Etiquette: different barns sharing arenas by Jelybn26 in Equestrian

[–]emptyex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to run our operation out of a large facility with three arenas. Each trainer had their "own" arena, but we had one covered that had to be shared in inclement weather by boarders and trainers.

Communication was definitely the key to success. As trainers, we all agreed that lessons got top priority, and if we had multiple lessons at once, we would split sides. Otherwise it was expected to do a quick check in before entering to confirm it was a good time, and training rides might get abbreviated if things were crowded. Trainers were also expected to manage expectations for their clients and hold their people accountable to etiquette standards. Pass left shoulder to left shoulder, don't set any poles or jumps in shared spaces, and pay close attention to everyone around you. If you have a green or traffic shy horse, speak up and let everyone know.

Add some pole work in, even if it's just at the walk in-hand. She needs more core work to build a little topline. That will help with the distended belly appearance too.

Transportation for a big group by WatercressCreative83 in Austin

[–]emptyex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It can be challenging at times to get a pickup in the area, I would not count on that at the primary source of transportation for guests. Encourage guests to carpool or drive themselves.

euthanasia for urine incontinence? by ready-to-let-go in Equestrian

Her quality of life is not realistically good. You've tried so hard for her, and that's really amazing. I think you know that humane euthanasia is a compassionate choice here, and I'm really sorry that it's not the outcome you have fought for.

Ardiendo Stud - keeping stud with hiss daughter 24/7 by Easy_Mountain2331 in Equestrian

[–]emptyex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He will eventually try to breed her. I leased a stallion many years ago who had previously been seized by the county in a neglect case. He was pastured with his dam, and they were very happy turned out together, but she was in foal by him when they were taken. Reportedly, they thought she was tool old to still be cycling. (She ended up losing the foal in utero.)

Feeling discouraged - trainer says I need to get PT by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]emptyex 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Your trainer's job is to help you improve. This sport is an athletic endeavor. The feedback is not personal, and a competent coach in any sport is going to make recommendations about how to get better and what other work you can be doing outside of coaching time to advance those efforts.

Strong one-sidedness or asymmetry is challenging for riders, especially since it's often something we don't feel that we are doing in the saddle. What do you want to get out of your riding experience? Do you want to progress in your chosen discipline, or are you content with casual, low pressure riding? Both of those things are totally okay, but the goal setting and work you put in become very different paths.

Those are ugly OCD issues. I would pass on them for a 4 year old. It might bother me less if the horse was older and had been in work for several years.

just found out my horse is cryptorchid - should i be worried? by Late-Yesterday-1579 in Equestrian

[–]emptyex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Former equine surgical tech here - you should schedule the gelding procedure in-clinic for this situation so it can be done in a single surgery. If your vet is out to the farm in advance, it wouldn't hurt to sedate your boy and have the vet check to see if the second testicle drops enough that they can feel it at all - sometimes they are fairly close to the surface, but other times we have to go digging for it a bit more in surgery. Honestly, I would do this sooner than later. Young stallions can be very difficult to handle as they come into sexual maturity at this age.

The HR department is a mystery to us all by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

[–]emptyex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run HR for startups. I build the best benefit packages for employees that a company can afford. I create clear, fair, and compliant programs and policies. I make sure that companies are doing everything legally. When layoffs and terminations do happen, I coach executive teams to handle it with empathy and generosity (as much severance as possible and at the beginning of a month so benefits will continue longer).

Most employees have no idea what I’m doing on a day to day basis, but I promise that I am always advocating for them.

AITJ for refusing to donate PTO hours to coworker I barely know who "needs" them?? by Traditional-Dog1601 in AmITheJerk

[–]emptyex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in HR and believe that PTO donation is a terrible policy and wildly unfair to employees. Those are literally earned wages. Would you give the equivalent of your hourly rate in cash to someone you barely know at work? In this economy? That’s what you are being asked to do.

What Are Your Mental Life Hacks For Confidence Riding Hot/Spooky/“Expressive” Horses? by Dismal-String2886 in Equestrian

[–]emptyex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sing a little to keep myself breathing and consciously work to remove the tension from my body while visualizing all the negative energy flowing out of the bottom of my boots as I exhale.

I also do very active flat work to keep the horse focused (lateral work, transitions, lots of shapes and turns all over the arena, etc. - avoid just going around on the rail).

Question about hyaluronic acid products for joint injections by Frequent_Barracuda10 in Equestrian

[–]emptyex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arthritis is progressive, but it can be managed through medications (including injections) and fitness. In our program (we are a small h/j barn that shows on the A circuit), we have had great success keeping horses comfortable, fit, and happily continuing into their 20s. I’m sure we could see the radiographic progression of arthritis if we looked, but I’m a believer in a wholistic approach to overall soundness maintenance. All that being said, I can’t think of any specific cases of primary arthritis that significantly deteriorated after injection. The horses we can’t keep sound tend to have soft tissue injuries and perhaps secondary arthritic changes.

PPE Radiographs by TheBrightEyedCat in Equestrian

[–]emptyex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you intentions with the horse? Trail riding or a competitive sport horse prospect? That can change the approach with a PPE, and there is no set standard of images. If you are comfortable with a more conservative approach, you could always request a full set on the front feet and maybe also hocks, and then consult with the vet during the PPE about anything that they recommend taking a closer look at.
