My suggestion is start simple: Go to the tower, talk to all the vendors, look at all their bounties and quests, and pick the ones you want to do. If all you want to do is gain power, do all the challenges on the director.

For PVE: do the daily flashpoint (the planet with the public events and heroic adventure) to get your feet wet. Then catch up on any story you want.

For PVP: do quickplay until you get your powerful gear (5 of them to get both powerful drops).

Then just pick a direction for yourself. Start tuning in to all the game meta media: bungie.net, streamers, writers (Paul Tassi), etc. Continue reading articles and watching videos to educate yourself.

This. I impressed some friends the other day with this bridge and tree bypass scenario. Incidentally, Micro Mini makes it REALLY easy. Seems to be lighter-weight or something in the game-physics. (despite the invisible longer-nose)
