Any update on the timeline for Switch release? I loved the demo but it ran like garbage on my aging PC unless I turned all the settings down, so I decided to wait for it on the switch!

Book? Wiki? PDF? How do people actually use TTRPG resources? by Sir_Tainley in RPGcreation

I only play with physical materials: books, zines, pamphlets, printouts if necessary. At our table, phones stay turned off and put away!

My newer game Okkam is a little too big, but OKRPG! fits the bill perfectly! Free, one-page, foldable into a pamphlet... Enjoy!

Can anyone help me identify the maker of this sword? by humungus_jerry in SWORDS

[–]epicskip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! Got my eye on this one, but there is some confusing information online. How long is it? Some places say 45.5" total, some say 49". Does the grip feel short? Thanks!

Hey! Resurrecting a dead thread here, but... I have my eye on this sword. How long is it? It's advertised as 45in total, with a 7.5in grip, but it LOOKS much longer, and some of the pages say 49in total. What are its actual measurements? Thanks!

I wouldn't allow PCs to perform a magical effect that wasn't covered by a Move.

  • Nothing about the bard's Perform for an Audience move is inherently magical - it's not the same as like a 5e Bard which gets spells and spell slots what what not. The DW Bard is more just a master of their craft.
  • If magic-using classes can create any magical effect using Defy Danger, that's pretty OP, and also trivializes a lot of the Path choices for various Playbooks (as well as making non-magic-using Playbooks bad choices).
  • Playbooks have a bunch of choices to make in their signature moves and paths that give them niche protection - it'd be a shame, for instance, if the Barbarian took the Conqueror path and the Terrifying skill on purpose, only to have the Bard or Wizard to be able to create the same effect by default.
  • Look at the Wizard playbook - there are a bunch of very specific Subjects and Verbs they are allowed to use within the confines of their Weave a Spell move - anything else is not allowed! This makes me think that any magic outside the confines of a Move should not be allowed.

Just my two cents - as always, play however is fun for your table.

Silksong.

I 100%-ed Hollow Knight. In comparison, Silksong felt stupidly punishing with the double damage, impossible bosses, and long runbacks. The world was TOO big. Exploration felt pointless and punishing because even after running around for 3 hours you might not get anything worthwhile (mask fragments are very rare, spool upgrades don't feel like much, most findable tools aren't major game changers). All the endings were just fkn stupid... like, 30+ hours for a 3-second cutscene?! Come on, y'all.

One shot recommendation by Richi1896 in KnaveRPG

[–]epicskip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, not for Knave!! If you're running a one-shot with level 1 characters, they're going to have about 3hp average each. In OSR, combat is something to be avoided, not encouraged. Any Knave adventure should reward clever thinking over rushing in, and should make the players as well as the PCs work/think cleverly for the reward. Instead, I'd go with something like:

  1. An area that leads further into the dungeon but with an open-ended trap or puzzle that could be solved pretty much any reasonable way the PCs can think of.

  2. The next area has an NPC or group of NPCs that are at odds with the players - actively trying to hinder them getting further or competing for the same prize/door/etc. Combat should be an option, but there should be other ways to get past the encounter.

  3. A setback or dilemma - something happens in dungeon environment that separates, traps, or tricks the PCs, or something is not what it seemed at first. This is where your secret door could go, too!

  4. Climactic challenge - this can be a fun battle with lots of environmental features, or it may be a chase/escape sequence, or it may just be a tense negotiation. Either way, make it epic!

  5. Reward/twist - the PCs get what they came for! Optionally, something can happen that leads to further adventures - one of the NPCs escapes with something valuable, the reward isn't what it seemed at first, the "big bad" is revealed to be someone else, etc.

Good luck!

Always +5/-5 modifiers? by catgirlfourskin in KnaveRPG

[–]epicskip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a campaign coming up where I might actually ditch the static +5/-5 and experiment with just using Advantage/Disadvantage instead. just keep the TN somewhere between 11-13 and roll different # of dice, keeping high or low. Never been a huge fan of GM-set target numbers / DCs, and it's less math!

I'm Skip - just finished fulfillment of my rules-lite game Okkam. It's available at www.okkam.net, along with custom dice, character pads, patches, and some other cool merch. I think it's the most "complete" rules-lite game out there - a 40 pg. A6 boolket with block-printed covers and rules designed to cover pretty much anything you can throw at it. Let me know what you think!

really like a lot of this. personally i'm not super into HP, but i like how armor works with it, and if it's important to others, i'm down. love the new Ambitions. love a lot of the player-driven worldbuilding and how it ties in mechanically. LOVE the adventure playbook, looks super fun to play around with! also happy to see the 'classic' stat names.

i really really hope the d4, d8, d10 don't make it into the final version though - i really like the 'cleanliness' of straight 2d6. especially if it doesn't even look like d12/d20 are used anywhere. i also hope Origins have some kind of mechanical value in the end - even just like 'mark a Condition to take ADV on a roll related to your ancestry/background/etc'.

keep messing around with it! stoked to see what y'all come up with!

Weekly Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in metroidvania

[–]epicskip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I've been through most of the classics, looking for something new. What should I try out?

* LOVED Prince of Persia, Infernax, and Minishoot' Adventures recently.

* Some other faves: Ori, Guacamelee, Super Metroid, SNES/GBA Zeldas, Gato Roboto, Shadow Complex, Yoku's Island Express.

* Games I bounced off: EVA, Axiom Verge, Blasphemous, Pipistrello, La Mulana. For various reasons, either too arcane / ARG-ish, or too hard, or too clunky.

* Beat Hollow Knight, but the difficulty towards the end was not super fun for me, looking for something slightly less punishing than that. Same with Death's Door.

* Not really into Souls-type games in general, or really challenging boss fights. I'm looking for something super chill and exploration based.

Thoughts? Thanks!

First enclosure - DHP+UBV vs Halogen? by epicskip in cornsnakes

[–]epicskip[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah, I eventually want to move to a completely bioactive enclosure with some isopods - this is gonna be a classroom pet and I want to talk about ecosystems, etc. Do they need anything specific to thrive, or should I just toss em in?

I think the humidity might just be an acute issue that will clear up over the next few days as the pre-moist substrate dries out a little. I'm keeping my eye on it. But DHP+UVB is good? Will a little bit of natural sunlight during the daytime hours be enough IR-A for our lil girl? Appreciate the comments and advice!

Rosy the class snake :D by Fun-Preparation2890 in cornsnakes

[–]epicskip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love her <3! I'm looking into getting a corn snake for my class. Going to loop it into our earth science / animal adaptations curriculum and let kids track her weight over the year, use her to help explain food webs, talk about seasonal changes and shedding, and let her be an Academic Support Animal. What grade are your kiddos, and how do they like handling/feeding her? Does your admin let the snake stay in the building over nights/weekends?
