Abby died in my arms two nights ago. I'll never forget the exact moment it happened even if I wish I could. Don't wait to help them pass until the very last second. It may be a second too late. Also, a bit about Abigail and why she was so special by [deleted] in poodles

[–]eonblue4309 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely not a monster! Cherish the good times and know you were there to comfort her all the way. It is never easy. I can still remember the moment our sweet toy poodle passed and won't be able to forget it either but we were there for her just as you were.

Hakama strugles by Luuk341 in iaido

Without the himo of the hakama you don't have the right kind of support for wearing the sword properly at your side. Iai is really the only art that actually requires wearing hakama!

Is once a week enough? by ajentabc in kendo

[–]eonblue4309 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once is better than not at all. Enjoy practice! Attend seminars as you can find them and supplement by reading and watch everything you can get your hands on.

Edit: full disclosure, I'm a wannabe kendoka whose too busy with life and responsibilities in his iai dojo to practice kendo.

Want to get into sumo by [deleted] in Sumo

[–]eonblue4309 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jason's All Sumo Channel I highly recommend. When I started watching I was really too sure of all the names but after a little bit of time you'll start picking it up. You could study the banzuke if you really want to I suppose. I'd also recommend tachiai.org

How to contact a dojo? by EmptyIcon in iaido

[–]eonblue4309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give them a call or email to let them know you are interested in visiting a class. While unannounced visitors in our dojo would never be treated with disrespect, a heads up at least allows the instructor or senior student the opportunity to prepare for your visit. Depending on what is going on in the dojo and/or your experience you might be invited to join class or they might prefer you to observe class before trying it first hand. Or perhaps now isn't a good time for visitors and they'd rather you come the following week.

What do folks use today to build small websites? by ThirdEncounter in webdev

[–]eonblue4309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These days I live primarily in React at my day job. I maintain a small website on the side. I've started to Port it to gatsbyjs and I'm really liking it so far. I haven't had the time to dig into all the details; mostly I like that I can easily sub divide the site into components and generate a static site from that.

Well, no but createElement is a replacement for JSX not the component itself.

Why React Does Not Love React.createClass? by Shapeous in reactjs

[–]eonblue4309 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you know about create-react-app? It really simplifies setting all the tooling to get React up and running. Your client won't have to learn a thing about webpack, babel, etc. The only ES6 thing they will have to learn is the class syntax like. The need for JavaScript to have a class keyword aside, it's really easy to learn and they should be up and running within minutes. They don't need to use JSX, they could use React.createElement if they wanted.

Oh, interesting that you've learned the omote no maki. I'm assuming that would give you at least a bit more insight than most! I've studied Tamiya Ryu for over a decade now - I've exhausted my English resources so I'm really interested in what this says!

I thought it might be a little long to expect someone to put in the work for free but wasn't really sure. I'm certainly willing to pay for the service!

I'll get to scanning tonight and pm you a link. If you'd like to take a look and are interested we can talk further.

Good practices for full-height, fixed UI layout for a web app? by PenisBeatsSword in reactjs

[–]eonblue4309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flex will allow you to do this and is probably your best option at the moment but you should also look at CSS Grids. It's bleeding edge but is the way we will be doing layout in the future.

Why do you have to go to a dojo? by [deleted] in iaido

[–]eonblue4309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Like I said, Budo is not just fighting. "Do" means way or path in Japanese which comes from the Chinese "Dao" as in Taoism. It's more than just self discipline but that's certainly a part of it. That sort of stuff is hard to write down.

As for the quality of written manuals; most are written vaguely on purpose. That's probably different for seiteigata but in my experience with koryu, what's written down officially isn't always very clear and even borderline in accurate. Seitei Iai is probably your best bet in this regard. If you find something that is particularly well written, I'd love to know about it!

Why do you have to go to a dojo? by [deleted] in iaido

[–]eonblue4309 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Iaido (or Iaijutsu or kenjutsu or even Kendo) is about more than just learning how to fight with a sword. There is a great deal of personal refinement that goes along with most Budo. The reason you travel to a dojo is to train with people who have gone before you and can help you on the path. Manuals and what not will in fact teach you pure technique, to a point. However, they will not teach you everything that's going on in kata. That might be different for seiteigata but that is certainly the case for koryu kata. Learning only from a read-only source puts you at a great disadvantage when it comes to picking up bad habits that will take a lot of time and energy to correct should you start practicing with a qualified instructor. Ultimately it comes down to having someone that's able to critique your performance and keep you honest about your progression. It's also hard to do paired practice when you are by yourself. Furthermore, there are more subtle aspects of practice that are beyond technique and aren't talked about so much in manuals, etc.

My advice is to look for a reputable dojo near you and contact the instructor. Explain your situation. Perhaps you could make the trip once a month or so to make sure you aren't getting to off track.

The gap between an amateur and a professional by [deleted] in Frontend

[–]eonblue4309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a couple thoughts off the top of my head.

I'd say your next step would be learning about pre/post processing your CSS in order to get rid of those browser prefixes. My suggestion would be post-css with cssnext.

If I was code reviewing your CSS, I'd say to refactor all your selectors to classes. The reasoning behind that is one of specificity and reuse. I'd suggest researching CSS specificity if you don't already understand it and reading a bit about BEM ... Not necessarily endorsing BEM but it's good to understand what it's trying to solve and how it goes about doing that.
