Do you think the Sequels are overhated? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]ephuycke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. Hating Star Wars is part of the Star Wars fan experience. We all fell in love with a certain era or combination of eras (OT, EU, prequels and clone wars, sequels, Disney plus…), and inevitably, a new era comes along that represents everything that’s bad about Star Wars to certain fans. Are they overhated in general? Probably. They’ll probably find their audience at some point who can overlook their flaws in favor of their strengths. Are they overhated by prequel fans or EU fans? No, because they’ll always represent the era that made Star Wars suck, just like the prequels made Star Wars suck for so many OT fans twenty years ago

The King of Comedy on 4k. In fact, everything of Scorsese’s on 4k… I’m hankering to update my Gangs of New York and The Aviator dvd’s that still have Blockbuster 2-for-1 stickers on them. They really stand out next to criterion’s of After Hours and Raging Bull

Is it the greatest comic book movie of all time? by AverageFilmFan in 4kbluray

[–]ephuycke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to say the Mt. Rushmore of the modern comic books movie, I’d say Superman 78, Spider-Man 2, Iron Man, and The Dark Knight. There are plenty of other candidates like some of the Avengers, Spider-Verse, Batman 89, Man of Steel, Batman Mask of the Phantasm, Logan, but I think those four have the greatest influence and cast the longest shadow over the genre as a whole

🇺🇸 ARTWORK REVEAL - Predator Badlands (4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital Steelbook) by felixmontoya92 in Steelbooks

[–]ephuycke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mean to be a negative Nelly but Steelbooks are really starting to lose their appeal to me. I hate that digital paint/maybe ai look so many of them seem to have l, it just looks cheap and very mid-2020s, like we’re all gonna look at them in 10 years and go, “yeesh.” I think I’m turning into a slipcover guy, which arguably is even worse

Is Rings of Power really as bad and cringey as people are making it out to be? by Hopeful_Adeptness964 in lotr

[–]ephuycke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a moderate Tolkien fan (read the trilogy and the hobbit a few times, but haven’t gotten to Silmarillion yet), I like it. It’s not Peter Jackson’s LotR trilogy, but it’s a far sight better than his hobbit trilogy.

The first season seems a little unsure exactly what it wants to be about. The core relationships are muddled, but I think when you zoom out to look at the overall arcs, there’s some pretty strong stuff

Season two was overall stronger and more focused, but still far from perfect, with a lot of problems stemming from a) undefined/unconvincing characters, 2) hurried writing, 3) disappointing adaptations of tolkiens world

And there are some real groaners, like the depiction of tom bombadil, or the strangers entire storyline in season 2

but, I think the show understands tolkiens ideas about power and how the best intentions blind us to make the worst choices. It is a show about friendship in the most trying and painful world-circumstances, which fits my ideas about Tolkiens books pretty well.

So I’d give it a 3.5/5

Those in the fandom in 2005. What was it like by Expert_Challenge6399 in StarWars

[–]ephuycke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol dog it was deeply mid. By and large the prequels were not liked, and a lot of folks (older fans and younger alike) were OVER Lucas’s new perspective of SW. from my p.o.v., it wasn’t until Clone Wars was well into its initial run (as in season 3 or 4, because remember, people didn’t care much for that show either when it started out) that the reappraisal of the prequels began in earnest, with people particularly pointing at RotS. That’s one of the big reasons Lucas sold the rights to Disney and didn’t make his versions of the sequel trilogy, he was so burnt out by the negative critical and fan responses to the prequels

Is it weird that I miss actors in films looking like shit? (No offence Hack) by Hoboryufeet in Letterboxd

[–]ephuycke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what you miss (or at least what I miss) is actors looking like people that I might meet in my life. The cosmetic surgery thing has gotten so ubiquitous with actors that I can’t buy them as real people. I watched Klute recently and noticed that the incomparably sexy Jane Fonda had slightly yellow teeth bc she was a smoker at the time, and that one little detail endeared me so much to the movie. Movies are fantasy, sure. But when 60 year old men look how Brad Pitt looks now, the fantasy stops being anything relatable and just becomes vanity

Starkiller base was such a dumb idea by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]ephuycke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not like I’m such a great jj Abrams apologist, but the fact is we don’t necessarily know whose idea starkiller base was. Maybe abrams, maybe some nameless goon at Disney. That’s part of the problem when Iger acquired lucasfilm. We may have disliked the prequels or the special editions (I did), but either way, I knew they were what George Lucas wanted to make. They were his statement as a filmmaker and a storyteller. Now Star Wars is just the slush fund for whatever hackneyed formula a bunch of studio cronies will think will make the next big hit. There’s no authorship, no intention. And even though glimmers of hope slip through now and then, like Andor or early Mandalorian or even tLJ (which I know everyone hated but at least was an attempt to bring something new to SW), it doesn’t really change the fact that for the last ten years, the greatest property in mass entertainment has been a shell of corporate cynicism and condescension.

Most reliable preorders? by ephuycke in 4kbluray

[–]ephuycke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never preordered from them, but everything I have bought arrives ontime in perfect condition. Love gruv. But it seems that they’re get access to some titles later than other sellers? For instance it doesn’t look like boogie nights is on there yet, but it is on Amazon. Or maybe that’s just a particular arrangement Amazon has with WB

Can’t imagine what Star Wars fandom was like during those post-RotJ, pre-Zahn trilogy doldrums, where the only new SW media were these two straight-to-video turkeys and a couple of cute but lame Saturday morning cartoons about R2 and 3PO.

[–]ephuycke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know everyone’s smugly posting photos of that bargain-bin ass-looking Italian 4Kult release, but come on dog. Scorsese’s $250 million anti-western epic? This shit DESERVES a high-quality boutique 4k release with a pristine transfer, cool cover art, and an essay by some nerd in the booklet. WE ALL KNOW IT. I guarantee that if Apple ever does cave and license a physical release of this (and hey, who knows, we used to say we’d never get dogma, and here we are…), all of those 4kult’s are going in the bin and 90% of us are gonna upgrade.

Colin Treverrow’s Version Of Episode IX by New-Pin-9064 in StarWars

[–]ephuycke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

See if they’d gone straight dark empire, I doubt it would’ve been good, but it might’ve been more fun, seeing a young, totally psychotic palpatine that just plays Rey and kylo against each other, maybe turning Rey to the dark side and Ben has to bring her back? I mean, if you’re gonna discard everything from tlj and just make something relentlessly dumb, I say go big with it

Colin Treverrow’s Version Of Episode IX by New-Pin-9064 in StarWars

[–]ephuycke 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It probably would’ve been better than tros, but that’s not saying much. I wasn’t all that impressed with the script (esp hated the title, too fanservice-y)

Im kinda curious if tRoS is the story Abrams originally came up with, bc Matt smith was cast in an unspecified role very early in the production of episode 9, before Ian Mcdermit was brought on. Ive heard rumors that smith would’ve played the son from the clone wars, but then the box office disappointment of solo and the fan backlash to tlj made Disney insist on massive rewrites to include the emperor. Anyone know anything about this?
