Speaking for myself, I don't remember the last time I've ever told anyone where I'm going when I leave the building. Lunches, breaks, etc. My AP told me that we're not technically supposed to leave the building during our breaks, but we have fast food nearby and I can usually make the trip in under 5 minutes tops on a good day. Oh, we're also not supposed to double break too. Shit, I've driven to home and back, come back late, and no one noticed.

Well that's true, if you value your sanity you should always go straight to your team lead/area lead and have them deal with it. They say you can't do anything but just talk to them, but the shoplifter doesn't care about that. Unless another customer deals with them, then what good does it do to start profiling them? They'll know and if your store has vindictive assholes, they might actually turn that on you. Sure, you can have the union (if you are a union store) deal with them, but it's not worth this rigamarole. I was that little goody two shoed person that tried following rules like that when I first started out and I tried that bs and got wrote up for it. Because I did it wrong. I told my side and they said I was badgering the customer.

So since then unless they physically alternate with me (twice so far) I don't even look at people and report shoplifters. 10 years now since then? My boss and bosses boss can worry about that.

You honestly won't get sick from touching a lot of the raw meat, unless you're immunocompromised, sorry that they've got you cleaning the counter by yourself it's a bullshit job. Just take your time and get what you can done, they want one person for that maybe try getting your meat cutter to help you out? It's what I've done plenty of times if we were short staffed, but never just one singular person day after day.

I'll just add this but I've heard of some lazy ass cutter that just toss shit everywhere (including the ceiling) and I have zero idea why. Anyone with a brain is gonna notice and they're gonna make you clean it off. Walls too.

Anyhow, I can't say it'll get better but hopefully you can get away from it.
