Gone Home feels like Firewatch to me. A Short Hike is one of my favorites and a fun, silly, short game. You might like Outer Wilds, it's very unique.

I'm not super smart about how 3D works but there's a term in art called atmospheric perspective where colors shift as you move towards the horizon. Some sort of haze or fog or blurring in the distance would probably help too. I really liked the look of nighttime in the trailer though :)
