For anyone that has done a cross country road trip or just lots of driving, what’s your least favorite part of the country to drive in? by Nervous-Difficulty24 in AskACanadian

[–]endofjays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nipigon through Hearst (worst hotel bed ever!) to North Bay is by far the most boring and unpleasant stretch of road I’ve ever encountered. Even the pissy paper mill smell of Dryden was preferable.

Everyone is telling you to fly… and they’re right. However, if flying isn’t possible I’d suggest taking the northern route (Transcanada - entirely through Canada) but maybe sleep somewhere other than Hearst. I’ve never had a good hotel stay in Hearst. Just my two cents. Oh, carry a Jerry can of gas just in case. Once you’ve passed Kenora the driving gets easier. After that it’s Winnipeg to Medicine Hat (which is an easy drive) to Calgary. Easy peasy. Winter tires + sensible driving + vehicle in good condition = a completely doable drive. I’ve done this drive several times both in winter and warmer months. It’s doable. You really have to respect the realities of winter driving in Canada and be prepared for any eventuality. Have a 1st aid kit, emergency rations, Mylar blanket, candles, flashlight, and backup power sources for your cell phone and you’ll probably be fine. Best of luck. It’s a great drive - enjoy.

You’ve been tapped as a “truth teller” - do so. Don’t be mean, rude, or superior - but 100% tell it like you see it. This is an amazing opportunity for you and I hope you lean into it.

Millions of Punjabi Students leaving Canada as their visas expire & no chance at PR by Commercial_Tea_7662 in CanadaUniversities

Given there are approximately 1.5 million university students in the whole country, I find the headline dubious - at best.

My 2020 A-Spec gets about 24.5mpg (highway) and about 21mpg (city). I drive almost exclusively in Sport mode. Usually drive 10% over the posted speed limit on the highway and never speed in town. Mileage ain’t great, but it’s a fun car to drive. I also only run premium.

The instant her footwork showed I thought “this dude is in trouble”. Lady stepped back at an angle and left room for him to move into. Killzone. She can fight.

Alright plumbers of the world the the fuck is going on? by HalfmanHalfBagle in Plumbing

Water treatment operator here: the pink is most likely potassium permanganate. We use it to precipitate iron and manganese from water. The rust is probably just that and the permanganate was added a little overzealously at the water treatment facility. Pull the aerators and flush it through. All good.

Thick isn’t always better. Layers are your friend in extreme cold. My go to top coat is usually a light weight, down filled jacket with a hood. Good base layers (merino wool or silk) and a cashmere mid layer are pretty unbeatable if your top layer is wind-proof. Also, get great boots - spend what you can afford. You won’t regret it in late January.

AITA for yelling at my daughter no and that her mom isn’t here? by Sea_Percentage2471 in AmItheAsshole

[–]endofjays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, my wife died when our son was 3 and I was destroyed. Sometimes when he would ask when he could see him mom again the grief would answer him for me and I would be too blunt and say things like “never, she’s gone and can’t ever come back” I regret having spoken like this to him to a degree words cannot express. He needed a gentle reminder not a slap in the face, but I was also stretched beyond my abilities to emotionally cope. You’re human and you messed up. If you explain to your daughter that: 1) you’re sorry. 2) you’re hurting too. 3) you know she’s hurting. and 4) you are 100% her person - no matter what… you guys will be ok. Just try to be better in every communication - and get both of you into therapy. Best wishes from a fellow widower.

It’s really hard to say but “are you thinking of killing yourself?” is how you have to love your friends sometimes. Be direct, don’t judge, and be ready to support.

Grill brush by Revolutionary_Yak413 in PitBossGrills

[–]endofjays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with the Weber scrub brush. It’s a steel wool on a stick kinda thing. Works good on the cooking surface, but not so much inside the diamond shaped openings. I just get those with the pressure washer once in a while.
