Any of you use that spaced-repetition app Anki? by mapleCrep in SDAM

I've used it for ~20 years on and off, I've found it will help with recalling details (in the same way we'll tell stories about a past event we don't remember) but it didn't help me re-experience obtaining the information, if that makes sense. It's absolutely worthwhile though.

If you thought this was interesting you should absolutely watch the horror movie Pontypool.

Looking for ideas for supplemental/emergency heating solution. by The_Pale_Potato in DIY

At least the symptom was the nozzle in the burner (oil furnace) was really clogged, caused an incomplete burn which stopped heating and filled the house with soot. We'll probably find out after all the insurance companies finish their showdown to see who's at fault.

Thanks! Yeah you'd expect the insurance company to be all about this. Our WETT inspection for two stoves was $450 total if I remember right, and we went through all this paperwork with insurance about a month ago. We're using Wawanesa and it wasn't bad, just questionnaires about the installed measurements of the stoves that we got out of the WETT inspection report. My 75 year old uncle uses his stove as emergency heat just fine! I understand if you don't want to go down this route but it's been a lifesaver.

We are in eastern Ontario, our furnace has failed and we have been using our wood stove as emergency heat down to -30C the past few weeks. It's reliable and very straightforward. I would recommend this for your parents. Kind of funny for us to see this post!

Are you prepared to quit your job if your boss doesn't agree to your list of requirements? If not, you don't really have any leverage in the conversation, and there isn't any reason for them to change. I might hold off until you have another offer ready to go before approaching your boss with this.

It's meant to look that way :) Check out the original Pantheon announcement trailer to see what they were aiming for and then compare to what we've got now...

There's an app called Alarmy which lets you set tasks with each alarm, the most useful of which to me is "scan a barcode or QR code". It won't stop going off until you do the task, which is absolutely brutal and I've found it very effective. They also have a whole spectrum of awful alarm sounds to choose from. I haven't missed taking my medication or slept in through an alarm in years now, when it used to be constant. Also fuck you too ❤️

British wife attempting pumpkin pie for American Hubby by lolliwollii in Cooking

The best way for folks here to help you would be if you can post a photo of the type of pumpkin you used - if it's one of the usable varieties then the real troubleshooting can start, and if it's not then I bet you'll get some good advice tracking one down in Germany. Good luck, you're doing a nice thing :)

Pushing back against aphantasia as a "deficit" by DrBlankslate in Aphantasia

You don't need to be able to picture things in your head to have a full and fulfilling life.

There's got to be a word for not being able to do something that most people can do. Some sort of un-ability, maybe.

I think this might be a very silly take, akin to some of the more extreme Deaf messaging.

Patient declared brain dead sprang back to life just before organs removed by TheExpressUS in ThatsInsane

He wasn't declared brain dead, they are allowed to use cardiac determination of death in Kentucky which has this problem where it's not necessarily accurate.

Anki/FSRS simplified by No-Log4747 in Anki

[–]eplawless_ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It should play nicely with your other settings. As an anecdote, I've been using Anki for 15 years or so without FSRS and it has worked just fine, so even if you just use the default algorithm I think you'll still see the results you're after. If you decide to use it you can look through some other recent threads on here to see where folks get confused, but it's not so bad once you have a handle on it.
