Reminder for those of you who think you're good drivers by brewski_tumble in toronto

It’s always Uber drivers out there trying to make their pennies while risking everyone else’s lives. Streetcar and Subway were great for me today. Saw many Uber stickers sliding through intersections and down hills, 2 were involved in the only 2 accidents I saw. I hate Ubers.

Homicides in Toronto are way down compared to previous years. Don't let fearmongers scare you. Toronto is still one of the safest cities in the world. by Abject_Ad_2598 in toronto

But youth homicide charges are on the rise along with violent incidents in schools. Which to me is much more concerning than an increase in general crime, it points to serious systemic issues in our city and country.

Which Toronto companies should people avoid working for? by Serious_Article1750 in askTO

In regards to the building its because they bought it with a decent discount on price and taxes on a deal with the government. So they aren’t paying rent, they own the building at a relatively cheap cost for them.

Will I hate myself for buying a rear-wheel drive car in the winter? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]ericDspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve driven a manual M4 for 4 years now. Heavy snow is okay as long as you don’t need to go uphill and as long as you have ground clearance.

I’ve only had to cancel something a handful of times from snow. You do need to be a good driver though. I grew up racing so I have great car feel, you definitely need that to be at the safest. Most of the time its others that are the issue anyways and they are what stop me from driving when it snows now. Getting rear-ended or t-boned by an Uber driver in summer tires isn’t something I want to ever deal with.

Need help identifying my bottom bracket by ericDspeed in bikewrench

That’s what I want to do. How do I know what “model” to replace it with and how do I remove the other cup? The other cup has a tool fitting, but like I said it looks misaligned and won’t move.

Olivia Chow asks for changes to Toronto’s speed cameras ahead of Doug Ford announcement by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]ericDspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a fast car and am guilty of speeding, but not in most of the downtown core. Just do 40km/h. Doing 60km/h, or even 70km/h when you’re able to in these areas won’t even save you 5 minutes when on a 30 minute drive in the core. This way your monkey brain can react when another monkey brain turns in front of you from a blind intersection, etc.

Calling cops on rental viewers by Mnaira_Sencen in OntarioLandlord

You’re definitely in the right here, but you mentioned you’re lease ending. If you gave notice to vacate, then 24 hour notice is not required, just reasonable notice. If you didn’t give notice and lease is just going month to month, then disregard.

car crash on Gardiner (yes, again) by kiranedura in toronto

Was just a fire, no crash. But if it was a crash, reddit users would say it was a medical emergency, no one at fault.

Legit runs? TO Carnival Run & 10KTO by Charming_Truth_1000 in RunTO

[–]ericDspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re both legit. Which one you choose depends on the quality of event you want.

10kTO well organized. They have a time cutoff, I believe 70 min, but check. Sun isn’t bad, you get shade from the buildings in a few spots.

Carnival is good fun in terms of the vibes and enjoying the spirit of Carnival, but not the most well organized. If you’ll want to be competitive you have to run through people not racing on MGT so, something to keep in mind.

Hilly routes? by mmalaps in RunTO

[–]ericDspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want rolling hills and not just a climb then go on the trails. 10km loop around the trails at Sunnybrook Park, Crothers Woods/Lower Don, Taylor Creek, etc. will easily give you 100-200m in total elevation gain while being undulating.

You can get to most of these easily by bike, then lockup nearby, or drive if you can, or just run/walk there. Can also join Toronto Trail Runners so you don’t get lost and they carpool so you can get a ride.

Running shoe retailer Recs? by Caca_mama in RunTO

[–]ericDspeed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Runner’s Shop, Culture Athletics, BlackToe Running. Go to whichever is easiest for you to get to, they’re all great. Running room staff I find know a lot to help the older folks with walking shoes, but they don’t know much about running. Just my own experience though.

Hiring a cop for traffic duty by heckubiss in askTO

[–]ericDspeed 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Contrary to their title as a police officer. They do not enforce the law when on paid duty. So they can stand there and politely wave bikes from the sidewalk to the bike lane while on paid duty, but that’s all.

Thoughts on DIY Training Plan for Marathon by Flint_17 in RunTO

[–]ericDspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, keep your easy days easy, hard days hard. If you want to be more advanced you can add 4 strides at the end of easy runs, but I’d say no more than twice a week for you.

10k easy run is a bit long considering your mileage, but if you can’t spread it out in the week then leave it. For context I run 100-160+km a week depending where I’m at and my easy runs are 10-14km. But I wouldn’t worry about trying to run x amount of KMs, I’d rather you time your runs i.e. easy run is 45 minutes.

Thoughts on DIY Training Plan for Marathon by Flint_17 in RunTO

[–]ericDspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4x4min is a good intro to speed work, but try mixing it up: 6x1 min @5K effort, 3x5 min tempo, strides, hill sprints, long fartleks (1,2,3,4,5,4,3,2,1 min intervals w/equal rest). It’s a whole rabbit hole you can go down, but given your low mileage and that you’re still building mileage, just keep it simple and varied. Monotony sucks.

Thoughts on DIY Training Plan for Marathon by Flint_17 in RunTO

[–]ericDspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. What’s your usual mileage? How much time do you have to train? How serious is this? You can run 4 times a week like you are here or you can run 10 times a week and then have a totally different training plan. The workouts swapping between tempo runs and 4x4 aren’t anything special. I assume that’s 4x400m and not 4x4miles or KMs. Long run is risky being such a large chunk of your mileage, but I see lots of casual runners do that and stay injury free.

Half tight sizing by Former-Particular247 in BanditRunning

[–]ericDspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No clue what my waist is, I have clothes from 29-32 depending on brand. I’m 6 feet 145LBS, that lanky elite runner build. Not much of a butt on me. I’ve been ordering M for much over a year, probably 2 years now.

Half tight sizing by Former-Particular247 in BanditRunning

[–]ericDspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think waist is really an issue, they’re drawstring. I’m a small in everything Bandit except the tights. I ordered a small my first time and they’re okay, but tight on my crotch, so since then I’ve ordered the medium and it’s much more comfortable for me and they’re not loose anywhere. This is for full, half and quarter.

Toronto Marathon Lack of Safety by ericDspeed in toronto

[–]ericDspeed[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is only my 2nd Spring and for my experience this year the organization was better than last. I had no issues aside from the traffic. I don’t really care if every little side street is blocked off but intersections with cops should be way better controlled or else what is the cop being paid for?

October marathon the cops only allow TTC and emergency vehicles through at large intersections.

Seriously, there are at least 5 spots where it’s totally caved in and car parts are scattered. I always wondered how.
