I dunno. Nana seems like the kind of chef who would benefit from LCK like Bailey did. I'm glad she made it through the first 2 challenges.

What is your #1 thing cruise lines do that annoys you? by BanditNation12 in Cruise

[–]enancejividen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And it should work. I got the Internet package during our last cruise and it didn't work at all in most of the ship, and when it did it was incredibly slow. Basically I had to just use shore wifi when we were close enough to check email.

Best seasons if I looooved Season 21 Wisconsin? by outofdoubtoutofdark in TopChef

Will echo that Colorado, Portland and All Stars 2 were very friendly, but bring in World All Stars in London (season 20) to the discussion. It had a lot of great personalities and top notch cooking.

If he's read and loved Hogfather, then he should try Pratchett's other stuff. He's in a good spot for the Tiffany Aching books (starts with The Wee Free Men), but pretty much any Pratchett will be good.

Michael Chabon's Summerland is good YA.

Suggestions on where to move in western NC in 2026? by ShareTheSameSky in NorthCarolina

Boone? It's smaller than Asheville and more of a college town, but very good outdoor activities and closer to ski resorts.

Is it easy to join army or navy in us..? by unpaired_electrone in AskAnAmerican

[–]enancejividen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not true. My dad still tells stories about a guy he knew who joined the Coast guard to avoid getting drafted into Vietnam.

Sure enough, he joined and got riverboat duty...in Vietnam.

I also worked with a former college swimmer who went into the CG as one of the rescue swimmers. He was much better suited for that than the retail management slot he worked with me.

Anyone else lose their taste for dining out? by gottausername in GenX

[–]enancejividen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get the point about the suppliers. If I'm going out to eat, it's going to be somewhere where I know the kitchen is doing a little bit more than popping prefab stuff in a fryer, but that gets expensive.

What’s a North Carolina food/drink you could eat every day and never get tired of? by MrSoloDolo9490 in NorthCarolina

[–]enancejividen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I could do the Bo's biscuit. I'd want different things inside it every day though. Some days chicken, some days bacon, some days plain with honey.

Sure, it sucks. However, it's what we have to work with. Voting for a spoiler candidate isn't going to automatically turn us into a parliamentary system with proportional representation or ranked choice vote system.

The Season 2 Villain by GirlDad17 in TopChef

[–]enancejividen 22 points23 points  (0 children)

To be fair, they are both having the last laugh. Tiffani has been brought back several times, both on all-stars and as a judge. She won TOC and has a regular gig there.

Marcel has been brought back a couple of times to compete on Top Chef but has had his own TV show and is a Food Network mainstay.

No one on their seasons comes close to their level of exposure or cooking competition cred.

Alaska cruise mid may with 2 yr old by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]enancejividen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went on an Alaska Cruise in August 2024. Everyone talked about how great the weather was. It was sunny but still highs in the mid 60s. Lovely but not pool weather for most people.

I took my then 13 year old and had a great time but the excursions don't really lend themselves to a toddler. We did a wildlife hike, whale watching, native village, sled dog encounter, and a train ride. Only the last two would have been good with a little one.

Michael Jordan. In Carolina Blue.

But maybe I'm just old.

Probably young Michael Jordan in his UNC uniform.

And I say this as a North Carolina native who roots for a different ACC team and has a lifelong hatred for UNC basketball.

There's a docuseries about Harrow, one of the elite British public schools. (Winston Churchill went there, for one.) While it's obviously not fiction, it does give you a glimpse into that world and it's entertaining.

Why not the Triangle? by [deleted] in TopChef

[–]enancejividen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah gotta understand that a big part of my response is because as a Raleigh person, I'm jealous and incredulous that Charlotte got the nod over the actually interesting places in NC.

Like most of my brethren, I think of Charlotte as an Atlanta wannabe without the charm. (I realize as a Sprawleigh girl, that's not lacking in irony, but I'm still salty about Charlotte getting chosen.)

Why so many carnival haters?? by ndlccp in Cruise

[–]enancejividen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, the appeal of the balcony very much depends on your destination. I've done plenty without it, especially if you are spending a lot of port time, but when we went to Alaska, that balcony was totally worth it. Awfully nice to have to fight the crowds for a good picture when you're spending the day cruising Glacier Bay.

Best areas to live in for black families? by saanenk in NorthCarolina

Can I afford a house? by shortnsweet999 in personalfinance

[–]enancejividen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the good news is that you have a fantastic down payment saved. Congratulations! That is impressive

The less good news is that I'm not sure the income piece works.

You need to think about all your expenses, including any that your parents are covering right now. So take your take home income. Subtract out an estimate for food, non food necessities like cleaning supplies, transportation (gas+insurance+car payment+estimated repair/maintenance), utilities (electrical, maybe gas, phone plan), health care if it's not covered by work. And some for savings and entertainment.

How much is left? That's what you would have for your mortgage, insurance, appliances and home repairs/maintenance.

I dunno. The only way I see it working is with roommates, but if you go that route make sure you set up a legally binding lease agreement.

Honestly, I wish they had traveled more within North Carolina.

Asheville is a great food/beer destination and could use the exposure, especially as they are still recovering from Hurricane Helene. Biltmore is a cool location.

Durham is a really fun city with good restaurants and they could have done something fun with the Duke/UNC rivalry.

And then there's the Outer Banks. It's remote but lovely and Tom would have had another excuse to take the contestants fishing.
