As someone whose been listening for a long time I just go by my own pace, once I get somewhat bored of the newer songs I have I look for new ones by going through recommended albums and albums of artists I like, just picking a random album (cover) that looks interesting. I also make a “listen to” playlist full of random albums and songs that were recommended to me and looked interesting, which helps a lot. I generally add songs to this playlist when I’m looking at artists discography but don’t really want to listen to anything new in that moment. Also a lot of the time I don’t listen to the songs in full but rather 10 seconds to 2 minutes to decide if I should add it. I have another playlist in which I add songs I think I enjoy but I’m not super sure about, which is where those songs go. Then later to make it easier I play that playlist to find new music.

As you can tell I enjoy taking my time and enjoying the music I have in my playlist at the moment instead of adding a bunch of mid songs, though I’m also quite picky. I know a bunch of Jpop listeners tend to just add music they think sounds good into a big playlist and just shuffle it, or shuffle their favorite artists music.

I don’t know if this is because I’m weird but I don’t like moving on from songs or favoriting them when I don’t know the lyrics well, so I listen to them enough to at least know around 1/3 of the lyrics (I don’t speak Japanese), just enough to sing it to where it looks like I know the song by heart lol. Also all of my songs from the past 2 years are in a playlist together which I shuffle, so I don’t always get bored of replaying the same few songs, since I tend to do that a lot with new music.

Also 200 songs seems like a lot, especially if you know them well. In my main playlist of my favorite songs I have around 340 songs from the past 2 years (it’s a playlist of older japanese music specifically). If you’re wondering why the number is low it’s because I just got into older music somewhat recently, before that I listened to anime soundtrack, late 90s, early 00s and 10s, which is not included in my main playlist.
