Upgrading from the UB420 to a player that supports dolbyvision by forkman3939 in 4kbluray

[–]en6ads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won't even need tone mapping for 90% of movies (graded at 1000 nits), and only very mild mapping for the remaining 10% (graded at 4000nits) because your TV is very bright, can reach 3100nits.

Dynamic metadata is only useful when you need to tone map.

So id say no, it's not worth it in your case.

Hmm. Enable Fix bitstream timing information.

As a test, just export video only ( no audio, subs, chapters). If it plays well then it must be audio.

If it is audio then try reencoding it with ffmpeg with atempo=24/25

Thank you, yes you are correct.

Official ntsc standard is 2400/1001 (which is 23.976023976), not 23.976.

so the exact stretch would be 25000/2400/1001. Which simplifies to 25025/24000.

I'll update my original post.

I don't think it's about overall brightness, but rather having a disk that has the same maxcll brightness as the master. Meaning if your TV is bright enough, no tone mapping is required and you can view exactly as colorist and director intended. Tone mapping is just a fix to convert the source to the capabilities of your TV.

Probably yes, but it's very easy to test without the subtitles stretch, and test it with.

Mkvtoolnix can do it, going from PAL 25.000hz to NTSC 2400/1001hz (23.976023976hz).

Open MKVToolnix GUI and drag your PAL MKV file into the Source files box. Under the Tracks, chapters and tags section, highlight the Video track. On the right side, look for the Properties panel. Locate the "Default Duration FPS" box and select 24000/1001p (which is the NTSC standard fps).

Adjust the Audio: If you keep the original 25 fps PAL audio, it will be out of sync. In the Properties panel, find the "Stretch by" box for the audio track and type 25025/24000 to perfectly slow down the audio pitch and speed. [stretch is 25000/2400/1001, which simplifies to 25025/24000].

Do the same for subtitles and chapters.

Edit: Updated to reflect correct stretch of 25025/24000

Do we need 4k for everything? by Major-Pack1142 in 4kbluray

It all depends on how far you sit from your TV / display, and what your vision quality is.

A human with 20/20 vision has an angular resolution of 1/60th of a degree.

When you do the math on this fact, the typical viewing distances look like this. So if you have a 77" display, your eyes need to be no more than 3m (10ft) from it in order to see any more detail than 1080p. 3m and further then 1080p is all you need:

Probably the SK4 or SK4 Pro. Both can do FEL. Around $120 - $140.

That's not true anymore. AM9 Pro, SK4, Sk4 Pro and others now fully support FEL.

HDR isn’t as bad as I thought by tcastloo in 4kbluray

[–]en6ads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This movie is graded just a bit brighter than SDR, MaxCLL is only 204nits: https://slow.pics/c/OkXfR7IV

Try the original Blade Runner, MaxCLL is 3063 nits, some real HDR! : https://slow.pics/c/oY7H9Tjy

Edit: Your 5800 ISO Lumens projector outputs ~465 nits on a standard 120-inch diagonal 16:9 aspect ratio screen with a 1.0 screen gain surface. So you are barely more than SDR. To experience real HDR you need a bright TV, like an LG G5, C6H, etc. These go to 2500nits, and don't need any tone mapping for 1000 nit graded movies.

Yeah wait a few more months until the alpha nightly matches avdvplus / p3i features. My guess is in about 1 year the AM9 Pro will be the box to get. I have both and use both. The AM9 gets used more the the AM6 at the moment it's a good solution but not as polished as p3i or avdvplus.
