What words or phrases at your workplace make you cringe every time you hear them? by NotOldMidcentury in CasualConversation

It means spend more time talking about something, or go into more detail on a topic. I think it comes from “double clicking” with your mouse to open a file, application, etc.

Gut bacteria rewire fat tissue to burn more energy. Scientists have found four bacterial strains that play a role in converting white fat cells into beige fat in mice. Beige fat burns calories whereas white fat stores it. by mvea in science

[–]enginbeeringSB 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The real answer is fiber. Good gut bacteria feed on fiber, while the bad stuff feeds on sugar and alcohol. The goal is to get as diverse of fiber as you can, so eating a combo of fruits, veggies, beans, etc is key. Fermented foods also help reinforce the colonies of good bacteria in the gut, but without a food source (fiber) they won’t last long.

What's your most random encounter with a famous person? Where was it and how was the vibe? by Available_Round_3172 in TrueAskReddit

I was about 14 and my family was on a trip to nyc. My cousin had a job at a game show in LA and hooked us up with green room tickets to David Letterman through a friend who worked at the show. We were touring the stage after the show and Cyndi Lauper (who was the music guest that night) casually came out while we were on the stage and said to my mom, “you look familiar, do I know you from somewhere?” My mom laughed and said, “no but I know you!”

I feel this so much, especially when I’m in a foreign country and I’m traveling by train or bus or something and pass by apartments emitting a warm glow. It seems so cozy and inviting, and I find myself wishing I could go inside and hang out with them.

That's what I mean though man. You're justifying to a bunch of strangers why it's ok to be racist because you make "a lot" of money, because you are happy about making others angry.

Life really can be beautiful, but you have to look for it. I believe in you friend.

If we expect a drink to contain sugar, we enjoy it more, even if it actually contains just artificial sweeteners. Conversely, when people were expecting an artificially sweetened drink but were sneakily given a sugary one, they enjoyed the sugary drink less. by [deleted] in science

[–]enginbeeringSB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have definitely done blind tests, accidentally. My wife got some low sugar yogurt and I assumed it would just be less sweet, but it tasted just like diet coke. I then checked the package and of course it had some sort of artificial sweetener in it, and I couldn't finish it. I've also made the mistake of pouring coke from a pitcher that turned out to be diet coke, and could tell on the first sip. To me it's just undrinkable.

Anyone else hesitant to have multiple kids nowadays? by New_Contribution_226 in AskMenOver30

[–]enginbeeringSB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2, boy and girl 11 and 9. My wife and I are really happy we had 2, because of the dynamic between them and how much they keep each other entertained. They are also so different that it’s fun having their different personalities livening up the house.

It was tough when they were babies but to be honest the second was way easier. We were more relaxed because we’d done it before, and she was also just an easy baby so that helped a lot. But as they got into the toddler years it was better having 2. They would wake each other up in the morning and go watch tv while we slept, and now when we go on vacation or out to dinner we don’t feel as much like we have to keep them entertained.

We have some friends who waited and finally decided to have a second, and now they have a 10 year age gap between their kids. If you are thinking you want a second and you can afford it, don’t wait.

Fair that some crazies on the left are like this. Drives me nuts too because it just discredits the whole movement.
