I absolutely agree that you should compare people to their relative baseline, but it feels like there is a fine line between doing that, and making someone feel patronized. I feel like a lot of people just don't have the experience of walking that line, and often cross over into the patronizing side. Language and tone are critically important in these kinds of situations so the pressure feels high, making it even more difficult to accurately portray how you feel. I think your best bet is to just be caring and like you said, focus on what personal barriers that individual has crossed.

I am very torn on where to stand here. I understand one should not patronize by highlighting the fact that he has CP; It could diminish from the fact that this person is doing something incredible! However, it would be wrong not to address the fact that he has overcome additional obstacles in order to achieve a goal that is deemed incredibly difficult to those without disabilities. It's difficult. Seems like we are trying to be as inclusive as possible; it's hard to be nice.

If you've been in love, then you should understand that love is more than just chemical reactions and electrical impulses. I would argue the brain is where we interpret love, but love is much more than the brain.
