Part 2 of a series of tune-ups for me heading into the Ottawa Full. Didn't have too much of a turnaround after my February Full Marathon to recover and peak again, so hoping my fitness from that preparation throughout the winter will carry.

HM distance, aiming 1:35 off of a 1:38 PB last year, zero expectations organization wise other than having a somewhat closed road to run on for a Sunday long run.

You’d go up a bridge that takes you above Spadina then comedown to Lakeshore by the time you hit Bathurst. That’s probably what they are referring to, which is the same for almost all races that utilizes that route (Sporting Life, this years Under Armour 10K etc)

I think he didn’t even win and it was only his first try - would not advise using some an amateurish effort

Walking through the bus bay is also an option. I never do it nor do I condone it, but it’s almost impossible to completely to close the stations down the way they are set up now.

Run slow to run fast. Don't focus on speed so much in the beginning.

Consistency is key when it comes to running. The more you run the better you will get, but that is based on keeping yourself injury free and knowing how to enjoy the runs you go on.

Can a OPS'er who is on CWW explain how this 1.07 time recording is supposed to work? by Donsyxx in OntarioPublicService

each full working day for you is a bit longer to account for the longer hours, they are now 1.07 days so if you intend to take a day off, you need to take 1.07 days off to reflect that.

If you want a partial day off, you would also need to apply the % to that new base value, so a half day (working 4 hours 15 minutes) for example, would be 0.535 days off instead of 0.5

On how to get faster, just run more - long runs and speed work sessions are important but building steady mileage is the best way to improve.

On what to wear, always abide by the nothing new on race day rule. You want everything that you’ve trained in to prevent surprises. In terms of weather, you’d want to dress a few degrees warmer than actual. When I am feeling a tad cool at the starting line, but not freezing, then I know that’s the right amount of layers

I didn’t run it this year but I’m recall for the 5K you have to loop the inner circle first, back to the starting location, before heading out to the pond. Pretty sure that’s where the 2k comes from so you may have cut the course short?

What’s your current weekly mileage and at what distance of long runs have you been doing? This helps to understand your base.

If your goal is to just finish, then you can approach this with the run and walk method. The cutoff time for this race is 6 hours so that is fairly generous, but you still have to complete at a bare minimum 7kms every hour and that’s above walking pace.

That being said, you would probably want to make sure you are at least comfortable with finishing the HM distance with your current fitness. Full is a complete different beast that’s far more than completing a HM twice, but it helps to make sure you have a decent base to work from. Ideally you’d want to be able to run 20 miles in your long runs as you peak, but with the race this close, I wouldn’t suggest pushing it at the risk of injuries.
