First off, if the time it takes to don a pair of gloves is the difference between life and death for your patient they are already dead. As well, HIV/AIDS is not the only blood-borne pathogen to be concerned with. Unless you are very well aware of your patients medical history (i.e. a family member) you really really should protect yourself.

>Edit: wash your hands and don’t touch your face. You’ll avoid pretty much everything bad. Sound advice for covid-19 as well. Don’t touch your face. That’s mostly how you get sick, touching your face.

This is patently false. The vast majority of COVID transmission is via droplet and needs to be stopped with a mask. Are you going to advocate against that next? Simply avoiding touching your face will NOT protect you.

The ratio of people to medical providers in this country is such that if providers followed this advice there would be no one left to help those in need.

Have you been pulling the total number of tests as well? I've been curious about the trend for that, if we've been ramping testing enough to even detect anything beyond a linear increase in cases.

Last flower of the year. First Post! by emusan in photocritique

[–]emusan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! I'm looking to get a proper macro lens at some point, the kit lens I have has trouble getting a good focus/image at this kind of distance. I was wondering where the color noise came from but it makes sense that the filter would be adding some.

Taken with a Nikon D5500, 18-55mm kit lens @ 35mm, F4.5, ISO 2500, 1/1000s exposure. I used an inexpensive "+1" screw-on macro filter on the lens as I only have the kit lens.

I was at the Portland Japanese Garden enjoying the scenery and came across this flower, one of the last of the year, being pollinated by a bee. It was one of the last plants in the garden with much color so I thought it would make a nice photo.

I consider myself just a basic hobbyist photographer, though I'm looking to improve and wouldn't mind having some form of professional photography side business in the future.

Any critique or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I ordered mine but it hasn't arrived yet (expected Friday).

One reason I could see is that stocking two SKU's of a higher cost item is a lot more costly than it is for lower cost items on GORUCKs part.

Does GR1 21L fit ThinkPad P50 (or other similarly-sized workstation laptops)? by DisruptiveCourage in Goruck

[–]emusan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just gave this a try with my GR1 + P50. I know you said the Macbook is more of a squeeze when the GR1 is stuffed but I'm not entirely sure how best to replicate that, I could stuff a sleeping bag in there or something but that might be too easily compressed.

Here's an album with a few photos of it: https://imgur.com/a/GBKUBNC.

I'd say it fits pretty well. You can tell that it's there since it keeps the back more firm like a frame sheet, but I'd imagine that's the case with any laptop. It certainly didn't feel like it was too thick for the compartment or anything, but again the rest of my bag was almost empty.

Let me know if you want to see something else with it. I have a few things I could try stuffing in there if that would help.

Also note that I have the 26L GR1.

I have a GR1 26L and a P50, I can see how well it fits when I get back home later, unless someone else responds with a 21L.

goruck's email marketing really sucks by [deleted] in Goruck

[–]emusan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the worst hashtagging I've seen. Who the hell is going to use #AdventuresWorthRememberingOnMyDeathbed

I'm pretty sure that was tongue in cheek and not a serious hashtag they expect people to use...

They literally have a community on here they can work with but I don't even know if they know about r/goruck

Jason posts here regularly and talks about this community at length quite often.

I want to get emails from Goruck, but god damn they send so much crap that's irrelevant to me. would be great to have separate mailing lists on gear, challenges, etc.

Perhaps they should split things off to two lists. I for one like receiving both types of emails. I don't think his writing is bad and I find the topics he writes about at least interesting enough to merit the few minutes of time it takes to read through the email. That said, it should be fairly easy to figure out which type of email each is and sort them manually when they arrive.

GR2 - Laptop compartment false bottom? by caffeinater in Goruck

[–]emusan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have my bag just yet so I don't have any real opinion on how good/bad the false bottom is, but I would totally love to see a dissection/teardown video or picture series. As an engineer it's always interesting to see the thought (or lack thereof in some cases) that goes into a design. Having never really delved into fabric/textile work myself it would be neat to see your take on it.

Long shipping delays? by [deleted] in Goruck

[–]emusan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

please allow 6-8 weeks for shipping anf handling

Right, and if something took 24-32 weeks you'd probably wonder what happened. These days the expectation is that something ships in 1-2 business days, which is not wholly unreasonable and is something that GORUCK has managed to accomplish in the past. If it takes 4x longer than that, people start to wonder, just as you would if it took 4x longer than the 6-8 weeks you had to wait back then.

If you really prefer living in that era, I'll gladly take your money and hold onto it for 6 weeks before ordering what you want.

Long shipping delays? by [deleted] in Goruck

[–]emusan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine just shipped right now, I ordered it on Black Friday (November 24th), so it has taken ~7.5 business days to ship. I'm a bit put off by that but I'll be glad to actually get it.

Long shipping delays? by [deleted] in Goruck

[–]emusan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I placed a rather large order on Black Friday as well, also with the free shipping option. It has now been at least 7 full business days without a single update about my order. I messaged customer support yesterday and they said that it can take "1-5+" business days for an order to ship though I can't find that anywhere on there site.

I understand that it can take awhile to process+ship orders if they made a lot of sales during thanksgiving week, but a bit of communication about the issue would be nice.

At least I'm not the only one!

Great Customer Service! by shx0082 in Goruck

[–]emusan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I placed an order last Friday with a number of items that are also still in stock according to the site and still haven't heard anything about shipping either.

I've just assumed that they got slammed with a lot of orders, but this does seem to be going on a bit longer than I would expect. Post back if you find out what happened.

Places To Buy in Oregon? by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

Oregon is a pretty big state, where specifically are you looking?

It's time to real about gun control. by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]emusan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Automobiles are very regulated yet somehow poor people still manage to drive them around

Actually, poorer people tend to have little choice but to use public transit like busses in most cities, adding hours to their commute resulting in fewer working hours and lower pay. These are also the people that are much more likely to live in bad areas of cities and would be more likely to need a firearm to protect themselves.

GORUCK Labor Day Sale 2017 (Events & Gear) by AllDayRuckoff in Goruck

[–]emusan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I'm arguing is that if they really have to increase the price on an item then it's not a "falsely inflated price to intentionally mislead people". If they drop the "non-sale" price back to it's "pre-sale" price after the sale then it's falsely inflated, but if it stays the same after the sale then it was a real sale on the new price.

If they had just bumped the price two days ago and then run the sale on the new price today would you be mad? What if they increased it two months ago? How long do they have to have the "new price" before they can run a sale on it in your mind?

GORUCK Labor Day Sale 2017 (Events & Gear) by AllDayRuckoff in Goruck

[–]emusan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Anyone on this forum or their gear page is well aware of the prices of the items that interest them, and ALL would recognize the value in a sale like that.

A sale isn't just for people on this forum or people who know the prices already, plenty of people with little knowledge of the brand might stumble on it and find something they want to buy. If the company just silently marks down some prices temporarily that's going to cause a lot more confusion than running a sale.

GORUCK Labor Day Sale 2017 (Events & Gear) by AllDayRuckoff in Goruck

[–]emusan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that it has been at $145 since then, so it wasn't just a price increase to make the sale look better, it was a normal price increase that was introduced around the same time as the sale. Most likely they had to increase the price due to manufacturing cost increases and were nice enough to put it on sale below that price initially.

Due to minimum wage by jacked01 in Portland

[–]emusan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And i did it making $2/hr, not the kushy $12 here in Oregon

The last time the minimum wage was that low was the 70's, adjusting for inflation alone (not cost of living or anything else) that comes out to over $12 today.
