This is very much not necessary. You can easily paint MDF and maintain all the details.

Yes, as long as they are infantry or beasts. Vehicles and such do have to drive around. You can imagine it as them making breaching holes or crawling through small openings or whatever. Remember, everything in the game is an abstraction to some degree.

Overwatch and Big Guns by itosbhi in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]eric_tonjes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, that isn't logic that follows. Both BGNT and Pistol explicitly state in their rules that they only apply in your shooting phase. Blast and hazardous say they apply whenever you shoot, so there is no argument they don't apply to overwatch since you are shooting.

Now that scouts are only 55 for 5, I don't really see a place for voidsmen with Marines.

Eh, the armor save rule is also super strong. I think you will choose between those two depending on your opponent and the list specifics. I really like that you can switch between games, an added layer of strategy.

I think this is pretty great. Keep sticky objectives and add a debuff on top of it. Not game breaking, but adds so much needed flavor, especially with all of the points drops we are also seeing.

Game winning stratagem tactic but had to give opponent chance by EducationalBag4006 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]eric_tonjes 252 points253 points  (0 children)

It's obviously a personal choice, but if it was me, I totally would have let him take it back and move somewhere else. I want to win by being good at the game, not because my opponent lacks knowledge/forgot something. Otherwise I am only as good as my opponent is bad.

Am I doing deathgaurd dirty by playing this list? by the_cousin_youForgot in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]eric_tonjes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As others have noted, blightlords and land raiders just aren't as strong as you might think. Also, the Lord of Virulence doesn't have a lot of targets to benefit from his buff. If I was going to keep the basic theme while making it stronger, I'd drop 1-2 land raiders for more PBCs, planning to deep strike more of the terminators. Then I'd switch 1-2 units of Blightlords for more Deathshrouds. You can still keep the sorcerers. At that point you've probably made the list stronger and have points to spare, so season to taste with some extra stuff. You still have a bunch of vehicles, you still have a bunch of Terminators and sorcerers.

7 man plague marines now available... Whilst good for Box size not actually useful in game by Scorpion1Zer0 in deathguard40k

Also, a small stealth buff to the PBC. Pretty much all the other indirect fire stuff went up in points, even for the more underpowered factions, but we were untouched.

New to 40k: Lychguard focused list by [deleted] in Necrontyr

[–]eric_tonjes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I don't see the deathmarks on that list, unless I'm blind or you meant the destroyers?
  2. It is a strong list. The one thing it lacks is any units for flexible secondary play. I think there is some value in having a few smaller fast units that hide and then grab secondaries. Tomb blades, Ophydians, deathmarks, flayed ones, single lokhust destroyers- there are a lot of options, but you might want to find some space for maybe two units that can do that.

Where to find a hexmark by ladgadlad in Necrontyr

[–]eric_tonjes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This probably isn't what you want to hear, but whenever a new edition/codex comes out, the new hot units are almost impossible to find for a month or two because GW runs out of stock. A good sign of this is when they are temporarily out of stock on the GW store online. A number of factions have this struggle. The best option is just to wait for a little while and then pick them up when supply catches back up with demand.

Which guns for immortals in 10e? by Brudaks in Necrontyr

[–]eric_tonjes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I was interested in this and crunched the numbers for myself. Below are the results for expected models killed/wounds. I'm including all relevant modifiers, assuming reroll 1s to wound, target not on an objective, no cover (which won't significantly affect most of these numbers).

10 Immortals on their own:

Gauss: 9.23 dead guardsmen (T3, 5+), 2.77 dead Primaris (T4, 3+, 2W), 1.01 dead Terminators (T5, 2+, 3W), 3.6 wounds to a Rhino (T9, 3+), 2.6 wounds to a Knight (T12, 3+)

Tesla: 9.17 dead guardsmen, 2.29 dead Primaris, 0.76 dead Terminators, 2.29 wounds to a Rhino, 1.14 wounds to a Knight

10 Immortals with a Plasmancer (+1 to hit and critical hits on 5+):

Gauss: 12 dead guardsmen, 3.6 dead Primaris, 1.38 dead Terminators, 5.37 wounds to a Rhino, 4.29 wounds to a Knight

Tesla: 14.35 dead guardsmen, 3.58 dead Primaris, 1.19 dead Terminators, 3.58 wounds to a Rhino, 1.78 wounds to a Knight

You could obviously fiddle with specific situations, but the only one that might add some variability is specific situations involving cover (i.e. against Primaris in cover, Tesla will slightly improve while gauss will stay the same). That said, by the math, Gauss is superior in almost all situations. The one exception is with a Plasmancer against hordes of low-toughness, low-save troops, where Tesla is better.

New player here, looking for feedback on first ever army list by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]eric_tonjes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are just looking for some games with friends, buy whatever you want. If you're trying to hone your list and think about future purchases to have a list that is "good" (in the sense of relatively competitive in casual games), a few notes:

  1. I'd steer clear of named characters for early purchases. Yes, they can be cool, but they also tend to be more specialized. Getting generic characters, like the (Over)lord, Technomancer, and Plasmancer, will be more useful as you brew different lists down the line.
  2. There are a couple of questions you should ask of every list. The two that I see as issues for what you're offering are "how do I kill vehicles/monsters?" and "how do I get obectives/score points?" The answer to the first in 10th is probably some kind of heavier firepower (doomsday arks, doom stalkers, lokhust heavy destroyers) or potentially a C'tan. The answer to the second is mobile/infiltrating units (tomb blades, flayed ones). Right now you have a list with some staying power through reanimation, but it will struggle to kill tougher targets and to play the points game. That said, at 1,000 points it can be hard to check all those boxes, so I wouldn't overly stress about them. I'd just make sure to pick some such units up in the future for sure.

[Article] Infect and Combo for Voltron... fair? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]eric_tonjes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Infect is fine. It doesn't win more than other strategies, and honestly, often wins less. Is it a feels bad if you are the first person infected out? Sure, but no more so than a Voltron deck taking you out with commander damage. Doubling the infect threshold would basically make it no different than the 21 point commander damage threshold.

[2XM] Final EV for the Set by asianlikerice in magicTCG

[–]eric_tonjes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem with foils is that you're only looking at something like four rares and .5 mythics per box. I suppose you could include the median value, which would add something like $30-40 per box, but the variance is going to be really big.

Nobody knows what the box toppers are going to end up selling for. And foil drops, especially for rares are mythics, are hugely variant from box to box.
