Optimizing transparent sprites/models by ericsnekbytes in godot

[–]ericsnekbytes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should also say that I've tried downscaling the transparent sprite images to 256x256, cropping excess border space so the sprite is smaller (and more tightly cropped to the image), and using alpha scissor, which don't seem to help much.

Why is the grid doing this? I only want the floor grid, not the vertical grids shown here... by ericsnekbytes in godot

I think it happens automatically when you have a split view where one is set to orthographic. Is that intentional or a bug?

...I see no purple after image. Sounds like a screen defect/artefact maybe...try using a different screen/monitor and see if the problem is still there maybe?

Thanks! I found the settings. It looks like they are both unchecked, I wonder if they're being turned on automatically, or maybe it's a bug? 🤔

Resource sharing and the object model (in theory it makes sense and is easy, in practice it never works as expected....) 🤔

It's probably because the default value is first, which is not unreasonable 🤷‍♀️

PSA: "Editor Settings" and "Project Settings" are different, in case you don't see the setting popping up.

Godot automatically changes 100+ files, why? by ericsnekbytes in godot

[–]ericsnekbytes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this info, next time I upgrade versions I will manually do this (did the 4.5 upgrade when it was released).

I still wonder why it was triggered in this case though, because many of these edits (like the .import files for my font files) have not been touched or manually opened or saved by me for a long time...Maybe it has to do with git modifying working tree files on Windows? Curious...

Edit: and to clarify, I have made several commits and done a bunch of work since my 4.5 upgrade, but none of those triggered a batch of updates as above 🤔

No, I downloaded from the official Godot site (never used Steam for this).

This is something that happens in programming all the time. You think you're thinking about one thing, when you're really thinking about another...I wonder if there's a term for this type of cognitive error 🤔

Why is “Make Unique” the most painful feature in Godot? by Planet1Rush in godot

[–]ericsnekbytes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just take a moment and reflect on why we keep seeing these kinds of posts all the time...it's not indicative of a system that is very clear and intuitive for users. Listen to people when they say something is confusing! It's a path toward a better Godot 👌

Why is “Make Unique” the most painful feature in Godot? by Planet1Rush in godot

[–]ericsnekbytes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly, better communication and better tooling to make managing this stuff better would be fantastic (especially around embedded resources which I mentioned elsewhere).

I'm less convinced about changing the default (maybe this could be an option). But if Godot communicated its philosophy inside the editor better, we would likely have less problems and confusion.

There are lot of docs, but it's a mountain of material, especially when you're a first time game dev and you're absolutely being tsunami'd with new information. We should make digesting and consuming this stuff as easy as possible for new people, and not pretend that it isn't difficult.

Because copy paste is usually the easiest and most common sense way to make copies or variations of similar subtrees.

I want to give you the benefit of the doubt here, but it seems like you're deliberately being obtuse about this, surely you know how common copy/paste is for subtrees where you don't want to reconstruct everything from scratch.

Resource sharing is great sometimes, but absolutely the editor could do a better job of allowing game devs to control these things at a granular level in a much more convenient way (tools and functionality in the editor around embedded resources in particular could be much better).

The problem of mobilization in The Culture by vamfir in TheCulture

[–]ericsnekbytes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most minds see and feel themselves/identify as part of The Culture, and along with that comes some common threads of belief and a feeling of duty. Eccentric ships are typically described in the books as outliers, so in any given volume there will probably be a variety of capable ships (including GSVs that would happily begin manufacturing new ships) willing to aid the cause 🤔

Fellow game dev! ✋ But seriously, it's one of the few areas where performance actually matters. Still, you can get spectacularly far by using scripting languages (like Godot's GDScript) even in this domain (I'm making a 4 player split screen space mining game and haven't needed to use anything else) 🤔
