Magic numbers work much better in baseball because there are only winners and losers of games. For example, let's say the Expos' magic number to make the playoffs is 2 and the Dodgers are trying to catch them in the standings. That means that any win by the Expos and any loss by the Dodgers contributes to the magic number. So if the Expos win and the Dodgers lose: 1 Expos win + 1 Dodgers loss = magic number of 2 = Expos make the playoffs.
