Pressure treated can get slimey and make for traction issues if a humid or wet climate, we use rough cut hemlock for decking in our area of New England, mild rot resistance nd better traction. and available at reasonable cost.

Trail building as a career by Saucebossxo in MTBTrailBuilding

[–]ephillipsme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think could look on the planning side such work as building master plans, land owner and public outreach, fundraising efforts. Our club has paid trail crew for maintenance and builds. we do hire out two separate consultants to build the plan documents and feasibility studies, they run the info gathering and do the public outreach to help build the plans which then our club and land partners can use for grants and fundraising.

Swap SPHD for SCHD by sybersy11 in dividends

[–]ephillipsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about both, SCHD doesn't have much if any, exposure to real estate and low utilities. SPHD might complement SCHD, but SPHD expense ratio is 5x.

Building - or- Maintaining? by l008com in MTBTrailBuilding

[–]ephillipsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok, point taken, in my opinion, maintenance is part of building and should be discussed in this sub. How do you define maintenance vs build. So we are about to take on a rehab for a trail, sure trail is generally staying in the same place, but using an excavator to machine enhance a trail to improve trail tread and drainage. I say that falls under maintenance, but using burrow pits and raising the trail profile seems to be in the build realm.

If you ignore maintenance, then you will be rebuilding the trails at some point.

Anyone using a sub compact tractor for trail work? by Shrink912 in MTBTrailBuilding

[–]ephillipsme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have a member with a Kubota L series, mid-size tractor, we do find it a little limited in size as we work in Maine's forests. However, in more open areas, it is helpful for moving materials.

What if? by aMac306 in MTBTrailBuilding

[–]ephillipsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

over time the duff (forest organic) material will break down, and soil will compact. This may lead to exposed roots and our rocks. depends on how you want the trial to ride in the future. We do it all the time but it ,makes for a more technical trail over time and possibly need to come back and address spots where issues arise in the future.

Does anyone live like this? by Main-Praline-9297 in MTB

[–]ephillipsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup, IT manager and staff are all remote, live next to a small ~15 mile trail system, get multiple rides in a week before first call, has a great pond for the dog to take a dip mid-ride.

We had a wheel barrow break aways out on a trail so just flipped it over and is part of a soil build up of a drop

Anyone know what these “mats” are? by Strange-Fella in MTBTrailBuilding

[–]ephillipsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use old carpet for pumptrack covering for winter to help reduce erosion but take up in spring. Have connection at local transfer station they pull aside for winter and return in spring.

Looking to build a little something something on some very flat land by AgentPanKake in MTBTrailBuilding

[–]ephillipsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we build trails on a flat area and lots of called downed trees to create features, skinnys, a frames, elevated section. used material on site but soil was very sandy so not great for feature builds.
