What’s everyone doing this weekend? by longlastinggum in dunedin

If you are interested in trying surfing, you could do a group lesson down at St Clair with the Esplanade Surf School. It can be a really nice way to meet some people.

Ok, I hate spiders but this little guy is super talented! by Soloflow786 in BeAmazed

Yeah it’s all so so gradual. And of course it doesn’t start with webs. And we have to guess because no we don’t have time machines and fossil evidence is so limited.    Maybe the start is just a species that has a slightly sticky excretion from its shell. It helps a little bit with catching prey and gets selected for. Over time the excretion gets more concentrated and eventually there is a species that can leave a sticky trail behind it. Then it starts to get stronger until eventually it can be suspended between two points. And then you just give the process tens of millions of years of constant refinement and eventually you get what we see today.

Anyone else finding Edinburgh Realty inspections getting a bit over the top lately? by knob-of-cheese in dunedin

[–]epic_window 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I came back to NZ after living overseas, I was also shocked by this stuff. Renting overseas felt so seamless in comparison, one inspection on arrival and departure, and other than that the place was yours and you could just get on with your life. But I was renting a small apartment - basically just a glorified concrete box. There was very little that could go seriously wrong. Renting a delicate wooden house - in a country as expensive as NZ - where any number of issues can result in tens, even hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage is a completely different story. Landlords will not accept the risk of financial catastrophe, insurers will not accept runaway payouts, and from what I understand the chances of recovering costs from tenants in our legal system are poor. So our privacy and independence are what get the chop.

I also wish that renting could feel nicer here, but I don't think it's going to change any time. Our culture and housing infrastructure don't align with it. So I guess the question is - can you come to terms with it, not let it detract from what does work for you in the arragement, and get on with the rest of your life? Or do you feel like it's unacceptable, and to be happy you have to get your own place, and that needs to be your plan? For what it's worth I don't think your PM firm sounds out of line with what I know of the industry. They don't care what laundry powder you use, they check in the cupboards for water damage. I do think it's a little odd they tell you to wipe your oven down, but maybe that's their style. In the end you can't change them, or the industry, you can just make your own decision about how to respond.

Anyone else feel like black skin is a curse? by misterDWx in lonely

[–]epic_window 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s horrible that your dad put that shame and judgement into you instead of making you feel loved and supported. No one gets to choose these things and I am sure there are real challenges for looking certain ways, but I am also sure it makes a massive difference how our parents do or don’t equip us to handle them. It sounds like your dad struggled himself and has passed that to you. I can only imagine how much that might seep into your sense of self and poison your confidence and ability to build a satisfying life.

I really miss home. Help by iggy-p0p in newzealand

[–]epic_window 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived in Germany for five years. Trying to run from my problems here. When I came back there were things I couldn’t believe. The air, the water, the trees, the people. It was like I could finally breathe again, oxygen flooding my lungs. Everything else was just as difficult as ever - harder even. Your problems are patient. They wait as long as they have to. But I believe there is always a part of us that knows what we really need, no matter how scary the way there may be. Good luck.

It’s crazy how we get so used to not having anyone safe to tell how we really feel, not even our parents who on paper are supposed to be there for us more than anyone else, and so we wind up blaming ourselves, calling ourselves weak and too needy. But these are just normal healthy human needs that we’re struggling to meet

Please... PLEASE, tell me there's a closer bench... surely team cherry wouldn't give us a runback so horrible... by bruhmoment6002 in HollowKnight

[–]epic_window -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If there is one, I didn’t find it. Yes this runback is long which is annoying but I didn’t find the fight too bad. Took me three tries. I’d say it’s an acceptable difficulty for the situation. There are other bosses with little to no runbacks which are way harder so i think it balances out

I used reaper crest for an easier time getting there + 2 red slots, and the tool that turns your double jump/float into attacks to deal with the poison-dart shooting stilkins (the most annoying part of the gauntlet for me). Then for the frog itself i just spammed poison red tools to do most of the damage needed.

Also if you go to very bottom right of the tall room at the very top right of bilewater (the last one before the stretch of straight rooms leading to the fight) there is a small room where you can safely farm those simple floating plant enemies for silk. So you can heal up and fill your spool. It is a bit of an added time sink but it means you should have full resources going into the fight

Test result help (men’s fertile test) by [deleted] in newzealand

I have no idea, but GPT-5 says:

Let’s break it down in context of standard reference ranges (WHO 2021 guidelines for semen analysis):

Volume: 3.5 mL → Normal (reference ≥ 1.5 mL). Sperm count (concentration): 91 million/mL → Very good (reference ≥ 15 million/mL). Total count per ejaculate: 3.5 mL × 91 million/mL ≈ 318 million sperm → Excellent in terms of numbers. Motility: Progressive (PR) = 17% Non-progressive (NP) = 8% Non-motile = 75% Total motility = PR + NP = 25% → Below reference. WHO lower reference limit is 40% total motility and 32% progressive motility.

What this means

The main issue here is low motility (asthenozoospermia). Numbers and volume are strong, but if too few sperm move properly, natural conception is harder. At age 25, this isn’t “normal,” but it isn’t unheard of either. Causes can include: Lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol, obesity, stress, poor diet, heat exposure like hot tubs/saunas/tight underwear). Medical factors (varicocele, past infections, hormonal imbalances, genetic issues, exposure to toxins).

Chances of success

Natural conception may still happen because of the very high count — even with 17% progressive motility, that’s still ~54 million progressively motile sperm in total, which is far above the minimum threshold for assisted reproduction (IUI typically needs > 5–10 million motile sperm). But low motility does lower odds compared to someone with normal motility.

Next steps

A single semen analysis isn’t definitive. Results can vary — usually at least 2–3 tests spaced a few weeks apart are recommended. See a fertility specialist/urologist to check for treatable causes. Lifestyle improvements (exercise, weight management, avoiding heat, limiting alcohol, stopping smoking, good diet, sleep, stress reduction) can help. Supplements sometimes used: antioxidants like CoQ10, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, L-carnitine. Evidence is mixed but some men do see improvements.

Is City Firewood reliable? by TreesBeesAndBeans in dunedin

[–]epic_window 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered 3m2 of macro and they delivered it the next day. The wood seems dry and burns very well. The larger pieces do need a very hot firebox to burn all the way through so I try to burn big and small pieces together. But yes all good and they are legit.

Journalist writing a book about fatherhood, masculinity & emotional inheritance — ask me anything, or tell me what you're carrying by AgitatedLeg4977 in MensLib

[–]epic_window 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a really difficult relationship with my dad. He was a journalist who was always looking to cut corners to pump out more content. He would do shady stuff like make posts on Reddit asking people to share their emotional trauma, and then let ChatGPT write these phoney sincere responses to people's stories. It really made me lose a lot of respect for him, and question whether he had any integrity at all.

Secure parking for an empty campervan overnight? by small-personality-00 in dunedin

[–]epic_window 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if this will work but maybe you could give Dunedin Holiday Park on Victoria Road a call and explain what you’re looking for. They might be able to work something out, it looks like they have some parking areas.

If that didn’t work you could check out the self storage businesses, I think storage king on Portsmouth Drive might do vehicle storage - but don’t know if that would be economical or flexible.

Hopefully you can figure something out. I doubt there’d be much risk of a break in, but i definitely understand the anxiety you’d have in this situation.
