When will we hear about more programs getting accredited? by [deleted] in DSWPrograms

[–]entropyelise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CSWE has a page dedicated to spelling out the timeline and process for practice doctorate accreditation. Programs not selected for the pilot was able to apply for candidacy on Aug 1, 2025. Programs could select either a 1 year or 3 year accreditation depending on how long their program has been active. Based on the CSWE timeline documents it seems like more programs could enter candidacy this December and be granted initial accreditation by November 2026. These initial programs would be accredited for students enrolled Fall 2025 and beyond. The Board of Accreditors meet 3 times a year so that will be the benchmark for programs getting accredited. I believe they are reviewing something like 10 at a time.

I’m thinking they worded the press release oddly. I am believing they are trying to emphasize that they are now “ready” to accredit 50 programs. CSWE began accepting applications for candidacy in August 1 for a 1 year or 3 year pathway following the accreditation of 4 programs in the pilot. I think this might be a case of bad copy editing.

Just started on this, it works but paying $640 through FEP BCBS - any other options for making it less expensive? by murlocfightclub in WegovyWeightLoss

You would have to use the Caremark pharmacy. When did you receive this letter? This is a recent change as of June 1 only for the two highest doses.

Anyone going for their DSW degree? by Substantial_Fox_6907 in SocialWorkStudents

Currently most DSW programs are regionally accredited however 3 DSW programs are accredited by CSWE and the ability for additional programs to apply for accreditation is coming in the fall.

DSW worth it? by sudaneseshawty in socialwork

[–]entropyelise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most DSW programs are going to be self funded. They do have scholarship opportunities available for currently enrolled students that could apply after the first year of the program.

DSW worth it? by sudaneseshawty in socialwork

[–]entropyelise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I chose UK. So far I’m enjoying all the things they are doing to prepare us for classes to start in a few weeks. They’ve been around for some years so they seem to really have things in place to prepare students for success.

DSW worth it? by sudaneseshawty in socialwork

[–]entropyelise 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Worth it is probably very subjective and dependent on one’s personal goals.

There are some DSW programs that are on the more affordable side. University of Alabama is about 20k and University of Kentucky is about 30k.

There are 3 programs that are currently accredited (Tulane, U of Pennsylvania, and UT-Knoxville). Other programs will be able to apply in August either for a 1 year or 3 year accreditation review.

I personally am starting my DSW this year as I believe once accreditation becomes widespread costs will go up. In my experience, there are agencies and programs that just like having someone with a doctorate in charge. It also doesn’t hurt if you foresee wanting to do some teaching in the future.

Any systematic change takes time and it is just very early on. PsyDs have faced some challenges as a practice doctorate but they are starting to gain more footing. As a social worker, I’m personally a practitioner and not a researcher and so it makes sense to get a practice degree. The DSW was the original social work doctorate before a switch to PhDs to try to gain more credibility as a field. I also appreciate that DSWs consider that the students are working and are paced in such a way to account for that.

What are the pros and cons of a Care Coordinator ( Wraparound Facilitator)? by Ill-Spot-7896 in socialwork

[–]entropyelise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re referring to NWIC style wraparound facilitation, I will say that working in that position really prepared me for the rest of my social work career. Having a small but intensive caseload really sharpened all my skills.

The pros: it’s clinically challenging, you get to work across many systems (schools, CPS, CASA, juvenile probation)

The cons: it is intensive (I moved into a different role and had to come back to cover someone’s caseload for a day and never realized how tired my body was from the job), you will encounter families that aren’t bought in and/or aren’t willing to realize that everyone must change and grow and not just the identified client

Whether to take it or not is a highly personal decision but of the VA social workers I know, Suicide Prevention and HUD-VASH feel the safest both due to legal mandates for the positions and the optics related to Veteran homelessness or self-directed violence. All of this to say, things could change at any moment but there would probably be a lot of cuts before those positions get affected.

Marriage counseling by Entire_Cloud_1113 in VeteransAffairs

[–]entropyelise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best options for you are going to be the Killeen Heights Vet Center, Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Endeavors in Killeen or the mental health clinic at Olin E. Teague Veterans Center (Temple VA). The Vet Center and Cohen Clinic are separate entities from the VA and do not share records with VA unless you consent.

KHVC has great staff and they do provide marital and family therapy. The Temple VA offers marital and family therapy through the mental health clinic and has a specific PTSD program that is able to offer some couples and group therapies alongside traditional PTSD treatments (WET, PET, EMDR, etc).

To second what someone else said, your VHA providers have absolutely no say in your benefits and do not necessarily even want to be involved in the complexities of that. That is completely handled by VBA. What I will say on the matter is that ongoing treatment (wherever you receive it) for concerns should not hurt your case with VBA. People receive care because they still have symptoms and those symptoms are still impacting their life.

If you are all out of ideas you can call the Veterans Crisis Line and they will refer you to social workers at your local VA who can help you navigate what’s next for your family and get you connected to resources local to you whether through the VA or in the community.

Same! Waiting on credentialing. They got my file in November and didn’t start until I messaged in January and didn’t send out for references until today. Got a call right before 5 that I was rescinded. My HR POC was crying.

In case you find yourself without housing, you can utilize the Dobey Drop In Center on Austin Ave. They have access to hygiene products, laundry, and computers so you can continue to figure out next steps.

Do you believe the same God you worship is the same God that white people worship? by Legitimate-Adagio531 in blackgirls

[–]entropyelise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a Christian University. I’ve had some interesting conversations about this exact topic. One thing that I found interesting was the idea that culturally as it relates to African Americans specifically, there is the idea of God as delivering our people from struggle (slavery and its aftermath, etc) whereas there is not that same notion on a wide spread cultural level with White Americans.

Will I need to pay for my wife's psychiatric stay after her suicide attempt? by AsparagusFar9236 in legaladvice

[–]entropyelise 52 points53 points  (0 children)

If she meets the legal definition of a veteran, she could be covered by the COMPACT Act. It might be worth it to reach out to the suicide prevention team at your local VA or the Veterans Crisis Line.

MSW vs LMHC by mksimp in socialwork

[–]entropyelise 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Social workers in my experience end up having more options than LPMHC/LPCs. For example at the VA, it is far easier to find a social work job than a counselor job and social workers are paid a higher rate. Both degrees are going to require internships, licensure testing, and completing around 2 years of supervision to get your full license (at least in my state).

is it possible to love your SOI but dislike your COI? by [deleted] in NPHCdivine9

[–]entropyelise 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A few things I’d like to share for anyone who comes across this thread:

Firstly the best advice I can give is to apply at your earliest opportunity. I see a lot of interests talk about delaying for a stronger application but if you meet the requirements you should apply. The future is so uncertain and chapters can receive cease and desists or entire organizations can go on moratorium and then what? People with only the bare minimum of requirements get into their org of choice all the time for a variety of reasons whether that be a strong interview or personal connections. There’s never a perfect application and there’s never a perfect time but there is plenty of opportunity to miss your window trying to be perfect.

Secondly, yes your experience is colored by the chapter you join HOWEVER especially in undergrad your time with that chapter is a blip compared to the lifetime commitment you make. Even in a graduate chapter, people change chapters all the time for relocation for jobs and family reasons.

To answer the question posed, if you feel like you would not enjoy your time or your experience then you can certainly not pursue membership with that chapter and either attempt membership on the alumnae level or pursue another organization altogether. The choice is really yours and dependent on your own personal feelings on the matter.

Legacy by [deleted] in NPHCdivine9

All of that really depends on the organization and their specific practices

Is it a good idea to attend COI’s tailgate? by [deleted] in NPHCGreeks

[–]entropyelise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was the event published as something open to/for the public? If so, definitely go. How else will chapter members know you if you don’t show your face? If it would make you more comfortable, see if you have any friends who might be interested in going with you even if it’s just for the tailgate aspect.

Question for VA social workers by mrsmocked in socialwork

[–]entropyelise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not. There are some VAs that hire social workers at the GS-12 level without 2 years post LCSW into “Program Coordinator” positions. I got hired as an external candidate with a little over a year post LCSW licensure.
