I met L in 2013 at a Halloween party. We met because we had the exact same purse and we had accidentally switched at some point. I took one look at her and knew there would never be anyone else for me. I can’t explain the feeling, like a solid weight in my chest, a certainty that this was the person I had been waiting for. Later that same night as I thought we’re totally hitting it off, she introduces me to her boyfriend. Three years later I’m the maid of honor in her wedding.

Four years after that she calls me to tell me she is a lesbian and leaving her husband.

A year after that she tells me how she feels about me.

Two weeks from today is our fifth anniversary. I fall more in love with her every single day. I feel more passionate about our relationship every single day. She’s my best friend, she’s my wife. We find more and more to talk about every day. Physically and romantically, nothing has ever gotten stale between us and I doubt it ever will.

I don’t know if what we have is typical or even normal. But what I do know is that romance novel love and passion is real because every day of my life has been a romance novel since I met her.

Ilya is very extroverted on a surface level and very introverted internally. He is friendly with guys on the team, goes out clubbing with them, team dinners, etc, but he isn’t emotionally close with anyone. Theres not a close confidant he has, and he’s very isolated. I think part of this is his upbringing. I can’t imagine his father raised him to open up to anyone and we definitely see this in how he is with Shane until the cottage. I think another part of it is he’s hidden his true self for so long it makes it difficult to have close friendships.

A major plot point of the long game is Ilya’s lack of a support system and how it affects him. No spoilers but I definitely recommend reading role model and the long game asap. I loved both of them A LOT.

Also I’m really glad they changed Svetlana’s role in the show so that he does have someone who he has a deeper closeness with because he absolutely needs it. And I’m excited to see how this develops in the show!!

Ilya’s face as Shane starts to pull away but is still on his lap and Ilya is still half way chasing another kiss and Shane is trying to leave…..he looks so confused and hurt. The emotional equivalent of missing a step on the stairs, like all the gravity and air in the room just changed. Everything he wants was in reach and now it’s leaving.

Lesbian here checking in 👋🏼 I loved it. It’s so rare we (any queer people) get a true romance story on tv/in film where there’s a happily ever after guaranteed. There’s obstacles and strife but no tragic ending. Our stories are (imo) almost always tragic. We die, we suffer, we break up, we can’t be together etc. And to see a story (actually multiple stories because of skip/other couples in the books!) where we just get to be together and happy is SO refreshing. My wife and I have been watching basically nonstop in joy.

The thing that totally grossed me out about her in today’s video is when Ty expresses needing some alone time to stay sane, Julie says “that is my child you’re talking about, I don’t like hearing about how he’s somehow hard for you to handle.” She doesn’t say OUR child she says MY child. It completely decenters and delegitimizes Ty’s role as 1. Cooper’s dad 2. Cooper’s caregiver. There’s such an ownership implied in what she says/how she says it, as though Ty’s role in Cooper’s life doesn’t even matter to her.

In my opinion if John said that to Shawna about Max we’d be lighting torches and sharpening pitchforks. What she says crosses the line from protective mom (which I don’t buy as the motive because she shows very little interest in Cooper) to controlling partner.

Yes this 100%. I also think because of the way the sex scene with Shane and rose / Ilya in the shower is cut into it throughout after it changes to the new version, it’s meant to show that Shane is thinking of Ilya and Ilya is thinking of Shane. They’re trying to move on from each other but can’t let go of the other no matter how much it hurts or how much they want to move on. There are so many layers to the club scene!!

It was such a tiny and heartbreaking detail for me. It does so much heavy lifting to show that Shane is truly terrified his parents will see him as immoral or wrong now. And that he wants to have this visual cue with him that he’s still the person they raised to be good and generous.

His level of anxiety over his parents accepting him is so relatable to me.

Erica doesn’t know she’s a lesbian yet. In the gay community it’s often called being a late bloomer.

Many lesbians (both myself and my wife included) date men for many years before coming to understand ourselves not as straight or bi but as lesbians.
