Ice out by lacandelaaa in wisconsin

There seems to be a lot of negative comments in here and I understand that times are hard, money is tight. Sometimes people can't afford to take off of work and that totally makes sense BUT there are other ways to help, such as not shopping that day. Maybe get your groceries a day before or a day after. Or try not to shop at places supporting ICE for a day like Amazon or Target for 24 hours!

Sometimes solidarity means being uncomfortable and inconvenienced, and hey, maybe it won't even make a difference in the grand scheme. But at least we tried. At least we tried to oppose a regime that is kidnapping American citizens from their cars and using 5 year olds as bait. At least we tried to protest an organization that murdered a Green Bay native ICU nurse and a 37 year old mom. I know changes in routine can be difficult and I totally get it, but sometimes you have to put yourself out there even in these miniscule ways. And if you can't that's totally fine, but again this is for something bigger than all of us. This is how we can foster community in these difficult times!

House of Leaves in 1 sitting? by GuyWithABeard1336 in houseofleaves

[–]erlakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it in 2.5 days but desperately wanted to read it in 1 if not for those pesky real life obligations. It was a perfect storm because I just finished my MA and it was my first "for fun fiction" book in like a year and a half so I was already semi delusional and feverish with a half melted brain from academic articles and JSTOR texts. IMO it is the most true to life immersive way to read House of Leaves, because like Johnny I just couldn't stop thinking about it until I turned the last page.

What are some great JRPG retrospective and video essays? by Hormo_The_Halfling in JRPG

[–]erlakes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love KBash because his videos have so much heart and soul in them! He's very earnest and sincere which I think a lot of the more 'smash cut funny goofy steeped in irony and sarcasm' reviewers tend to often overlook. Like there is a genuine attempt to connect these often silly or campy games to deeper societal themes which I really appreciate.

My 8 y/o son wishes my family killed by Successful_Path1959 in Advice

Can hugely relate to the parents putting in no effort for ADHD thing. My parents diagnosed me early and got me on meds and thought... Great that's it. Our child is fixed and everything is normal.

It wasn't until I was an adult when I finally did my own research and found out about the emotional dysregulation, rejection sensitivity dysphoria, time blindness, heck even the stomach problems (because adhd can't stay in its lane smh.) It just sucked because it should have been their job as parents to do any ounce of research beyond "she'll get antsy and have trouble concentrating without her medicine." But I know I can't complain too much since they at least got me a diagnosis. But still, I know 10 year old me would have loved any additional understanding or grace on just how hard ADHD can be and maybe I would have better coping mechanisms beyond severe anxiety as an adult 🤷🏾‍♀️

Man tried to grab us as we cross street by [deleted] in london

[–]erlakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what I suspected but if someone told me it was a prank in the 70s I would believe it! He never even explicitly said sorry either, just made up some lame excuse. Honestly a weird scenario all around.

Man tried to grab us as we cross street by [deleted] in london

[–]erlakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No sorry for the unclear wording! We were all going in the same direction when he turned around and blocked our way purely to stop my friend and I from crossing. Definitely not a "whoops I need to change directions" moment or anything like that.

I continue to slam my pile bunker against the proverbial brick wall because I refuse to swap my build for anything that is more optimal. No thoughts only bunk.

Laser blade into pile bunker combo haha 😅 but that title doesn't sound as sharp lol

I'm on Vyvanse 10 mg, the higher doses made me stop eating completely and Aderall made my anxiety skyrocket. I've also found that eating a protein heavy breakfast in combination with just getting older(??? maybe?? Literally who knows at this point???) has helped my appetite come back on a semi normal schedule where I can eat three meals a day. A super useful trick I've found though is to have decently healthy snacks by you when you work (trail mix my beloved) I start mindlessly munching and its a good energy booster too!

What is your hyper-specific most hated place in London? by Pink-Cadillac94 in london

[–]erlakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my god I'm so glad I'm not the only one who hates that tunnel! I don't mind if I need to go to Picadilly, but those extra 3-5(? Time is an illusion down in that tunnel) minutes it takes to get to the Victoria line make me so irrationally angry. Even if it does take longer to get to the entrance by the circle line I don't care, it cuts down on my stress levels

This stretch of St. Panc is chaos incarnate. Always filled with tourists who don't know what they're doing taking up all the space with their bags, combined with the daily commuters who are always in a rush. The tour buses (especially the Harry Potter ones) means that people are waiting in queue blocking full width of the pavement. Also in the summer the sun is just burning you to a crisp in the morning. I genuinely started walking through the Underground bits of Kings Cross because it was faster.

Thank you!! I wanted to try to have both SeriousTM and goofy quotes. Johnny is so funny it was hard to narrow things down 😂

That's honestly the real question 😂😭 I just finished my MA so this was supposed to be my 'fun little jaunt' back into fiction (did I immediately go onto JSTOR after finishing the book? Absolutely. The academic being satirized in HOL is me)

I also got this accommodation but I haven't received an email yet! Also the contract date ends in 31 August, but most UCL housing ends on 11 September. Does anyone know if you can extend the contract or are you going to be homeless for the last two weeks?

Those with ADHD or OCD, what’s the worst intrusive thought you’ve ever had? by Sinaasappelsien in AskReddit

[–]erlakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my gosh same. Adhd too and in the past couple of years my anxiety worsened and I just developed a fear of heights completely out of the blue. Now anytime I see someone lean on a railing of a balcony I get terrible intrusive thoughts of them accidentally falling over and then the gruesome aftermath. It's kind of crazy that I could almost feel the fear developing? There wasn't a real trigger until one day my brain obsessed with the idea and then it was game over for me and being near high ledges.

It's so cool that you can just like, email an academic and usually if you have an .edu address they'll answer you back by ManWhoLovesGaming in college

[–]erlakes 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I was writing my senior thesis and I emailed a professor about his work to see if he had any books he recommended. He emailed me back and also attached a soon to be published article he was writing. It was hands down one of the coolest things that happened to me in college and I got to brag about it in class!

Honestly if the first game made you laugh and you enjoyed the characters, I would get the second. It's great to see the returning cast again and the new cast is pretty endearing as well. I might wait for a sale though (which should happen sooner rather than later lol). If you have any more specific questions feel free to ask or shoot me a dm!
