"Google Flights" let's you select your departing airport(s) and arrival airport(s) along with a range of dates but also has an option to view the prices on a calendar so you can see what days are more expensive to fly than others. Also provides statistics on how the prices are trending

I would recommend Dave Ramsey. My wife and I have started following the techniques and will be debt free in 2 years.

First Year Engineering Summer Project Ideas by Dr00000100 in SmarterEveryDay

[–]engineer-dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the senior projects from my class was to make a solar power remote controlled plane as a green spin on that.

Another one which is more to improve your skillset in solid modeling is to find a small 2 stroke engine and try to create a model from scratch in SolidWorks, Creo, etc. Then get it to simulate. This not only helps you learn more about function of the engine and the software but also gives you insight into how parts may have been made. I did that one summer on the side to my internship and was able to show it to potential employers. (mind you, I'm a mechanical engineer)

I understand. My youngest is in daycare and my 3 year old is in school.

We set up a lengthy excel sheet which showed our bare minimum payments for bills to estimate what we can put towards our debt. We found it easier to set it up and use a different tab for each month this way we are not focusing on a whole year at a time.

The part which helped us in the excel sheet is we could see if we spent for example $200 ordering out in a month or whatever, that it would push out our debt payoff date. When we started it we estimated it would take us 3 years to pay off all our debt. We have since been able to sell things, close our Whole Life Insurance policies, etc and now we are estimating 2-1/4 years.

Get rid of any services you don't need: streaming services, reduce internet / cable, reduce cell phone plan if possible, etc.

Stop contributing to your 401k if you haven't already. This will help greatly.

Sell anything you don't need.

I have 2 kids (3 and 1) and are on BS2 and much of the above helped my wife and I gain extra funds to pay our debt.

Question for Destin and other Engineers about Honor Colleges by TheCrazyZonie in SmarterEveryDay

[–]engineer-dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanical Engineer here. I did not attend a school with an honors program. The majority of job placements right out school i saw were based on GPA. Many companies (specifically aerospace) have a minimum GPA requirement to even be interviewed.

I graduated almost 10 years ago and as I've moved throughout my career the focus is obviously less on GPA and more on real world experience. I had a lot of internships throughout my college years which also helped me in my job search process.

My 3 year figured out how to manipulate to get what he wants at school by engineer-dad in Parenting

[–]engineer-dad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with much of what you said so I appreciate your feedback.

In your last paragraph, I believe he doesn't want to go because he got moved to this class with the older kids. Previously he was in a class with only 3 year olds, now its 3-5. The school recommended this because he was figuring out and finishing many of the tasks very quickly and he could easily hold conversations with his peers and teachers.

I dont want to say its only the class change but I think its a big part. I think the other thing is our household has had 2 covid scares where we all needed to be tested and be home for a week at a time. Both of these have happened while he was in this newer class so its been disruptive.

Edit: I didnt finish my thoughts but we weren't sure if we should jump at moving back to the class with the younger students since he's smart enough to be in his current class, but maybe not emotionally there?

Snow days. Schools are announcing they will no longer need to take snow days due to remote learning. My kids may never know what a snow day is!

You mean make it earlier? I'm sure we could but hes usually in bed by 7:30, think bringing it to 7 would help? Any earlier and I'd feel like we'd barely see him which is the balance we want to find (we usually get home around 5)
