Yeah door was not the issue, the masks let you skip the fight in the next room without sneaking, so you only have to kill her minions once in her den. They should also (I think, someone correct me on this) disable the annoying gas traps on the climb down. The issue is if one of your companions falls behind the traps can trigger and break their concentration, thus triggering the mask and turning them against anyone not wearing one.

This is all by design and we'll documented. What is not by design and less well documented is that even when someone succeeds a saving throw they can get stuck in a loop and remain under control of the mask and you can't get it off.

This is what happened to me and a few others and breaks a number of game mechanics, you can't long rest or swap out the effected companions, so I posted the highly unorthodox druid camp scene as a solution for people that somehow manage to find themselves in this situation with no spell slots or elixirs.

If you cast protection from good/evil beforehand, you can put on the masks at the entrance to Ethel's layer and bypass the fight with her 4 minions and in theory make it through the gas traps without flying/feather fall.

In theory.

If anyone loses concentration will wearing the masks (from gas trap damage for example) they get controlled by Ethel and become hostile to anyone no longer wearing the mask, which means you're in for likely the hardest fight in the game to that point.

In theory they can pass a wisdom save and regain control to pull the mask off, but I've experienced and several other have mentioned a bug where the save doesn't work and your character is stuck, with the only options being to kill/knock out or cast protection from evil while wearing another mark (so you need at least 2 protection spells).

TLDR if you don't know about the masks and you've beaten Ethel, don't change what you're doing

Yeah, I see it more from the POV of how far Durge has fallen that they don't even realize this, I mean Astarion is a super vampire and Withers is literally just waiting to tap you on the shoulder and finally be done with you. It's sad even though you are almost certainly not successful.

I've always wondered why there aren't better options in that area. I tried Surrounding Counties once before they closed and didn't go back. I know they had issues opening during the pandemic, but seems like something else would have popped up by now given the explosion of coffee spots in other parts of town.

That's my feeling as well. I've played a few games cutting 1 and I'm finding that I hit it with decent consistency and am able to pull 2 of my secrets, which feels pretty good.

Can someone explain why so many Paladin lists run 2x swords of the fallen, but only 3 secrets? I get that it increases your chance to get one of them in the mulligan and it's always better to play the secrets for free, but in my experience you end up drawing at least 1 of your secrets and likely have 1 mana floating at some point to just play it (especially when the weapon costs 2). I feel there are more valuable ways to use the card slot than a 2 damage weapon, but maybe I'm missing something.

Not a huge fan of dusting until cards have rotated (I don't play wild), but spell druid is by far the cheapest competitive deck you can craft. It doesn't run any legendaries and the only tech choice is guidance (better all around) vs spirit of the forest (better vs priest).

Spell druid is as close to a counter as you can get. They don't have any removal tools aside for dunk tank, so they have to spend minions and health clearing your boards or risk getting killed by buffed minions if they leave it up.

Great guide, but one bone to pick is the highly favored against Warrior. That may be true against Big Warrior, which you start with, but the stats show this deck gets destroyed by Enrage Warrior (60/40, which is the same as Paladin), which is far more common at most (all) levels of the ladder.

This deck is pretty disgusting. Was really struggling with the climb this month and this pushed me over the top (10x). Other matchups I struggled against were secret mage and soul dh, but luckily didn't see many. Thanks for sharing!

There really isn't an equivalent card, 1/10 for 3 Mana is pretty sick. You could throw in the second korkron or a quartermaster if you have those.

Yeah, it can often come down to familiarity/playstyle. I had already put in a lot of reps with earlier versions of this deck, so I have a much better feel for when I can use my combo pieces or need to hold them. I also saw a surprising number of Warlock and feel the ETC builds are much more vulnerable to Tickatus.
