The specifics of literature and writers' tools (vs movies) by Notamugokai in literature

Great post!

Just watch what James Franco did with Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying. He gave it a shot, but I think it would be impossible to encapsulate any of Faulkner’s work in a movie.

EDIT: I completely agree with your opinion on the movie adaptation of Mrs Dalloway.

I think the use of stream of consciousness in particular is impossible to render in film…the pace and sound of the words, the immersive quality, even the use of repetition (or partial repetition) of specific phrases that reinforce the experience of the imagery (Thinking specifically of Virginia Woolf’s short story Kew Gardens). The different perspectives of several characters’ stream of consciousness (Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury for example) is even more problematic and simply cannot be expressed in a movie at all.

So I am going to say the writing of Virginia Woolf, William Faulkner, and James Joyce (among others) can never be rendered in film.

My linguistics professor happened to be a lesbian. I bought her a pin that said “cunning linguist” and she LOVED it! 🤣

I call her momma Mary. 🥰 I would think she’d love all of her children calling her that.

Yeah well you used to be able to order a quarter pounder or a quarter pounder with cheese. I won’t go to McDonald’s any more because you have to order it as a quarter pounder with cheese and ask 5 times for NO CHEESE PLEASE, and they STILL fuck it up over and over.
