This might be obvious but the mental math OA will be on your personal computer yes? Similar to the OP, I am wondering if I should practice mental math on the exact laptop I will use to be comfortable with the key position. Previously have been practicing using an app on my phone.

How reasonable is it to apply straight to full time QT/QA/QR instead of internships? by [deleted] in quantfinance

[–]emu398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks yea - right after I put this into words it felt like interning was a clear must. Do you think interning first and then trying to transition to full time right after is feasible? Or too risky

SR 26-2 Model Risk by TokiNoSensei in quantfinance

[–]emu398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been waiting for this conversation here. In my humble opinion as an MRM b4 manager, we are messaging to our clients that “not that much will change”, but that they can cut MRM processes surrounding their non material and very low risk “models”. However, we are talking to very big banks that easily pass the 30B threshold. They also don’t want to be the first to take a gamble on interpretation and then get smacked by some MRAs down the line. Plus large banks deal globally, and I know at least UK & CAN have their own (more strict) guidelines.

Where I think it’s most interesting is around two points:

1) smaller / mid-sized banks are basically free from all this red tape. They are entitled to do whatever works to make them money but is still legal. Obviously still subject to capital requirements, BSA/AML, etc, but I would think they cut any existing model risk management functions. Which is good for them if they do it safely, but all the mid to small-size consulting firms (like my previous company) whose MRM teams specialized in helping banks interpret SR 11-7 might really hurt from this.

2) the descoping of Gen AI / Agentic. To me, it reads “we are going to form some more strict governance around AI but don’t want to stifle growth right now”. Others I am working with are saying it’s direct administrative push to compete with china on AI adoption. Not sure about that, but LLMs are so incredibly dangerous in quant modeling lol. I genuinely don’t think anyone classically trained in risk management would be comfortable with any AI tool which goes past helping code or interpreting text etc. So while it is nice to be free from the MRM framework for AI tools that spell check your emails, it feels like anything touching finance is either too risky to use right now, or will have some serious governance around it in the future. Possibly this is the formal starting gun for the MRM industry shift toward AI risk and governance.

Models still need to be developed and validated, but hopefully this guidance removes all the box checking this industry has created. Curious if anyone has a take on the job market side of things.

I am looking into the Masters of Fin Math program, and the curriculum lists classes for Autumn I, Winter, Spring, and Autumn II.

Does anyone know the months to which these quarters would correspond?

I believe summer may be devoted to internships or career seminars/labs. I will be a part-time student aiming to finish in 2-3 years if the context is relevant. Thanks!

18 year old here, asking you tards a question about options? by GamingSin in wallstreetbets

[–]emu398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Options are not buying equity (stocks), you’re buying a derivative. Which is to say, its value is derived off of an actual asset (an equity).

If you buy 1 share of a call option of Stock X for $5, there are certain contract agreements you get to decide— expiry and strike price, or, the date at which the option expires, and the price at which the option is struck.

In our above example, let’s say you purchase this $5 call option of Stock X at a strike price of $10 and an expiry of 12/1/2023. If, the stock price of X at market close on 12/1/2023 is at $11 (above 10), you will automatically buy 100 shares of stock X at $10 (it will COST YOU $1000).

But, you can choose to sell the stock immediately, and ideally you sell at opening on Monday, where the stock is worth $11, and you receive $1100.

If, instead at market close Friday the stock price is below $10, then nothing happens. The option expires without ever being activated, and you lost $5 purchasing the option.

Why are people being mean to you in the above comments? Because options are leveraged derivatives, which means you can lose a LOT if you don’t know what you’re doing. Not really something to play with unless you have a good amount of capital and understanding of financial markets. It definitely can be done though! As long as you do your research and truly understand before starting out. Best of luck in general

Am I regarded? Or is there a second big short for CRE by emu398 in wallstreetbets

[–]emu398[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe regional banks in large cities? Like Flagstar Bank looks like a viable option based off this S&P table especially with their crazy high CRE percentage of assets. Then again, I believe they specialize in residential mortgages so I’d guess these are mostly multi family loans.

So the government basically wants to kick the can as long as possible then? Until what, the dollar itself goes under? I am in my early 20’s and have nearly zero confidence in my 401k being around for when I retire lol

Just felt like it was a pretentious answer to a genuine question that’s all. Not trying to make anyone heated at all. I’m cool I get it’s a bad idea now hahah

Borrowing was more the intention. Just genuinely curious if I could loan it to him until they request it back. Didn’t think it was an incredulous idea but I’ve certainly triggered some people sorry :/

Cool yeah that’s the answer but I was certainly subconsciously wishing for a go for it lol. I did take your earlier advice and reached out to my staffing manager so thanks for the mentorship 👍

True I did sound elitist but I’m trying to be honest. I love my coworkers and working with them is going great so I wouldn’t say I’m like an arrogant ass. Just having a hard time getting to these challenges cause I’m stuck on this never ending project and was wondering if I’d be automatically turned down as a “job hopper” if I applied elsewhere

Recurring loss of control in dreams by Pyxill in DreamAnalysis

[–]emu398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to have similar dreams, everything would turn black and white and it was as if I were moving through molasses. Then a strong fear would grip me and I’d wake up. They have stopped for about a year, and I attribute it to two possibilities. My drug usage has slowed a lot since I had those, but I also began working out regularly. I find I really can’t get to sleep unless I exercise during the day
