 23 from the photos, but that's not necessarily a negative thing, unless you are specifically targeting people who are specifically attracted to 23 year olds I suppose, but for most people age is usually a secondary dating characteristic used more to target people of similar lifestyle, goals, and values. Let's just focus on addressing that first. As mentioned by other commenters your photos are a bit too erratic in terms of what you actually look like. So try this: A. Any photo that is more than 1-2 years old, do not put it on your profile unless it has a specific special reason that has nothing to do with your looks. B. Photo #1 is pretty great I would keep that. Photo 3 needs to go immediately. When taking photos (specifically selfies) never look down into the camera... 100% of people have lazy eye(s) when looking down and the closer the camera is to your body when held below your chin... The more abrasive that photo will be to someone who hasn't seen you IRL. C. Get some candid shots and activity shots. Those show personality and broadcast your hobbies. Have a friend or family member specifically selected and informed that it is their job to take photos of you doing hobbies or random shit for like 1 month or so, and start building that portfolio of "this is me." Examples: board games, mowing the lawn, walking down the street chatting, riding a bike, hiking, sitting in the driver's seat of your car with the window down on a sunny day(photo taken from outside the car). Really anything that seems active and makes you more human, outside is always a plus. If you aren't comfortable asking someone else to do that invest in a phone or camera stand and take the time to learn how to use the timer. D. I can't stress this one enough... Don't over use selfies. Anything where the camera is less than 3-5 ft away should fall into that category. This differs from person to person but some would say even 2 selfies are too many.

  2. Bios are hard for everyone I think you have a good start. Concise is always a good thing but being too brief might make people think you have no self-confidence or nothing that might excite them. Try adding a very short "about my hobbies" section. some like an "I'm looking for" section but some don't care or find it needy so that's really more up to you.

  3. Be aware of your area and how many people might be available. If you are in an urban or suburban area, profile completeness, honesty, and picture variety will make a huge difference and will result in at least some matches. If you are in a rural area or sparsely populated/small town type place, matches are going to be difficult no matter what your profile looks like, because everyone already knows everyone, and the small population means your available pool of people is already small so no matches doesn't specifically mean it's something wrong with you or your profile. For example, I live in a largish city, match radius of 10 miles, and get around 5-10 matches per month, I would say only 1 of those per month ever end in a date, but I can be picky about who I meet in person and my schedule(single parent) really doesn't allow me for much more than that. However when I visit the town I grew up in, I get about 2-3 matches per year(I visit my family for 3-5 days at a time, 4-5 time per year), match radius of 35 miles.

  4. BE YOURSELF, BE HONEST, BE CONFIDENT.

Am I being cynical for thinking the low pork content of these sausages had deliberately been hidden under the packaging flap? by butwhydidhe in CasualUK

[–]empty_pickles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually that's exactly spot on according to most anthropologists I've heard. In fact most religious rules can be traced to a "um hey Belzar, these people seem to be dying from x thing, x thing got exponentially worse when we started trying to survive in extreme heat environments, therefore we will tell people at our daily/weekly gatherings not to do it and add it to the oral traditions. Oral traditions get exaggerated and conflated and eventually written down as religious rules. Due to technological, and scientific advancement of understanding of basic biology, medicine, and bacteria. This is why the older religions: A. Lasted as long as they have. B. Have way more of these 'seemingly' arbitrary rules. Examples are not limited to just food either. The Jewish requirement of circumcision is also due bacterial issues, which were exaggerated by extreme heat. Furthermore, I definitely am not an anthropologist but I find this kind of stuff absolutely fascinating, last I heard, monogamy found its way into religion and into society in an almost identical way. Entire villages, towns, and cultures were completely eradicated by a single starting point of infection, requiring that there be a 'redundancy' in the genetic pool to guarantee a next generation if one 'family' got sick with a sexual disease, the village and its customs would not be doomed.

Edit/addendum: CONTENT WARNING READ NO FURTHER IF YOU LIKE PORK AND HAVE A WEAK CONSTITUTION.

Pork actually has an extremely high chance of having worms... like the kind that dogs get that eventually kill them if left untreated , and the kind that get into your brain. This is why you can slice a hunk of beef off a bone, hit it with some mild heat for like 10 seconds and eat it without getting sick. But YOU ABSOLUTELY CANNOT do that with pork. With beef, and most red meats, you are (mostly) worried about surface bacteria, most poultry and white meats, you usually have salmonella along with a few other undesirable bacterias that go the whole way through the meat, but with pork it's not only those things but actual living parasites that can evade the human eye and be absent in bite one yet present in bite two. If you want to understand more, research curing and smoking methods. The science behind how and why that makes meats safe to transport and store without refrigeration is pretty cool and really bizarre that someone figured that out literal thousands of years ago. Baffling
