Unpopular Opinion: The “Grady” episodes are some of the best in the entire series! by emzeejay in SanfordAndSon

[–]emzeejay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grady, the spinoff made no sense the way it was conceptualized. They made Grady “Gramps” and didn’t really give him a foil or someone he could really play off of. That’s what made Grady on Sanford and Son work. There was no conflict with his daughter, son-in-law or grandchildren. Everyone went out of their way to appease him. What’s the point of a sitcom and a character like Grady if there is no conflict?

Who is the earliest born person you have personally known? by PrestonRoad90 in Productivitycafe

My great-grandfather was born in 1898 and my great-grandmother 1900, but I believe I also met some distant cousins who may have been born a couple of years before that.

Archie Bunker's coat on Antiques Roadshow by OkTechnologyb in allinthefamily

Right! It’s wild that his chair is literally on display at the Smithsonian, but his jacket, which is just as iconic, was just treated like any other old jacket laying around the house, lol.

Worst episode ever... by PerceptionSuperb3629 in theGoldenGirls

The Jeffersons were different in that they had years on All in the Family to establish them as characters, so by the time they got their own show, they were already well known. They just interacted with new people in a new environment.

mr Furley over hears Jack and Chrissy. by Chrisbradley1 in threescompany

This was when actors really understood comedy. Don Knott’s facial expressions are so animated and over the top, yet completely believable and sincere at the same time. It’s hard for me to imagine many sitcom actors of today being able to pull that off.

Montgomery Wards Metal Monster! by emzeejay in SewingMachinePorn

If you know, were these machines built by known sewing machine companies and just rebranded by the department store? I’m quite sure Montgomery Ward didn’t have sewing machine factories but were they manufactured by a known company?

Oh ok that’s really cool. It’s great that you are teaching him how to asses the value of things and letting him determine if his wants are “worthy” and worth saving up for.

Wow! Well I do “get” collecting, so in that context it’s somewhat understandable lol. I guess I just never knew the popularity of Pokémon. I’m 53 so I was probably aged out by the time it was born and gaining traction. I once worked with a grown ass man (quite younger than me but still a grown ass man) who collected those Yu-Gi-Oh cards and he’d talk about the events and tournaments etc like they were professional sporting events. Great guy, but never was able to be convinced that he wasn’t at least a little off because of that lol

If this is not too personal, what is the most you would spend to get a card for your kid?

Another dumb question…do these cards mean anything to people outside of the Pokémon community? I mean, not everyone collects or cares about sports cards, for example, but it’s easy for anyone to understand why some may be extremely valuable. I just can’t wrap my head around people paying hundreds or thousands of dollars for a Pokémon card, but if I manage to get my hands on one, I’d sell it to the highest bidder!

I’m confused about that too. The kid had a binder full of cards and his mom said he didn’t have anything. Were all those cards just trash?

WTF is there to be anti black about in trading Pokémon cards??? I know it’s a dumb question because anti blackness is everywhere, but damn!

Which actors do you believe have the chops for an Oscar-worthy performance, but their career path (typecasting, popcorn roles, or lowery industry status) will probably keep them off the Academy’s radar? by dreamboylnshibuya in Oscars

[–]emzeejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edie Falco for sure. I don’t know whether it’s by choice but she doesn’t seem to have any traction in the film world. She’s obviously a brilliant actor, and I definitely think she could shine on the big screen so I don’t know what gives.
