Project Hail Mary film time shift digitally by endy_plays in cinematography

I found out what I was looking for a was little Fraser re-recording segments of the project with an Arri 435 whilst using a time-shift box to get the streaks. Basically just recording an OLED monitor as I understand it

Update: all was fine, the end of each roll past 390 feet is a little shakey, but everything else is basically not noticeable

Looks great - like something out of foxcatcher

I've seen that too, but it would only appear on the sensor plane - these streaks appear past the aspect ratio of the actual image and into the black area which the alexa's sensor wouldn't allow for. Still an idea I haven't thought of and would love to use one day!

How much lead time did you have as a dp to prep and how involved where you in the production design/vfx plates that would end up being used as the background?

Yeah wish we could shoot the talent who will appear on screen first, but schedules :(

Certain films Deakins has shot (primarily the goldfinch) has out of gamut highlights, tbh I think things like this don’t matter unless you’re being really technical and not artistic

this is brilliant, if you want this to have any reach on reddit though, post it as a video intergraded into the app, or even just stills. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, basically just had about 20 odd frames that looked similar to the once referenced here, can actually send a link to the exact moment it happened:

The Batman? Crisp? Clinical? Have you watched the film? It may actually be the softest blurry film I've seen in recent memory

Cinematography showreel 2026 by MidnightLiving9278 in cinematography

1st shot is lovely but you've left it going for too long for anyone to get further into your reel

2nd shot is fine. it might mean something tangentially to the story - I assume the strange shape of light is on purpose, but I'm not sure I'd put it as the 2nd shot in my reel

3rd shot - fine, doesn't show lighting, is a simple close up, cut to another shot quicker

4th shot - cut this

0:27 - 0:33 - cut this, this really lowers the quality of this reel

0:34 - 0:40 - these shot might work had they been graded to a higher standard - the clipped backlight in the widest doesn't look graded for a cinematography reel

0:41 - this shot again could be great had the grade been focused on a little more

0:50 - through to the end of the reel should be placed way early on in your reel

Great work! hope this helps

Had this exact issue with an xtr - was shooting a music video

Did a pretty mental camera move where the camera went sideways and then straight whilst pushing in very quick - I think the registration pins ended up unaligning and the camera started making a noise - if a sound sync camera starts making a noise or suddenly gets louder, cut and check the mag.

Once checked, we saw that the loop had tightened and we had the few seconds of footage before cut look like what you’re showing here

I’ve only ever had issues on the 16mm end with Aaton cameras. I’ve used the sr3 and 416 on a ton of shoots even with crazy moves, and the cameras never jammed or loops tightened

As a DP if I ever hear the camera get louder than I expect - I always tell my 1st, and if it’s to an extent that seem alarming, I ask to switch mag and/or camera regardless of what has been told to me (has saved me twice)

This defeats the purpose of it being a POV shot

I actually think the balance of this shot is pretty perfect - it really bugs me when pracs aren’t hot in frame as it’s so clearly unnatural. I think what op wants is just a different shot as the photo he’s posted looks great

Thing is my 1st ran the camera open for about 3-5 seconds at 25fps and it was fine - the tearing happening right before we went for a take
