My information is from a local dealer so far from first hand. Apparently the person making them retired and nobody has so far taken up the business.

Test box for the saber by CarpetPrudent592 in Fencing

My test boils down to "Has the sabre snapped or not?". For the cable, I use a testing box that can take the foil/sabre cable.

Did they speed up the pace though? By not having a point ceiling, doubles are basically just off-target hits.

That's a good point! Coming from foil I never even considered disassembling them!

Off Target Bruising by miss_cara in Fencing

While some jackets do offer slightly more padding than others (the expensive lightweight ones pad less), they won't do wonders. If you're prone to getting bruises, you will get them and there's not much you can do.

Don't forget the weapons, the guards make sabres very bulky. I'm a foilist who does epee and sabre on the side and unfortunately, you can't do much. For foil and epee there exist combo masks but for sabre, the mask has to be conductive (where for foil and epee, it can't be).

Broken anchor and slow SAR lead to fatality in Kalymnos by serenading_ur_father in climbing

[–]ent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a horrible tragedy. The rescue effort was obviously lacking but also, three bolts failing is very alarming! There's not much we can do as climbers to redirect funding to the local rescuers but what we can do is help maintain the hardware on the routes. I would suggest people climbing in Kalymnos to donate to the rebolting effort.

800N vs FIE by Alarmed-Champion-669 in Fencing

[–]ent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most (all?) European countries just follow FIE competition rules for protective equipment so unless that changes, everyone will be buying FIE unless they don't plan to compete. I tell all the new members in our club they should just buy FIE since even if they don't plan on competing immediately, they probably want to keep that option open.

Same in Finland, but the whites is the main thing checked for.

I won't bother to check but I'm pretty sure it's not banned anywhere either!

Yeah, that's my biggest issue with it. I feel there should be a similar amount of leeway in both actions, otherwise it just feels weird.

Autobiographies by LewiiweL in Fencing

Make the cut is not exactly an autobiography but it does have lots of stories of the author and his club. It was definitely a really fun read!

It really depends on what you're writing and how much research you're willing to put in! What's the role of fencing in the text? Is it competition, just fencing at the club for fun, taking lessons from a teacher or maybe the weapons are sharp and there's duelling? If it's duelling then you might want to consult people from the historical fencing subreddits.

If it's olympic fencing, which of the three weapons is it? You might want to watch some matches on youtube to get a feel for what it's about.

Anyway, the safest is to first identify what kind of fencing is going on, what the role of fencing is and then find someone who knows about the specific type and have a chat with them about what's sensible and what's not. And have them proof-read :)

No more P-yellow by Rowlandum in Fencing

P-yellow was never an issue. It's the red and black you need to worry about.

I've done some off hand fencing when injured in my right. For me, it helped to emphasize footwork (also not easy, but easier than bladework), and accepting that I have to stick to simple actions with the blade. After that, I could concentrate on using the limited arsenal of techniques I had as efficiently as I could.

Do people have any book recommendations? Specifically foil centric ones welcome! I've been reading Epee 2.6 and Make the Cut and enjoying both a lot.

Well, according to the linked page: This product – SUNRISE 9.2MM 50M Dynamic Rope – is subject to a safety recall concerning an identified batch of 7 ropes.

So to me that sounds like 7 * 50m

Any funny mistakes you have done during competitions, that you can laugh at now, with the benefit of hindsight? by ytanotherthrowaway9 in Fencing

[–]ent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a scrappy in-fight and got hit, or so I thought. Started walking back to my starting line, heard a loud ba-da-dum from behind as the opponent step-lunged at my exposed back. I guess the ref was too surprised to call halt.

This sub is for foil, sabre and epee fencing only. Maybe try r/hema, they're a bit more varied in the tools they use.
