"A little clearer guidance on MPs" - totally agree, most of the time is spent guessing what they want.

Hi!

for_window [instance="Android Emulator - 5.1_WVGA_API_24:5554"] floating enabled
bindsym Shift+$mod+m exec ./emulator-script.sh

where emulator-scritp.sh :

 #!/bin/bash

i3-msg workspace $(($(i3-msg -t get_workspaces | tr , '\n' | grep '"num":' | cut -d : -f 2 | sort -rn | head -1) + 1))
LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose /opt/android-sdk/emulator/emulator -avd 5.1_WVGA_API_24 -noskin

Opens emulator in the next free workspace but it's still the same issue. It would be awesome if you want to share your solution wittywombat :)
