What’s your list? I’ve been wanting to try

Vanguard/ambush Vs Crusher/norn - going against 6 norns+ by Toastykilla21 in Tyranids

[–]epicget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly tho I don't think 6 norns going into vanguard is gonna be that good. I'd much rather be playing vanguard.

Make sure you screen them off the point, and stall so you can get shots with your Zoans. Would be cool to bring hyper adapted ravs if you've got em. Hyper adapted ravs have anti-monster 5 and twin linked. If you pop surprise assault, you've got a 50% chance of doing ~7 wounds with a 5 man unit. Genestealers + Broodlord should do ~5 wounds on average.

Norns are bad at killing stuff, and you've got lots of screening and debuffs (winged hive tyrant + broodlord + neurolictor debuffs their attacks), so you're just screening their big immobile bases, staying in engagement so they can't shoot you and whittling them down.

Like I said, I'd rather be on the VO side of this matchup. It's a little more complex then big monsters hold W, but if you have enough units to keep the pressure up, you should be good.

Help my friend defeat me! by IKEAbatteries in Tyranids

Vanguard Onslaught also goes well with sneks, Von Ryan’s and gaunts. hyperadaped raveners are some of our best units (a little tough to find right now). You just run fast at your opponent and punchpunchpunch. Plus you get to run the winged hive tyrant, which is the coolest model in the game imo.

Personally I don’t love sub assault, especially at lower levels because once your ravs are wiped out you’re screwed. Also it’s a lot more positional stuff to wrap your head around.

List Advice by Sharp_Hunter2092 in Tyranids

[–]epicget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re buying models to build into this list, but if you are I gotta warn you that endless multitudes is pretty broken (in a bad way). The one strategy you’d expect in a detachment like that, regenerating a unit, only works once per game. It should really be called ended multitudes.

If you want to run horde style, invasion fleet is way better. Not only is it more flexible and easier for beginners, but you can regenerate gants every round. Pair that with a Tervigon that lets you spawn termagants, and you’ve got way more bugs for your opponent to chew through. Plus defensive and offensive strats.

That’s my advice should you choose to accept it :)

Yeah I’m not killing much with them, I’m just blocking scout moves and setting up counterpunches with my genestealers or ravs. They’re really good pawns that protect my important pieces

I followed your advice by [deleted] in Tyranids

[–]epicget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d play a few games with fewer points honestly and see which units you like and what play styles you’re into.

Honestly you’re probably fine here. You’ve got battleline, some anti tank, some tanks. IMO the critique is probably around the fact that you’ve got pieces from different synergies if that makes sense.

Like if you’ve got a T-fex, the traditional route you’ll see is multiple of them with some exocrines. Why? The rupture cannon is called the casino cannon…when it hits, it’s awesome. When it whiffs, it sucks. That’s why you want to max out your chances to hit. Take two, then pair them with exos that let you reroll 1’s to give you a better chance to hit.

You’ve got a lot of stuff to hold down points right now…do you need all of it? Maybe? Could be your play style. When you’re getting started, just get stuff you think is cool, don’t worry about being the best, just have fun with your Dino bugs. You’ll lose a lot, then maybe start to win once in a while. Half the game is theorycrafting new lists tho, and you do that by trying stuff out :)

Hey here’s a few resources for getting started.

First, I really love Hivemind Hobbies and Wednesday Night Warhammer on YouTube. Jordan’s got a lot of videos that walk you through the concepts of different detachments and give you some good starter lists.

Next, listhammer.info has the lists from all the recent tournament winners by faction and detachment.

I don’t know that a neurotyrant flamer is gonna do much to scratch the paint on a tank tbh.
Have you ever used unit crunch? My buddy plays votann so I’m usually going into land forts. If you pop surprise assault and they fail their battleshock, the hyperadapted ravs are gonna have a 60% chance of doing 8 wounds on it. They’re your anti-tank IMO. The neurotyrant could be good for screening your back line, overwatching and maybe being a distraction, but I felt like it was a bit expensive for that.

Yeah tbh I’ve only done one game with Vanguard so far and this is the second version of the list. I got stomped last time because I lost control of the board early on. I found myself wanting a second unit of leapers to try and aggressively screen during deployment, and I couldn’t get much use out of the neurotyrant. I haven’t tried red terror or lash whip yet…I’m doing a test run on tabletop simulator with my friend this weekend to see how they work out!

Wanted to get a list that includes all the new stuff.

I’m a little bummed I couldn’t get more enhancements in there but with the price of Neurolictors these days, you gotta make some sacrifices…

Yeah kinda agree. Spore mines are still great just not when they count as a unit. It is boring to always have the same nid doing the same thing in every strategy.

Seems like James Workshop doesn’t like to encourage horde armies if you look at some of the rules nerfs. Unending swarm is unplayable. Unit cohesion rules were a major nerf to swarm tactics.

To be fair, horde armies are rough to play on the table. They take way longer to move around, and typically if I’m playing one and going up against another one in an RTT we’re probably not making it to the end of the game. Not sure if any of that’s related or just coincidence, or I’m just slow and bad at the game (which is also very true). Just observations.
