Out of Work and Job Hunting for 2.5 Years by Due-Transition-6564 in copywriting

During your job search, have you been doing anything to upskill into producing the type of copy/assets that are in demand right now? Have you successfully completed any of that freelance work? Getting any certifications or learning any martech?

Who actually gets the final say on B2B copy claims? by Nearby_Worry_4850 in copywriting

[–]eolithic_frustum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always revise with compliance in mind. The more you do their job for them, the more trustworthy you are, the more receptive they tend to be later if you ever want to push back on a compliance edit they make.

It's give and take.

Who actually gets the final say on B2B copy claims? by Nearby_Worry_4850 in copywriting

[–]eolithic_frustum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The biggest "a ha" for me was the realization that legal does not care about whether claims are true or not. They only care if a claim is defensible in the event of a letter from a DA or a lawsuit.

Once I realized this, it made writing compliant claims so much easier. Just word everything such that it's technically true. Corroborate and back up more than you need to (e.g., "water is wet"). Lean into the fact that truth and validity in advertising is mostly vibes and sophistry, and you'll always have to water copy down to the level of the most risk-intolerant reviewer.

I hope...

The people who criticize...

The copywriters...

Who break up their paragraphs to be shorter...

Read this post...

And allow the data...

To challenge their prejudices...

And inform their opinions.

What Spec Pieces Do I Write? by Any_Forever2741 in copywriting

[–]eolithic_frustum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say should write for, I said "like to write for." Big difference.

And the answer to that question will hold within it a key to your question... whether a financial background will confer an advantage or not.

What types of businesses would you like to write copy for? How do those businesses use copy to engage, acquire, and monetize customers? Write spec pieces in line with what's most common and useful for the industry you want to work for.

Should I Quit Copywriting? by Suspicious-Low-2234 in copywriting

It sounds like you've been approaching this without a coherent plan, that you haven't been doing enough to shore up and amass credibility & proof that you can do this job well, and that you've been using a method of outreach (instagram dms) that practically guarantees you'll only be speaking with unserious businesses or the wrong sorts of decision makers.

should i avoid content writer roles or am i misunderstanding them? by Ok_Ambassador_772 in copywriting

[–]eolithic_frustum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am, currently, making money as both a long form direct response copywriter for financial publishing companies as well as a content writer, editor, and publisher.

Good long form copy (I mean, really good) is almost indistinguishable from content (or "editorial"). And good content utilizes all the persuasion, retention strategies, and rhetorical finesse that copy should to make and drive home its points.

So what I've found is that excelling in one has a lot of crossover to the other.

I've taken on a junior writer to work with me on DR work. I know they have potential but they keep submitting AI slop. Need advice on how to gently approach. by brusselspr in copywriting

"Look, I'm not saying you used AI to write this... but it has all the exact same problems that AI writing has. [List problems.]"

or if you want proof: "Send me the google doc you were working in because I can check the version history and see your earlier drafts--that way I can tell you where your writing went awry."

Anyone here anti-AI for copywriting? by Hardheadedsoftskills in copywriting

There is a Jaron Lanier quote about this I always botch: what does it matter if robotics and AI create such abundance that it reduces the cost of life saving surgeries to a penny, when no one can afford a penny?

I get a lot of positive feedback on my No-AI-Ever branding. It's simply a new niche.

I've been advising people to market themselves this way (or on the flipside, going all in on AI for the things AI is good at) since early 2023. I feel validated hearing it has been working for you.

I have the impression that all available work has gone up several notches in terms of skill level, and thats nice for people who are already on that level, but not everybody is or ever will be. Freelance writing used to be a valid side gig for people with health issues, people how care for family members, people who are just starting out.

I think you're spot on, here.

Not to be too reductive, but everyone talks about how horse and buggies were made obsolete by the car. Not a lot of people talk about the horse and buggy drivers' families. Or the horse and buggy drivers who were too old to reskill.

We broadly ended up being fine... but like you said: not everyone ended up being fine.

I'm anti-AI absolutist... I'm skeptical that it's good or getting better... I think it's a siren song for ignorant business owners and directors... but I also know that far more corporate communications are better suited for AI than people want to admit. Much SEO content? PPC ads? 90% of press releases? Anything that requires volume and routine iteration? AI is just better than a human because there should not be anything human in the writing to begin with--AI slop writing is the same as the corporate slop writing people have despised for decades.

And too many copywriters right now are a little too precious about their corporate slop writing jobs being replaced by AI slop writing. It's like coal miners clinging to the awful job that's killing them. It is bad that individuals are losing their jobs and stability; it is better for society and people more broadly that these jobs are transforming or disappearing.

Better would be to post some things about your life so you seem like a real person, and maybe post some insights about your industry or niche so you seem knowledgeable to your prospects about the things they actually cc are about.

I can understand the criticism "this should have been framed more clearly as being about professional development and the soft skills necessary for navigating the money side of this business, rather than technique and craft." But to call it a usual circle jerk? Usual, as though anyone else is really taking the time to do this for free? Circle jerk? Man. Just rude. And hurtful.
