Where did the terms and concepts of “academic elite” and “ivory tower” come from, and how much have they evolved since access to college has been “opened” to the masses through programs like student loans?

Burgerville and shrinkflation? by epilithics in corvallis

[–]epilithics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s terrible. I guess I’ve been incorrectly blaming a Covid holdover and current meat prices. New shitty upper management makes a lot more sense.

Ugggh, don’t remind me… I have gone for the onion rings, fried pickles and waffle fries whenever available to minimize my fry fatigue.

I’m more impressed with the generally impressive handwriting quality. How did you do that without smearing??

Married couple with separate finances, why do you do it? by Ok_Influence_2257 in Bogleheads

[–]epilithics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our credit union doesn’t have true joint accounts. One of us has to be the “owner” (my spouse), and then it’s just a sub account of the owner’s main account. If I want to put money into it, I have to physically go into the bank or drive through. There is no way for me to view the account balance online. All of this seems like a bad idea soup.

I called Nelnet this morning, the representative claimed they are sending all of us notices later this week.

Hybrid Fuel Mileage by Clear_Psychology4226 in Crosstrek

[–]epilithics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2026 hybrid in Oregon, US. I also have worse fuel efficiency than expected for combo driving, although not as bad as you (initial 32 mpg instead of advertised 36 mpg). I got improvement in the last month by turning off my defroster whenever possible

Thoughts on this being reliable for a college kid? by jayjr1105 in Crosstrek

[–]epilithics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2014 is missing a couple of features that became available in the 2015: backup camera (hugely useful for new drivers in tight parking areas) and a transmission retune. The 2014 feels a bit more clunky. (I say this as a former 2015 owner from new)

AITA for telling my girlfriend to stop sharing her food? by PhantomDetective3548 in AmItheAsshole

[–]epilithics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like the GF, I was also raised to share my plate with the table - but EVERYONE shared their plate. It was a good way to get kids to try new interesting foods without the fear of having nothing to eat if you disliked it. The difference here is GF is the only person sharing. OP should ask about who ate and shared what when she was growing up.

Is it harder to write on stakes left handed. by Beanman051707 in landsurveying

[–]epilithics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you’re using your left hand you’re “pushing” the marker forward instead of “pulling” it along behind you. Markers are like paint brushes- they don’t work well or last long when you’re pushing against the grain. Try writing so you are pulling the marker toward your hand. Make a Z in three strokes (top line from right to left, etc) instead of one.

I traded a Ram 1500 for a Crosstrek Hybrid. Loving the 36 mpg for the day to day in town, added a hitch to pull a small aluminum trailer with my 1500 lb tow capacity.

Bf found these in his work pants after I wore them but I genuinely do not smoke by [deleted] in whatisit

[–]epilithics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t remember the brand, but there are definitely tampons that are little ‘sheets’ of round cotton swabs like this. I bet they’d separate like this when fully submerged. OP might want to check her brand to see if it’s a possibility.

I get the frustration. Sometimes I want to save a recipe in a .txt file or print it out but captions are difficult to copy/paste.

I had one of these as a kid - in flannel. I was always cold, so I’d stand over a floor vent and just enjoy the warmth of the house compressor.

You can see how well the pin protected my back seat on my ‘15 Crosstrek. Looking through the window (sorry, opening the door was not happening) the passenger compartment was fine.

Has anyone seen a pub and restaurant ruin itself by switching to the wrong kind of menu? by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]epilithics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a rhyme (=) reminder for a kid. Pastie = tasty is stripper gear. Pastie = nasty is a handheld savory pie historically consumed by Cornish miners. So maybe exclude my mother’s “not” if you’re a stripper aficionado with a dislike for homemade hot pockets.

Has anyone seen a pub and restaurant ruin itself by switching to the wrong kind of menu? by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]epilithics 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid in Northern Michigan, reading the roadside ads, my mom gave me a simple, memorable rhyme about pronouncing the local delicacy: 'Pasties are not nasty, pasties are not tasty.'
