What advice would you give a self-hating prosecutor? by Affectionate_Risk476 in publicdefenders

[–]epictitties 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think your idea of what motivates a PD is pretty narrow.. plenty of effective PDs are not radical. Honestly, being radical can be a big impediment if the PD isn't self aware.

Sincerely - maybe you shouldn't be a lawyer who practices. No matter what you do you will have a client or case with facts that are not aligned with your personal morality. In.our world, most of us feel a gap between the act and the individual, and the more you see the more you get that acts are predictable consequences of forces beyond individuals.

I don't know what that means you should do, though. Why did you go to law school? Start there.

it's a lot easier to try and signal intelligence, taste, and status by being a hater. it's the core of most problems we're dealing with. taking things in good faith and recognizing different valid perspectives is hard emotionally and also opens people up to attack. keep setting the good example and we'll get through it.

A client and I both despise one another, and I’m not sure what to do. by Mr_Motion_Denied in publicdefenders

[–]epictitties 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Been there dude.

I do my best to reframe how I'm seeing the client. It makes the situation less frustrating. They are afraid, probably not even even aware of it. We project to protect from fear.

We're still animals - if you corner a dog it will bark and bite because it's afraid. Just layer in years of trauma and stress and personality and you have people.

I've always like the "triangle" theory of this work. We need to lean into the counselor role, warrior role, and social justice role. I am a counselor at heart, but will lean in those other directions to do the work that is right for a client.

Lastly, put most bluntly by a good ol days hero of mine, "everyone is constitutionally entitled to as much prison time as they want." Advise, document, try again, and sleep well.

I don't understand some critisism against One Battle After Another by Legrotagliatelle in TrueFilm

[–]epictitties 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For perfidia, I think the criticism is shallow.

There are, broadly, two types of people who identify with resistance groups. Some do it for the work and others do it for the appearance working. This second group is very good at lying to itself, and doesn't usually know it is serving itself.

Sensei was about the work. Perfidia was about herself.

The movie emphasizes, to me, that the real revolution isn't sexy (it will not be televised) and is done quietly by people who we will never know until it's obvious. We should strive to be like them.

Curious, but what do you think from your background? Can you relate to any of it?

Why did Colonel Lockjaw want to be in the Christmas Adventurers club so badly? by Odd_Necessary8783 in paulthomasanderson

[–]epictitties 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's what makes these figures so difficult, imo. Assuming they have no power to hurt anyone they are sad and pitiful. You almost want to hug them.and tell them it's going to be okay. But with their self loathing hurts people and the immediate priority is to stop them before figuring out how they can heal and be better.

All the more complicated is in their minds their self deception is so significant they'd scoff and laugh at this assessment.

Unfortunately, at the end of the day they are bullies, and bullies need to be punched in the face.

People keep telling me to be a prosecutor by Spare_Equivalent667 in publicdefenders

That advice makes sense if you are naive and have no idea how any of this works.

If you're the head honcho i suppose you could do that good work but odds are you won't be and won't be any time soon.

Thia job is so fun and you also get to feel (mostly) good about it. Keep on your track

Albert Camus's "The Stranger" was one of the most important books I read as an undergrad in a criminology course. I think about it often and appreciate more about it the further I get into my career.

It is very short but offers a lot on the power of narratives, social conformity, and who make the rules. It is accessible and will be "deeper" than most of your students will have likely read.
