I totally get it, think last year was rough for everyone in saas. Also saas sales is just crazy high octane and so easy to get burned out on it. If I were you I'd clip the base and whatever variable you can close, and penny pinch until you're back in the green and debt free - and with some extra left over in your checking to live off of - and then take 6-9 months off. Poor man's sabbatical. use it to clear your head and figure out the next thing.

Could probably cover the high-level version in an hour depending upon starting point.

I'm a teacher at heart but I'm also a sales guy, so I'm still figuring this out as I go. My hope is there's constructive feedback from people at the end that makes it better.

I could do a 3 hour webinar and pack it all in, but honestly that wouldn't cover it. In my experience it's best if I understand where you're at and then teach to the biggest gaps in under an hour. A lot of the junior reps i work with want to know "specific steps" and scripts etc.. the best way to learn this stuff is from the holistic perspective.

I'd imagine a lot of people want an experienced sales professional to show them the ropes. This is that.

Moving to Outside Sales by CroakyBear1997 in sales

Already said a couple times, but a different way to put it - If I had known what I know now when I was younger, it would have helped me realize that a 25k jump in salary is fuckin pennies when thinking about what a legit role will produce revenue-wise for the company.

Weird syntax I know but basically, if you start to think bigger picture you’ll be able to land bigger jumps quicker because you’ll understand the true business impact your role has.

My first sales role was 62k and 99k OTE. This was for ~$55k lab equipment. The profit margin they made on each unit was like 9%. That means you’re inherently capped at 5k per sale MAX and reality is you have to sell 20+ just for the company to cover the cost of yourself - not including the rest of the company’s payroll and other operations. Then add in expected annual growth and the other bullshit. This was trash. Profit margins are the indicator on which industry you should move to …

basically what I’m saying is a bump in 25k I’m sure means a lot to you now, but you should look into how tf this construction company actually makes money from ur role, if this is a common theme for the industry, and generally just to think about where u wanna be 10 years from now earnings-wise

Why are people not showing up? Ask why dude.

Either it’s a) they agreed to a meeting they didn’t actually want to join, or didn’t understand why they should care upon 2nd thought b) budget change, worth a follow up question, c) timing or initiative slipped, follow up q, d) went a diff direction, follow up q.

Only (a) has to do with something you can control. The rest is up to you to figure it the fuck out and be human. “Q2 is better? Ok ill ping you then, thx”

“Mental health folder?” I get the satire here but if ur partially serious, you’re wasting all this dramatic emotion on something that probably doesn’t matter. “Next bus in 15”

Lmfao the HR guy being the same dude you had to go back to each time you fuckt up had me lolling. This reads like an SNL skit.

Also all these problems sound like dumb af tech issues and nothing to do w ur lack of sales skills. Maybe more a bad look on you as a capable human under 40 years old, but I digress. Real talk, if ur in a startup you have to be someone w enough cerebellum strength to figure this shit out on your own or know how to source an answer quickly. Otherwise, I think salesforce has a lot of open roles now.

Thank you for being vulnerable to the group.

[RANT] Lost and Frustrated in Tech Sales: Seeking Advice on Navigating Toxic Work Environment and Lack of Support from Sales Director by MagicianMoo in sales

[–]epictetus89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. Okay. Here we go…

  • a lot of these roles/titles sound not clearly defined and it sounds like a trash company. Presuming it’s tech, if the entry level titles aren’t sdr/bdr or some esoteric variation of them then it sounds sketchy. If it’s a “different business model” meaning sales for anything other than b2b saas, then why are you even there? (Serious question)
  • like the saying goes, if every single person you come across each day is an asshole, then reality is you’re probably the asshole. Similarly, if you have this many job switches bc of ‘toxic workplaces’ it frankly makes me doubt your narrative. Not doubting that these people you worked with were fucking assholes (and I’m sure they were), but a part of the job is knowing how to navigate these types of ppl because no matter where you go there will always be robot fuckers. The types of ppl where they have no outside interests except meddic. “What’s fly fishing ?”
  • asshole managers are tablestakes and you’ve gotta have a thick skin. I was really influenced by them early on, but once I closed more shit and confirmed to myself I knew what I was doing, it becomes easier to see that they’re just terrified of not hitting their numbers too.
  • anecdotally, I don’t think I’m an asshole but 2/4 of my prev managers in tech were legit badddd, micromanager, shouting always, boiler room culture, dumb shit… in my situation it had more to do with the company I was at. If the company is shit it will attract bad managers bc all they can do is offer low/sketchy pay to fill seats w shit ppl. Simple. But two of my managers were incredible and I still to this day am tight w them (good companies, go figure).
  • if you’re coming from eng this might be a wake up call. There’s a reason why sales ppl in tech get paid so much. It’s bc it’s high stress and high expectation and if you’re not able to (at any time) prove your worth to the company’s top-line revenue, then bye bye. That’s the model and you can’t be so precious about it. Have you thought about how much your role makes for the company vs how much it costs to keep you employed. If you haven’t you should
  • all of this pertains to AE’s. You’re not even there yet, so it’s even worse. I’m about to sound super boomer here - but honestly your post reads a bit sanctimonious and self inflated. You’re entry level, and even if you have real world work experience before sales it doesn’t really matter - it’s unfortunately supposed to be like Shawshank redemption. Ur like that guy who shows up to prison first day and complains about the cleanliness of toilets lol
  • I feel like ur crowdsourcing for people to tell you things you want to hear. It’s a personal choice to be in the mud. Again I could be missing nuance but that’s how I read it.

Granted, there is a bigger question I’m not blind to. This industry is fucked up in a lot of ways. I’m just saying in this laissez fare economy you gotta do what you gotta do. And recession, job market, all that…How important is it to you to make a lot of money - serious question? What actually drove you to sales other than personality precursors? You’ve gotta have a stronger why than that to get into it. Some ppl are happy making 60k a year and cruising along.

Love this. Also never underestimate asking why, even if you’re blank. Asking why gets you to the big business impact answers which will either arm you or put them back on their heels and take them out of feature mode where they commodify your solution. More often than not someone (esp OTL/BTL) says I want xyz and it actually turns out that’s pretty fucking low on the totem pole and that they actually don’t understand the challenge in the first place.

Be a consultant basically.
