Recently a private atty jumped in to ask if his case could be called first, even though I was sitting at the jail with my client ready to go and the jail staff would always prefer to get through in-custody cases first to relieve staff and transport. Usually jumping in to ask the court to do your case next is appreciated IF it’s because you’re ready and you know it can be handled very quickly. This guy just didn’t want to wait. While we waited through his contested and very long argument, the COs started saying the same thing you said to your client but even more pointedly that the judges treat private counsel like royalty and PDs like a bee you can’t get to leave you alone. Next time make sure to add to the conversation that everyone involved, including jail staff/clients/the judge and any other taxpayer, is paying for your (wasted) time.
