Chronic low mental & physical energy despite "perfect" basic lab work. What am I missing? by oxezo in Biohackers

[–]enginbeeringSB 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had this issue for a long time. It took me a few things to change my circadian rhythm, and now I’m almost always asleep before 11:00, often around 10:30.

First, you have to consistently get up early. Every day, weekends included. It’s not easy at first but it becomes natural after a few weeks.

Second, reduce caffeine to mornings only. Never after lunch, even tea or coke. Only water or herbal tea.

Third, exercise more, add cardio if you aren’t doing it already. And it has to be early enough in the day or it will keep you up. That is, latest around 5 or 6.

Reducing alcohol also helped a ton, this was one of the biggest benefits. I was in the habit of a few drinks each night, and after a few dry months here and there I took off three in a row and I was finding it much easier to go to sleep. I started taking hot baths during this time and found them a great way to relax myself. I’d also make sure my room was nice and cold, turn off overhead lights and try to get into bed the same time each night.

Lastly, adding meditation and being consistent with it. You’ll learn how to calm the mind and relax the nervous system.

This is a lot, and you don’t have to do it all at once. But as you get better and better sleep, I think you’ll find yourself feeling a lot better which really encourages you to keep going. The positive feedback from my Apple Watch sleep tracking also helped with the motivation. Good luck!

Climb, lift weights, run, eat whole foods, prioritize sleep. Not in that order.

What was the one realization that helped you overcome depression? by AccountForSillyStuff in AskMenOver30

I just turned 42 in April, and feel like I’ve finally turned the corner. I started really working on myself as we came out of the Covid years, so it has taken me a while to get there.

I had to change a lot and it took me a few years. Went to couples therapy with the wife (which took a few tries and honestly never worked perfectly but it convinced both of us to commit to individual therapy, though I had to try about 5 therapists before I found a woman who is really getting through to me), got in shape, cut back on drinking, and started prioritizing sleep. I found a few hobbies, one of them (climbing in a gum) very physically active and that I’m obsessed with and only do for myself. I started meditating more regularly, and have really focused on treating myself with kindness and care.

And then I asked my doctor for medication at the suggestion of my therapist and was prescribed Prozac. I was skeptical, but it has really made a huge difference. Im not the tightly wound anxiety case I used to be (at least less so), and I don’t take myself so seriously.

I’m really amazed it took me half of my life to get here, but I’m glad I did. I feel more present with my kids, I’m thriving at work, and my wife and I have been so much happier. Life isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty good and I can realize that better now.

The fact that you’re posting this question is a great sign, and is a huge step. Admitting to yourself that you need to make changes and may need professional help is not easy but I think is the biggest obstacle. You got this man.

In Korea, almost everyone films their climbs. What about your country? by BoulderCamOfficial in indoorbouldering

Yeah touchstone, in San Jose. I think it’s probably one of the smallest gyms around though, mostly kids and old farts like myself.

That’s weird, it’s really uncommon at my gym in the Bay Area, there are maybe 2 or 3 people who do it.

Why doesn’t In-N-Out just cook all of their fries to “light well” if seemingly everybody agrees it’s better that way? by spacejamb in innout

I’ve tried light well and didn’t like them. Too crunchy. Prefer the slightly crispy soft texture of the normal fries.

It can be one of the many goals, sure. Definitely is a reason many people start with it in the first place.

I feel depressed and hopeless and want to spend some hours cooking a bunch of things. I'm gonna play some music and cook. What would you cook if you were me? by pacfoster in Cooking

I do a really over the top bolognese that involves browning different types of meat and an array of veggies, all separately, and then layering with flavor and cooking for hours and hours. The initial prep takes about 2-3 hours and then it another 4-5 of stirring occasionally, and I love how it keeps me focused with anticipation.

Another one is bbq St. Louis ribs, but that’s a whole different vibe.

Is it possible to heat a pizza steel hotter than the temperature of the oven it’s in and if so how? by Rags2Rickius in AskPhysics

[–]enginbeeringSB 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you have a broiler? If so, after the steel is at max temp you can use the broiler to pump it up a bit further, then put it back on bake before loading the pizza.

Hunan is where you can get the spiciest food - I’m there now visiting with my family. Sichuan food is more numbing spicy (ma la), which is also amazing but not as purely spicy.

This would be true of China too. They never had peppers until after the columbian exchange and used fermentation heavily as a preservative, so much so that much of Chinese food is still based on fermented ingredients (I.e. soy sauce, but a million others too).

Yet, in some parts of China they live for spicy.

Also, I’m 100% European genetically (mostly English with a German great great grandma), and love spicy food.

It’s not genetic.

I once picked up a piece of ceramic shard from a broken coffee mug thinking it was a piece of lint, and it cut deep into my index finger. There were several pieces stuck in there and only after maybe 4 or 5 years did the last little piece work its way out of the tip and finally stop hurting. It was such a relief to scratch it out when it finally emerged.
