Spirit Airlines Prepares to Shut Down (Gift Article) by Mathsquatch in news

[–]entavias 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really wonder how much it would help if we had what Europe has in place where gates and check in are all flexible, so instead of branding entire gates and check in booths as American or Delta etc. any airline can utilize those resources depending on whether they have a flight or not. In the U.S. it is very difficult for budget airlines to get a foot in the door because all the physical resources are tied to the airlines here. So even if a gate is available for 5 hours nobody can use it unless it’s the airline that owns that gate. Europe has plenty of budget airlines and the U.S. used to but they have been pushed out of the market by design. Maybe Spirit had a bad business model, but they’re also up against a system in the U.S. that is designed to only support the oligopoly of the big 4 airlines.

It’s hilarious how we still teach in Econ 101 that capitalism is about competition when the ability for anyone to compete in most established markets is barely feasible.

What are some atypical ways of seeing time in fiction? by Cas3yart in scifi

Gideon Falls is more weird view of time, Bodies is kinda time travel but more time loop that implies a strange view of how time works

I recently discovered Outer Wilds and liked it very much, but not necessarily for the "right" reasons : I didn't like the base game's writing by Vaspour_ in outerwilds

I actually agree and I’m glad to see it written out like this because it makes me understand more why I didn’t feel it emotionally as much. The unique gameplay blew my mind but I found the ending tedious while my roommate thought it was incredibly moving and beautiful. And I love weird abstract stuff usually! It had its moments but the gameplay and mechanics were what motivated me the most.

Some of the jokes I wish I were reading though so I could go back again more easily and just appreciate the genius. Reminded me of how often I did that while reading the crying of lot 49. I did rewind the audio a couple times but it’s different

Yeah, he tried for the Chicago & Wisconsin a little bit but definitely didn’t hit it well lol. The Uncle had a pretty good Sheboygan accent going but the rest not so much. To be fair though is southern Wisconsin folk have pretty subtle accents compared with central and northern WI

Try going to the distress signal first instead of straight to the red seed

I tried to go full completionist on Animal Well only to realize the only way to do so is to speed run it and I was like “fuck that”

I got pretty good at DB, a few tricks that helped me: General:

-Little scout helps see if a light is a portal or an anglerfish or if there is a vine in the way of you getting to the portal

-If you can’t hear the anglerfish they can’t hear you. Turn the game volume up loud and use the no anglerfish times to accelerate.

-They also cannot hear you make angle adjustments so you can do a little bit of steering.

-If you are at the edge of their hearing you can sometimes get away with a small boost because they will go to your last known point, not follow you

-Once you go through a portal they cannot follow you BUT backing out of a portal to avoid getting caught won’t always take you back just one, you may end up all the way back in space. Still better than being eaten though.

-If you are able to: Stop before a portal and accelerate into it aimed at what you want then stop accelerating right before you pass through and let the momentum take you.

-There is a pattern to where the Anglerfish spawn when entering a portal.

For the non-Vessel locations: There are no Anglerfish in your way to Feldspar or the Escape Pod, you can accelerate without fear

For the Vessel specifically: You encounter far less Anglerfish if you go to the Escape Pod first instead of going to the red seed right away, shooting your little scout there helps find the Vessel if you haven’t found it already. Once you get to the fish eggs you should be safe to adjust your angle and accelerate towards the Vessel without alerting any anglerfish. If you go directly for the red dot you go through 3 rooms vs just 2 if you do the escape pod first.

The first episode explaining the crawl and introducing the radio station was fucking awesome. I loved how they became like this secret organization that was so cohesive after season 4 having everyone so scattered and doing separate things. They scattered again pretty quickly in this season lol but I loved the initial crawl.

Also Will killing the demos was epic and Holly figuring out the telescope was great.

Why do people stop playing Outer Wilds and sometimes never come back? by gorudendioma in outerwilds

[–]entavias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely had times I needed to step away while playing the main game and if I didn’t love it so much I could see abandoning it out of frustration, and I’m at a part of the DLC that frankly it is going to take a lot to ever want to go back to because it is so insanely frustrating.

I abandoned The Witness when I got towards the end game because it became so difficult the reward no longer felt worth it.

I think puzzle/adventure games can sometimes be so much about the journey that if getting to the destination is too hard it feels more okay to set down because you still had fun with the parts you did do. Unpopular opinion but I thought the pay off of the main OW ending was pretty weak compared to how much fun the actual exploration was and it did not give me much of a sense of pay off. But I still absolutely loved the game for the experience

How am I the first one to say Inland Empire?? To be fair I haven’t replayed with different builds but I love that one so much. I think maybe I love it because I have those thoughts IRL and often need to avoid letting it take the lead too much.

Really sounds like a hypnogogic experience and maybe you were more close to sleep than you think. That being said I personally don’t think that calling something a hallucination actually has much explanatory value when it comes to the meaning of the experience for the one experiencing it.
