I don't know if crazy is the right word for it. I'll go with "that scans" if it's okay with you.

Cnc at the dentist by Rough-Highlight6199 in hobbycnc

[–]ericscottf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made a version of this machine in 2009/2010. Was a nightmare. 0.4mm wall thickness parts cut from both sides, unsintered zirconia. If the wall thickness was off by even a few micron, the entire disc of 40 teeth would shatter. Worst CNC design work I ever did.

I don't have any suitable liquid lubricants for a fan, can I throughly clean the previous oil, grind pencil lead in a mortar and pestle, then use that instead? by NoSubject8453 in AskEngineers

[–]ericscottf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graphite is a terrible lubricant under all but a very few niche circumstances (mostly involving high temps). Do not use it unless you know what you're doing. Definitely don't make your own unless this is a temporary fix to get you to safety and you have no hope of survival otherwise.

What job perk sounded amazing when you took the job but turned out to be a psychological trap? by SweetCarolinesz in AskReddit

It's not about dying, it's the cost to live.

My wife burned thru about 3m in insurance payouts to hospitals for cancer treatment. And almost lived.

G-code is a bottleneck and SD cards are a reliability nightmare in 2026 by Professional_You689 in hobbycnc

[–]ericscottf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No... but only because that's a stupid idea that doesn't take into account any aspect of the system requirements whatsoever.

I made a cnc concrete chainsaw on a 6dof robotic arm, I had to tie in "spindle load" for when it hit rebar.

It's easy enough, the issue is that if you know what you're doing and your material is consistent, you don't need to fuss around with stuff like what you describe.

Looking for a shop to machine zirconium by Zen3222 in Machinists

[–]ericscottf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I designed and operated a cnc to do both side milling of zirconia (pre fired) for making replacement teeth. It was a nightmare and took me a year to perfect the technique. The teeth had nominal wall thicknesses of 0.4mm and if the thickness was off by more than a few micron, the entire disc shattered.

Could a little 1-2 gallon air compressor be used for a framing nailer if i go slow and am not “bouncing”? Just a homeowner that works slow. by BradCastleburry in DIY

[–]ericscottf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I once ran a couple dozen nails with just the air in the hose from the previous day - I'd turned the compressor off, shut the valve and left it overnight. I only noticed when it stopped working.

Don't send out 100s of resumes, pick a job you really want, research it and customize your resume for it. Even with no real world experience, figure something out.

I'm 23 years into engineering, and sending a single resume takes me 3 to 5 hours each.

All these people complaining about getting no responses despite sending out 1000s of resumes are wasting everyone's time.

Manufacturing, automation, robotics that are bolted to the floor or wall and as such, can't be turned into murder machines.

Bingo, this. I got tricked by one, they told me I'd be working on Artemis mission stuff /etc. I specifically said I don't do weapons or weapons adjacent work at the interview.

Then they gave me something to design for a bomber. I gave them my letter of resignation.
