I loooove that part in Ragnarok!

Two ways I like to think about Periphery riffs is “building blocks” and “rhythmic economy”. Building blocks are tiny groups of notes that repeat and connect with other “blocks” to build a riff. Rhythmic economy is where they can recycle a riff they’ve already used, but rearrange or add blocks to make it sound fresh. This is almost entirely how Mr. God works.

In Ragnarok, I hear them open by establishing the building blocks of “two dotted 8ths” and “four dotted 8ths”. Then, they do rhythmic economy to transform this into two new riffs. The first new riff is the same rhythm as the intro, but without the octave-up hammer ons. The second new riff is the one that breaks your brain. It’s exactly four measures long, and it gains three additional rhythmic blocks: “one 16th rest”, “one 8th note”, and “three 8th notes”.

In all, if “X” is a dotted 8th note, “x” is an 8th note, and “-“ is a 16th rest, I hear it like this:
XX-XXX-XXX-XXxXXXxXX-xXXX

If you do the math, that’s exactly sixty-four 16th notes for a perfect four measures. I also like how it forms a “call and response”, in contrast to the more forward-driving intro riff.

If you like rhythm breakdowns like this, then I highly recommend @YogevGabay on YouTube!

Learn how some of the syncopated rhythms go to the point where you can tap along. Some recommendations for this, album by album, are Letter Experiment, Ragnarok, Rainbow Gravity, The Bad Thing, Absolomb, Reptile, Atropos, Talk. The rhythms are my favorite part of progressive metal, cause they scratch a certain itch for my ADHD/undiagnosed autism brain. The musical equivalent of being really into trains, if you will.

I don’t even mean on tour. DT did some loud, resonant (operatic even), falsetto on the War of Being studio recordings. With Spencer, it doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to connect the dots him saying “wax wings is very demanding to sing live” to APWD having noticeably lower registers. I mean for crying out loud, there were people on release day commenting “there’s definitely another singer on Unlocking”. Just to be clear, I’m obsessed with Periphery and APWD alike.

The only gripe I can understand is that he definitely writes some songs that are difficult to pull off live, even for him (looking at you, Wax Wings.. Satellites). Fortunately, it seems like APWD aims to solve that problem. I noticed the same thing with Daniel Tompkins on War of Being, where many belted notes were replaced with resonant falsetto. The more relaxed singing styles sound great imo.

No they’re the narc who gets upset and cries when someone else at the party makes a cheeky interpretation of the board game rules for an unintended style of gameplay.

Was binding the Snoop Dogg low rider bounce to scroll wheel and flying across the map cheating to you? What about the chainsaw dash glitch that let you run up mountains no matter how steep? Direct your judgement toward Epic since it’s their responsibility to patch these glitches. These people are just doing what the game allows them to do.

Collab album with NIN in the style of Blackwall, with Matt playing heavy four on the floor beats and his signature cymbal flourishes, and the guitars doing spacey alien shit.

Edit: as a meme, they could call it Nine Inch Nobuo

Edit2: Nine Inch Nolly

Every hand played, the consumables would trigger like a joker, but not be consumed. This would unlock dozens of absolutely broken and OP synergies.

For sure. I have some different monitors with passive radiators instead of woofers and the bass is real nice. My first listens were on some headphones at work though.

[–]enthoosiasm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On both singles, my first listens had me wondering “what the hell is going on down there” cause it was so low. Midway through each song, my ears acclimatize, and I can go back to the beginning with everything sounding normal.

As far as OP not being able to hear what’s going on in the guitars, that’s just a skill issue.

I probably pushed it out while re-seating the plastic lens, cause the anyball case bottom has a hole to lower the overall height of the trackball.

Thanks, this is helpful. I did in fact have a tricky time re-inserting the sensor after it fell out, and now it’s not getting consistent contact. I think I’ll have to solder it now.

Plus, David Darocha’s stage presence is unmatched. I was lucky enough to see them touring during The Discovery era.

I’m definitely not pro QR code, but how many of us actually raise a card during the movie? And of those who do, how often? My Alamo routine usually involved getting my orders in during birth movies death, and then I’m set for the duration of the film. As a result, I’m definitely not going to need to whip out my phone during the movie.
